I'm not sure where in the history of apple would lead people to believe something would be different this time. Apple has "their way" of doing products, mac os x only on apple computers (despite it working out other hardware), just to give an example. They've never been about "completely open", and this is going to put off a portion of potential customers (the actual number is arguable), but the vast majority won't care, in fact, the vast majority might not even mind, or actually _like_ apple's tight control over things.
As an iPhone owner myself, I was really excited to see what was possible with the apps people were writing for jailbroken phones, and it was really cool.. some were quite buggy, but there was definitely potential, even in this unsanctioned way. Now there will be an official SDK and even better apps i am really excited. Now sure, these apps may already exist for winmobile or rim or palm even, but that is taking out the very most important factor, the interface and interaction with an iphone. some folks may not like it, or want one, but I've found it to be incredibly useful with myself using for more features on it then i did on any previous phone.
Could be worse, the article could've read "Apples Quicktime Update Bricks After Effects!!" as its currently presented I'm not feeling nearly enough rage.
but it wasn't broken, you voided your warranty and it worked. could have stayed that way.. why apply the new software if you were happy where things were? especially when it was said that if you've modified the firmware of the radio, that the software update could have unexpected consequences.
me? i like the third party apps, so i just haven't installed the update, phone still works fine. it is also worth mentioning, that having third party apps installed isn't what bricks the phone, its the third party modifiers for unlocking from at&t solely.
I thought it was AT&T hindering the device not apple, so why do they need to be less paranoid?
Actually this all seems silly to me. Silly if true, I should say. I bought an iphone because I liked it, some other phone having gps isn't going to make me like it less.
i'm glad someone killed the child-like wonder FSJ had instilled in my life, next assignment? an exposé on proving santa claus isn't real, just in time for xmas
Adding is easy, when it suggests a word, you click the X next to it to add the word you typed.. not intuitive in the slightest, but it works.. trick is that you can't remove words you've added to the dictionary (least not without resetting the device).
can't turn it off, but it is pretty smart, it even seems to detect my drunk typing and leave them as a jumbled mess to protect me from saying something regrettable.
well once apple aquires amd, then they could aquire hard drive manufacturers aaaaand RAM manufactures aaaand optical drive aaaaand etc etc.. this article was just silly, where is the foot icon?
It just seems to be in people's nature to blow things out of proportion and get all worked up over nothing. iPhone looks nifty, I can't afford one at the time, but probably in the future. as for Leopard, some of the features shown are neat, but not making me have apple fever. Really, I always thought it was going to go down like this. WWDC will allow El Jobso to reveal the "TOP SECRET" features, let the devs have some time to support them, etc.
and really, I don't think anyone was expecting a release before the end of June, so this is 3 whole months? not that big of a deal.
If only the Apple mafia hadn't shown up in their blue jeans and black mock turtlenecks, and forced them to buy more expensive hardware. If Apple had just donated the hardware it would be even cheaper. If only it were 300 years in the future and the Federation of Planets have given up monetary value.. then the students could get their work done in any OS whilst sipping Raktajino.
Suprise, they can run any of the three OS's you listed.. maybe the University actually put a little more thought into this than the amount of time it takes someone to post a comment suggesting this is all so terrible.
You're partially correct with Mac laptops. When they go to "sleep" they aren't completely powering off, and it's not the same as Hibernate. However; should a Mac stay in sleep until the battery dies, before the battery dies the OS will go into hibernation, writing the contents of RAM to the HDD, next time it powers up with electricity there will be a small progress bar at the bottom.
Kind of a nice way to use hibernate only when necessary, however, I'm sure some people wouldn't mind having hibernate as an option rather than the OS doing so only when it determines as such.
not saying this is the case for the original poster. but i've worked with a lot of unit photographers for motion pictures, they're usually aorund the 5K to 7K a day rate, even on the crappier films they're easily 3K a day.
