  2. CueCat.... on Set Digital Music Free · · Score: 1

So if CueCat did this, they wouldn't have to give out any money because everyone and they dog figured out how to break it, right? Has anyone tried XOR SDMI?

  3. The test files.... on Set Digital Music Free · · Score: 2

OK, you may be boycotting them, but according to hacksdmi's website, some of the test files are 50 MB. So even if you are boycotting, go ahead and download the files, there's nothing like a good ol' slashdotting'. Besides, it'll make them think that people are interested.

Ever use big words and proper grammar with someone who's arguing with you? They say something like "Screw you asshole!" And you reply with "Thank you. I'll be sure to take that into consideration. However, since there's an implied 'You' in your request, the direct object should really be 'yourself'. So I'd suggest that you perform an act of copulation upon yourself, a being of questionable paternity."

Then you usually try to get away before they decide to kick your ass.

  6. My Channel One experience..... on Campus Pipeline: Schools Selling Students' Eyes · · Score: 1

I had Ch1 during my study hall in the library.

I found that in the time it took to watch Channel 1, I could ready USA today, newspapers from a larger city, and a magazine. The magazine would be rotated depending what's new (newspaper was new everyday). The magazine consisted of US News & World Review, Newsweek, Time, Popular Science.

One day the librarian came up to me and told me that I needed to be watching Channel 1. I looked up and said, "If you can honestly tell me that I get more information out of channel one than I do now, I will." She then agreed that I could only get up to switch newspapers during the commercial breaks :)

  7. Problem with water towers on Company Uses Grain Elevators for Internet Access · · Score: 1

The ISP I worked for was going to use the water tower to get coverage for the east side of town, but a problem was our water tower looks kind of like a hamburger bun on a pole, and the curve of it would interfere with people who lived really close to the tower.

  8. They're not the first ISP to do it..... on Company Uses Grain Elevators for Internet Access · · Score: 1

An ISP in ND has been doing this for a while now. It works pretty well. Tall trees can be a problem though. A problem we have though is customers say that it costs too much, but the prices seem comparable to DSL in bigger cities. They just want to wait until it's around $30 a month though.

  10. I had this problem.... on Coding Classes & Required Development Environments? · · Score: 1

I had this problem last semester. For a File Processing class, we wrote a b-tree using C++. We got some foundation code from the book and had groups add on to it. The foundation code wouldn't compile under Solaris, so we all compiled for Linux machines. Then you tell the TA where to compile it. We told him to compile under Frick/Frack, which are RedHat. He ended up e-mailing me and telling me the code kept crashing. I recompiled and it worked fine. He had actually compiled on a different RedHat machine and the code would core dump on startup, before even reading any files....

  12. Man I wish you weren't lying...... on Open-Source Netware-Aware OS Under Construction · · Score: 2

I could actually use something like this. Can't upgrade the clients past Win 3.11 because the software will only function under Win 3.11 with low-end hardware. Inherited the project with no documentation. And if there's any downtime on one machine, we lose three others. It's a spaghetti setup :)

If there was an open-source LanMan replacement, we could probably streamline the updating of the macines.

  13. Convince your ISP to go wireless on Broadband In Rural Areas? · · Score: 1

The ISP I used to work for started offering wireless. It works pretty good in our small (13,000) town. The reason we chose wireless is because we didn't want to wait for US West or the cable company. They always said they were upgrading, but it always seemed like a pipe dream. Customers say it's great. All they have on their roof is a small antenna that's the circumference of a pop can and about a foot tall. The cards are either PCI or pcmcia, but I don't know if there's linux drivers. You could also get a bridge and hook up using Ethernet to linux. The cost is about $50 or so a month depending on what you want for speed.

  14. Maniac Mansion.... on What Does The Future Hold For 3D Myst-ery Games? · · Score: 1

This is what I had on my machine last year:

Bill: Hello, you have reached Bill and Bryan's room. We are
Bryan: Hello?!?! .....this is still the answering machine. Please leave a message.

It confused quite a few people. However, one time, I came home right during my part on the machine and picked up "Yes, this is really me now. Seriously. Hello?" but they hung up by then.

Looks like NSI couldn't be a registrar if they weren't already. Of course II.D.2.i has some language that is confusing to me that might allow them to.

  21. Parrots just need a Palm on The Internet For Parrots · · Score: 2

They don't need tons of memory or anything. They can write graffiti using their beak. I'm not a bird expert, so I'm not sure whether a color screen would even be beneficial to them. All parrots need is a Palm Pilot. Of course, they could also get some voice recognition too. Why do people always insist on reinventing the wheel whenever a new species decides to go on the internet.

And now we'll have to look forward to all those messages (ICQ, e-mail, etc) "helo, my name is polly and im a parrot. lets be penpals. write back to me. also, want to play diablo 2? i will kick your ass". Those are going to start getting annoying.

  22. What's with the two gaps? on One-Finger Keyboarding? · · Score: 1

What with the big gaps in the middle row? I'd like to see the side moved to eliminate those. Otherwise, you'll see a nice Windows logo there in a few years. 23. There's initial speed and current speed on ITU Agrees On V.92 standard · · Score: 1

I work for an ISP. People complain alot that they're 56K modem is only connecting at 49.2 (or some really good number). Anyways, we can check our Total Control box and see what they connect at and what their current connection is. There's an initial connection speed and a current connection speed. Windows only displays the initial connection speed, even though it may vary during the course of the connection. The people getting a 49.2 initial end up having a 52 kbps eventually and they still complain. It's pretty good considering the telco here isn't the greatest.

  24. This might have some ramifications..... on Yahoo Will Use Google Instead Of Inktomi · · Score: 2

I notice a pattern of people and search engines. Those that use hotmail as their e-mail use yahoo as their search engine. Those who use POP3 use altavista or google. I had a public speaking teacher that wanted us to visit a website. She was too dumb to give us the address, so she said, "Go to a search engine and type in blah blah blah....." I couldn't find it using AV or google. But when I typed it into Yahoo, it was in the first page.

The point of this is that some people are too dumb to write down URL's. They depend on search engines to find a site again. If they site changes, people might become confused.

  25. A different way to detect..... on Software That Can Censor 'Sexual Images.' Or Not. · · Score: 2

I saw software similar to this a while ago (sorry, can't remember the name or anything), but what they did to detect was to look for a large "blobs" of a skin tone (white, black, tan, etc.) and then did some computations to determine what it was. They could "detect" a torso with legs and arms coming out even if they were crossed. So if someone had a bikini on, the blob wouldn't be continuous, and therefore not something naked. So if you add this algorithm with the other it might be pretty good.

Disclaimer: This information might be wrong, it was a while ago that I saw it.
