Corporatism sounds like an alternate form of democracy where the corporations replace the electoral college and you have to buy a share to become a voting citizen. -----
Seems to me the crowd proclaiming Quake's causing murders might have more of a case when they people playing the game are actually controlling their character through direct murderous thoughts directed at other people. -----
Are you sure it's not just that the current sponsoring companies are generally "cool"? Because if this sort of thing is accepted, it be more difficult to remove (once the precedent is set)?
How would this go over if, say, Microsoft joined in?
(It also makes me think of the PBS Ads...er...sponsorships that have slowly evolved more and more into the exact same ads we're seeing on the standard networks.) -----
Does the recent news concerning physicists realization of a more exact gravitational constant necessitate a recalculation of the meaning of life? Perhaps 42.1? -----
At least he's showing a slight bit more sense by realizing who's committing the crime (rather than merely insisting that his songs be removed from Napster's "servers"...).
Whether or not going after the individual users is doable in any sort of (economically intelligent) way is a different matter. -----
The vast (90+%) majority of slashdotters don't post or email their opinions, and I'd bet they're generally happy with Mr. Taco's choices of what fits into "News for Nerds"...
I'd hate to see the site altered to fit the 3% loudest readers.
From the Wired article: Metallica is no stranger to referring to legal issues in its work -- the band's album "And Justice For All" was nominated for a Grammy in 1995.
You've got to be kidding me. I can't believe they said that.
This weekend I'm merging a month's worth of new work that substantially improves it.
Again, I don't know that I'd be able to understand his explanation of what improves it, but saying you've got code to make your product better than your competitor's product doesn't exactly qualify as having a better product than your competitor's product.
I think that the current CVS mainline is as good as MP3.
(emphasis his)...Now I don't know enough about audio encryption (or rather, I don't know anything at all), but it sounds to me like the author himself thinks that the format is currently only on even ground with MP3. With the disadvantage that MP3 is everywhere already.
John Katz did not make up "ChickClickers"... I'm not saying I would have titled my article that, but the name is (at least) from ChickClick (according to that article up there a highly navigable, user-friendly and colorfully-designed site).
It's annoying how much satisfaction slashdotters seem to take in pointing out Katz's faults.
Shew, that's a lot of stuff to go through...especially when I don't have any idea what 80% of it is talking about. They need some sort of simplified newbie begin-bug-reporting wizard thing.
Anyway, I entered the font size one, though I can't imagine it could be too helpful (who knows which tiny variation in my machine is causing it to occur?).
I'd report the crashing problems, but I can't think of anything to say other than that no matter what I do, it crashes upon trying to load a new page. How helpful is that?
Am I missing something, or is there no uninstall? No entry in the Add/Remove programs, either...(On NT4, btw).
Boy, from the rest of these posts I'm assuming it's just me, but slashdot.org has tiny tiny fonts, and most other pages (like yahoo.com, or my own geeklife.com) crash the browser.
Any other NT4 users out there successfully using this? Any one who has Netscape3 and 4.7 installed having any problems?
Ultima Online problem: Everyone'll want to be Luke Skywalker, or Han Solo. But for the Star Wars universe to work at all there have to be hundreds manning all those market stores in Tatooine, and pushing those buttons on the Death Star.
EverQuest problem: I can see a group of players spending hours standing around the Sand People respawn point, just waiting to bonk some uglies with their light sabers so they get another pixel added to their XP bar.
Even in the Star Wars universe I don't want to pay a subscription fee to have the equivalent of a service industry job.
As shown by this shop selling both Scotch Tape (9th listed) and Tesa Kristallklar (2nd listed)...The Tesa is about 3 times more expensive, but still pretty darned cheap (1.95 DM is about US$0.96) per roll.
I'm guessing Kristallklar probably translates as "Crystal Clear"?
A copy of StarCraft ended up aboard the shuttle, orbiting earth 153 times. Now everyone Blizzard thanked for being a beta tester in their manual has had their name in space.
The same might happen with Diablo 2...Or (if StarCraft went to space), is there a more appropriate location to take a copy of Diablo 2 (think double hockey sticks)...

They're having a chat today specifically about the Napster shenanigans at 5pm PT (GMT -8). Show up 1/2 hour early to submit questions/comments.
As the press release says "Hold nothing back: this is Metallica, after all. They can take it."

at today's rate, anyhow.

I'd hate to be expressing my love to a date and have "Nothing Compares 2 U" start up accidentally.
How does the player differentiate between conversation and orders?

Just because a lot of people put a lot of work into this project doesn't mean it doesn't look like crap.
And again, just because he hasn't released an internet playable RPG doesn't mean he can't comment on one.
I'm sure Baby Geniuses took a lot of work, but that doesn't mean it doesn't suck, or that I can't say it sucks.
[Disclaimer: I'm not criticizing Arianne, I'm just defending the right of any of us to criticize it]

Ah, there is a simplified bug reporting page:
http://www.mozilla.org/quality/he lp/bug-form.html
That's extremely useful.
Ok, both bugs reported. Thanks for the encouragement.

Boy, I'd have to rate Cmdr Taco's post "-1, Troll"...and a mighty successful one at that.

Film & Sound Editing, Sound, and Visual Effects.
I've never quite understood the difference between sound and sound editing.
They're saying the code they started with and later scrapped was Netscape 5 and thus this iteration is 6...
