Typical Slashdot Microsoft bashing. Isn't it the cable companies, or whoever they had design the cards, who came up with the pairing thing? Complain about them, not Microsoft.
The article does say they refused to give him a refund. But then it goes on to say he was given a replacement. I'm a bit confused. Was that before or after he files suit?
Other companies do that as well. There were unskippable commercials on the Shrek 2 DVD. Someone should compile a list of such movies, so we know to pirate them instead of buying them.;)
As the download link now gives a 404 error, I can't test it out. Can you use it to play embedded MP3 and WAV files in FireFox? Is there any to to have it play Quicktime movies? I can't stand Quicktime and I can't stand its Firefox plugin. It makes MP3 files I want to download appear embedded instead and I believe it has problems with some MP3 files.
I have QuickTimeAlternative installed, so I should be able to play Quicktime files in WMP. As least I can play them fullscreen that way, unlike with Quicktime.
I agree. Seriously, what's with this Slashdot post and the linked article? And why aren't other people asking where the hell it is? And why isn't someone providing a link?
I agree, switching to gmail for university email doesn't sound that bad. Especially if it would raise the storage limit from 20 MB to >2GB. I don't really care though, I almost never use my university email as I have all of my class email sent to my Yahoo/SBC account.
CompUSA is a national store, while Fry's is not. By closing half of their stores, CompUSA is becoming more like Fry's, although they'll still have more than double the number of stores.
See's Candies made a mistake on their website a while back as well, where they had a pound of chocolate listed for free. Plus, there was no shipping and no need to enter your credit card during checkout. I admit, I ordered one. Of course, as expected, they didn't ship the chocolate. But they did send everyone a coupon for a free pound of chocolate and an apology letter. Although I haven't used the coupon because the nearest store is >100 miles away, and I don't want to pay $14 in shipping.
Of course, all this is different than Amazon's mistake. They should've caught it before sending out the items. And in your case, they canceled your order instead of just charging your credit card more.
Microsoft seems to able to do it just fine. Plus, the RIAA doesn't seem to care (or maybe they don't know) that some music download services are still using crackable DRM. And I was under the impression that myfairtunes still worked. Also, I am under the impression that all music sold on the iTunes store is required to have DRM. I'm sure some artists want to sell their without DRM on iTunes.
Plus, Google lets you download the original file (DivX/MPEG/whatever). I really hope they don't get rid of this. Google Video was a better video uploading site, it's just that YouTube is more popular and has more content.
"The company plans to offer Windows and Office for sale on the Web using technology called digital locker, which can safely store the alphanumeric license "keys" that provide customers with rights to use its products, and resume interrupted downloads."
Sounds to me like they'll just give you a normal product key to print out.
Through MSDN. You download the ISO and they give you a product key. Will the new download service work the same way? The bigger news is that Microsoft is also selling Office this way. I know I can't download Word/PowerPoint/Excel through MSDNAA, and I also believe that you can't download it from regular MSDN.
And yet none of them are actually valid. It could very well be OSX at the core. Just because a particular Linux device doesn't have an X server doesn't mean it's not running Linux "in any meaningful sense".
I see a few problems with that. First, it obviously isn't going to replace the two-way radio and beeper if the cellphones they have now don't. Second, a lot of the stuff you said could make their jobs easier could be done with cheaper phones that are already out. The iPhone also supposedly doesn't have a GPS (I'd think it would have at least the AGPS that most cheap cellphones have though). Finally, and most importantly, the iPhone doesn't look rugged at all. Considering what police officers do, I think giving them iPhones would result in many iPhones being destroyed.
From Engadget: "9:51am - It [running OSX] let us create desktop class applications and networking, not the cripled stuff you find on most phones, these are real desktop applications."
Kind of contradictory. Perhaps it runs the same kernel with a scaled down / modified GUI?
That has got to be one of the weirdest pages ever. It only worked in the first browser/OS combo I tried, Firefox 2.0.0.1 on Windows XP. It didn't work under Opera, IE7 or Firefox 1.5.0.6 on XP or Firefox 2.0, 2.0.0.1 on Linux. When I upgrades from Firefox 1.5.06 to 2.0.0.1 on my other XP box, it could view the page fine.
Anyway, the customize links seems to always work: Latitude D520 620 820 420
The links works for me. Although, when I replace dell.com with either 143.166.224.244 or 143.166.83.38, it gives me a page not found error.
Perhaps this link would work better? What OS, browser, and country are you connecting from?
Who else could pull off such a heist? Hell, she could probably steal the entire mountain range, but she was feeling lazy.
Now they need to find her.

But that's still solar power.
I don't think Apple has anything available in MP3 on their iTunes store. As far as I know, it's all in AAC.
Other companies do that as well. There were unskippable commercials on the Shrek 2 DVD. Someone should compile a list of such movies, so we know to pirate them instead of buying them. ;)
You pay for convenience and speed. Want your music RIGHT NOW? You have to pay extra. Don't want to drive to the store? You have to pay extra.

That would be interesting to see on the Wii. It loads slashdot.org when I type ./ on the Wii browser as well.

Well, there are the board of directors, the stock holders, and the parent company and its board/stockholders.

So, if a separate PIN were used for magnetic and chip transactions, there wouldn't be a problem?