Quite right.. I don't understand what the fascination is to declaring everything either dead or a ______ killer these days. Here is what I think will likely happen. June rolls around, the True Believers snatch this up as fast as they can. There is a difference now though, whereas with the original iPod being $399, it only worked on Macintosh at the time, it still sold in the nature of 370,000 during it's first year. Granted, that's not all that much, but it was also with hardly anyone knowing about it. The iPhone on the other hand, _everyone_ is going to know about it, and it will work on both Macintosh and Windows, even at 499, i don't think they'll have a problem selling them, if for no other reason that they're cool and it'll be a status symbol. Kids will start saving now.
So after a few million are sold, they can drop the price, and come out with a model with more memory for the same, and this will cascade down the market just like the original iPod did. Just not everyone can afford one at release doesn't mean they won't be able to withing a year.
I don't mean to sound like a condescending douche, so I hope I don't if you've tried all this stuff:
A good way to understand the system layout in OS X is look through it in Column View, starting at "Macintosh HD", or whatever you've named your hard drive.. This should dump you at the root level of the drive, where you'll see Applications, Library, System, Users (and some other stuff maybe). Applications are where all appplications available to any users are, Library is where the global setting for all users are, System is where the system keeps its stuff, and Users are where the user only directories are. inside of Users you'll find your home folder. Inside of there is another applications folder (i never put anything in there, a folder called desktop (contents of this are what you actually see on your desktop). Documents, Library etc. etc.
I think column view is really useful when people are trying to understand the layout of the system.
As for what's going on behind the scenes, welll, that depends on just how specific you really want to know. Of course you could run top from the terminal, but that might not be what you really mean. For more technical stuff you really just have to read up on how OS X works, a book will do that.
CLI stuff I understand is always a pain for people coming from a different background. I don't think there is really any helpful way of getting around that other than reading up on the OS X way of things, and i know that totally sucks. In my experience, I came from OS 9, so my mind was a completely blank slate to the CLI when I first got on OS X.
Your mini pinwheeling. Yeh, you friend is right, something is wrong, might just need a clean install, but on the other hand. I used to have that mini too (with only 512), if youre hitting virtual memory at all, then you're going to pinwheel, the drives in those are so slow, 4800 as i recall. I ended up getting a new Core Duo, and boy does it make a world of difference. I know replacing yours isn't probably ideal, but i think i ended up selling mine for 350 which made a new core duo far more afforadble.
There is actually another way to get the date on the desktop, I recall seeing this somewhere, but I don't remember where, so I can't give credit, only say "it wasn't me"...
Go to System Preferences -> International -> Formats
In the Dates section, click on Customize, drag the day of the month and day into the input line. Highlight them and copy it from the input line and Cancel back to the Formats Pane.
Now, in the Times section, click on Customize, In the input line, you can paste them. When you close, they will now show up in the date on the top left of the menu babr.
For a [THIS WORD REMOVED DUE TO AUTHORS REFUSAL TO USE] and some developers: Hurray, we have sdk!.
For some other developers: well, this sdk is way below our expectations.
For normal people: S-B-Wha?

Yes, everyone is so dumb for falling for the hype, we can't resist marketing, there is no choice, there is only what apple tells us.
;)
and you're the only sane person in a town of crazies
Don't even have to go that far anymore..
Launch iChat, Share screen..
voila
I think you've discovered why they don't support 3rd party apps right now.. gotta get the iphone OS up to snuff still.
but thats not as sensational.
but it wasn't broken, you voided your warranty and it worked. could have stayed that way.. why apply the new software if you were happy where things were? especially when it was said that if you've modified the firmware of the radio, that the software update could have unexpected consequences.

he sure didn't care for the AppleTV, they must not have paid him that month
check it out http://www.publictivity.com/iPhoneChat/ not perfect, but it's coming along

the MOAB didn't discover all of those 62 bugs, they found 31, 6 of which involved 3rd party software.
Yes, If if if.

no, i hit cmd control space (to bring up quicksilver) and enter the address i wish to go to, or a few letters of the bookmark.
