This is because all OOo files are actually compressed ZIP files. Go ahead: try renaming an Ooo file to a .zip extension. You can unzip it, and even pull out the XML text of the file (a useful ability, might I add).

Fundamentalist Christians. Get it right. I went to a Catholic school and Catholic high school, and what do you think they taught in their classrooms? Evolution, Big Bang theory, and all of the other real sciences. The only time Creationism was even mentioned was in Religion/Theology classes, where they said that it was wrong, and that science must be listened to in order to fully understand your faith. FYI, the guy who first proposed the "hypothesis of the primeval atom" in 1927, Georges LeMaitre, was a priest. This theory later came to be known as the Big Bang theory.

I think that you are using the phrase personality deficiency as a catch-all, which is a very dangerous thing to do. It's no better than the mental "hospitals" of the 19th century, IMO, which would bascially label you "crazy" or not: depression, schizophrenia, and every other mental illness was basically the same. Similarly, you can't say that all marriages break up for essentially the same reason. This is flawed thinking.

Here's the problem as I see it. Even if we manage to build a sentient being from the ground up, or let a machine become sentient, it will likely have the same questions we all do, because it cannot know what it felt like to be non-sentient, by definition.

Think about it this way. At some point in your life, you crossed over from non-sentience to sentience, probably while you were an infant. Can you describe what it felt like to be a baby? No. You can look at photo upon photo of your baby self, and talk to your parents about your baby habits, so you might be able to know the concrete facts about your childhood. However, nothing you do will allow you to know the qualitative details from your own personal perspective.

Similarly, a computer which goes from non-sentience to sentience would be in the same conundrum. Even if its non-sentient self recorded every single memory transaction, and the sentient version read it over, nothing it could do could allow it to feel its prior self.

"True" wireless power is not all it's cracked up to be. To do it, you'd either have to a) spew power all over the place, a la Tesla, or b) use a focused beam and send it directly at the device. The first option is a tremendous waste of energy, and the second would probably be unreliable (as well as cancer-causing).

Technically, you should be able to submerge a motherboard inside an office water bottle if you are extremely careful. First, you'd need to make sure that the motherboard and the bottle are extremely clean (as in no dust, oils, or salts anywhere). Then, you'd fill it with distilled water, and submerge the motherboard. Since the water's distilled, and you've gotten rid of most of the ions in it (except for those pesky H+'s and OH-'s which will stick around in equilibrium, if I remember my chemistry correctly), the water shouldn't conduct. If you then sealed it, it *should* stay ion-free.

Of course, this is in theory. In actuality, I'd probably test it with something like a $5 calculator's circuits first. :)

Luckily, that doesn't matter. The energy is still hitting our planet and being absorbed by it in some form. Since the world economy dictates that the power generated by humans is approximately equal to the power dissipated by us, we would be creating as much heat energy as the IR energy that the paint absorbs. There are really only two significant power losses: the radiation which we ourselves throw out into space, and the matter and heat which we hurl out in the form of rockets.

There's no way in hell the MPAA or networks would ever allow that. ReplayTV was almost sued-to-death over their show-sharing over the Internet support which is why they had to drop it in new versions.

It's not show-sharing, per se. What you're talking about is people sharing the shows that they've recorded via the Internet. What I'm talking about is using the BitTorrent protocol to distribute them. It would be strictly controlled by Tivo, and Tivo would be contracting with networks directly.

Yes, I agree. Arrested Development is the best show since Seinfeld, IMO. The only reason that it's not better is that it's only been on for a season and a quarter, and has yet to show whether it can stay at its current level of quality.

Furthermore, it has to build up a larger fanbase. Though nearly every critic that I've ever read has said that it's the best show on TV, its ratings are pathetic. For once, I commend FOX on its judgment: it didn't cancel the show after the first season. I think that it was just so they could say, "Look at us! We have Arrested Development, winner of 5 Emmys in its freshman season!" I just hope that it continues to win Emmys and continues to elude cancellation.

  17. BitTorrent distribution? on TiVo Moves to Bypass Cable · · Score: 2, Interesting

If I were Tivo, I'd try to set up deals where shows can be distributed over the Internet via a BitTorrent-like protocol. IMO, this is one of the easiest ways in which they'd be able to maintain a viable business strategy. There are several advantages to doing this: 1. Low maintenance costs. Aside from hosting the tracker and a high-speed seeder, the bandwidth required would be extremely low. Also, since the torrents would be distributed only to Tivos, they wouldn't have the MPAA or anyone like that worrying about PC users getting a hold of them. 2. Tivo Series2 models (the standalone units) already have all of the hardware required. In case you don't know, Tivos can be networked via a USB slot in the back. Though the hardware is actually USB 2.0, the drivers are 1.0. They'd simply need to change this. Also, a software update would be necessary, but Tivo already does this on a regular basis. 3. Money, money, money. As mentioned by someone already, small networks would jump on the chance to have this type of distribution. In fact, this opportunity would even turn Tivo into a cable-like provider, maybe even putting them into the black again. Time after time again, I've seen posts on Slashdot where many pine for such a television distribution medium. I just hope Tivo sees the golden opportunity that its new strategy affords.
