What is the point of enriching a nation if it become toxic in 50 years?
If we don't have a technological solution in 30, then we deserve it.
Secondly, we don't have Fossil Fuels to last us more than 20 years at this rate.
The objective goal of mankind should be to adapt its economy to extreme short term solutions and work as hard as they can for a technological solution in the long term.
Political solutions and conservation will not save us from our own demise if you look at the grand scheme of things.
just a side comment. we should remember that PUBLIC HEALTH has saved more lives than surgeries and medicines.
Health Experts sadly report that when comparing lives saved by Public Health and Surgeries and Medicines that patients still all died anyways in about 80 years.
Southern asia is probably one of the main providers of cheap labor for western companies... but with a complete upheaval of their countries and entire region, who's going to worry about working for those companies?
Actually, one of the few benefits of the Black Death in the Middle Ages in Europe was the fact that it created a wealthier middle class. Since there weren't enough artisans around to fill the gaps, wage increased and for the first time there was a class of people who weren't either really poor or really rich.
Microsoft is onto something, they make software that is easy to use and everyone knows how to use it,
I do corp help desk for a living supporting MS Office Applications and I would disagree with this part of your statment.
MS Office Apps are not intuitive nor easy to use for the average Joe office worker. It is why they pay me money to show people how to use them on a daily basis.
You may of course believe them to be so, but put someone who has no training infront of a windows box and you see the same mistakes over and over again by different people. Its a kind of bashing a head against my desk kind of job but its a living.
I could give specific examples about Track Changes and a few other settings that people think they should act a certain way but don't, but I could go on and on.
On OS X, I just stare at the mounted CD and it doesn't do anything.
As a power user on Windows I usually turned the Autoplay off. Mostly because I usually wanted particular data off the cd or just wanted in the drive to play a game that needed the cd in the drive, but not actually do anything.
Having the quite the autoplayed app was more annoying than not having it run... at least for me.
You say historically multicultural societies don't work - what is your definition of such societies?
I don't really agree with the Grandparent, but Balkan Wars come to mind... Consider the problems in Serbia and Albanians right now in Montenegro.
Multi-cultural societies will work in situations where the cultures share a common belief structure and usually speak a similar language and where the children adapt better than the parents.
In societies where the children of the immigrants cannot integrate... Then divisions and resentment will run deep. This is not limited to cultures either but also class and religion even amount those of the same background and ethenicity.
Like Northern Ireland... Or the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka.
I'm not saying I support xenophobia or that it is a policy that these countries should support, but to claim that there aren't issues between immigrants and natives is just ignorance and trying to avoid the issue.
So yes, it is a political struggle, in some sense. The Muslims are demanding a political change in Europe from Western-style democracy to Sharia Law. They want the benefits of Western civilization without becoming involved in it. It is a culture war, not a political war. It has very little to do with the Middle East, but rather the expansion of Islam and Wahabi law across the whole of Europe.
I suspect in some ways that the Muslims of Europe will be the new "Jews" of Europe prompting a revival of right wing parties in Germany, Netherlands, and France.
With the murder of Van Gogh and the revival of the NDP Political Party in Germany and banning of headscarves in France, Germany in various locations I think the stage is slowly going towards that direction.
This maybe a very bad thing or maybe just overrated worries, but I suspect the riots in France are not helping the situation.
Because if he knows you'll find something on his hard drive once you decrypt it, he may decide to disappear during the 90 days it takes you to find it, whereas if you can keep in custody until you finish he wont have that opportunity?
If fate would have it and you are accused of a crime you did not commit and are in jail for 90+ days, will you have the same opinion?
Just because you think this wouldn't happen to you because you don't commit crimes doesn't make you immune.
You don't need to authenticate to install applications on Mac OS X. Installing applications - like Microsoft Office - involves just dragging the application (or the folder it's in) from the CD into the Applications folder on your hard disk. Even things like Real One Player and Windows Media Player work this way.
I would also like to point out that even when you are dragging and droping apps into the Apps folder it will prompt you once to say "You are about to run (application name) for the first time. Are you sure you want to do this?" which is a pretty good fail safe for programs that are trying to run silently.
After a short while, typing in your password becomes as much of an unconscious acticity as pressing "OK" on a dialog box. I think we need blinking lights, horns, mandatory timers, and permission from your sysadmin before you can do anything stupid.
I don't know about you but I don't install applications on my computer every day of the week.
And btw... OS X apps usually don't have "OK" buttons unless the apps are made by Microsoft.
You would say "We get to work at 1:pm, what time to people in hong kong go to work??"
I take it you've never worked in an industry that has 1st, 2nd, 3rd shifts.
You know.... Like 24 hour tech support... Hospitals... Military (well they use their own time... and might as well mention the Navy does run off of UTC on all ships)
And the thing is people in different cultures also don't have the same habbits. You are assuming that people in Hong Kong have the same work hours as us. Take the Japanese vs the French. One nations average works 80+ hours depending on profession and the other enjoys a nice 35 hour work week.
Back in the days of UO when quake 1 was popular ping times rule because everyone was on a modem. I really dont think this is a viable issue today with solid broadband connections.
Oh! To be in a college dorm playing UO on a T1 back in 1997... Pizza delivered.... Beer in hand... Regent Bag full of black pearl and night shade...
Blame all the jerks that walked out the front (or back) door with non-empty boxes they didn't pay for...
I used to work at a retail Media Play Chain back in the late 90's and one of the managers speculated with me that employees steal more than the customers, but loss is attributed to the customers.
After all, employees don't get barely paid above min wage and have access to the tools to remove the security devices which makes it easier.
Most of the time the employees will have a customer in cahoots who will go up to the register but they will ring the item up as a different price and everything will look legit and then the item is walked out of the store. When inventory time comes the item is counted as a loss due to customer shoplifting.
It's like being offended that walmart has stolen goods detectors at the exits.
No. It would be more like if Walmart put a goods detector in your house to check to make sure you weren't bringing in competitor goods or in fact making use of your goods in ways they did not want in order for you to pay twice for them.
Oh noes! It looks like you just used the plunger to clean the bathroom upstairs and it clearly states in the EULA that the plunger you purchased at Walmart must be used only for the licensed bathroom downstairs!
In that scenario, I would be very offended.

Archaeological was his name. His parents Paleological and Astronomical and they thought it would be fitting when choosing his name as a baby.
However, as you can tell, Arechaeological had been looking for years for a replacement name and figured Golaith was good as any.

Actually, Bruce Sterling at EFF wrote a really good paper on the subject of Bacteria and resistance to antibiotics:

Imaging the economic effects of a spreading flu that was lethal - people would quit going to work, you could see much commerce grinding to a halt.
Then again it might induce a virtual society in which everyone works from home and interacts through only through the internet.
Kind of depressing though... Oh wait...
Therefore, the stronger your immune system (above a certain threshold), the more likely that you'll die from this disease.

I only need 4 reasons not to upgrade.
1. OS X

3. Win2000
4. $250
You know it's illegal to install Mac osX on non-mac hardware, so why are you doing it!
Because if it wasn't illegal, it wouldn't be as much fun!
Does a defenseless girl excuse the actions of a rapist too?
No but she can sue the property that she was on at the time for not providing proper lighting at night. (actually happens on occasion)

Joe Desktop doesn't care and simply installs whatever malware is needed to listen to the cd.
Joe Desktop does care when that malware crashes his system and makes it unusuable.
