Most of the software used in the precincts I've been to use illegal software...they should try getting us licenses for actually usefull software instead of making deals with the cheapest companies. They also issued us copies of ERD Commander which I believe we stopped using shortly after we got them because we have much better PE distributions at our disposal.

So I can ssh from behind the best buy proxy to check my mail now? Awesome!
In all seriousness...I still have to forward my gmail to my best buy account to get any mail from work.
I work at best buy and last I checked we have a 3800+ X2 Athlon64 for less than $900 sitting right next to the other HP's. I'm on Geek Squad and all of us make the sales people convince the customers to go AMD because about 1/10 of the Pentium D's overheat out of the box or are dead already. The amount of heat coming out of those things are ridiculous. Also an "Advanced Security" (NAV2K5, Spysweeper, and Critical Updates install) takes far less time on our AMD systems so we prefer to work on them.
With the lack of licensing problems a company can just make thousands of copies of a hard drive to be put in the company's desktops and say goodbye to a 3 week wait to get a crashed computer back up. (Assuming they use a standard computing platform throughout the company.)
I'm reminded of the patch for GTA:VC that put the real names on the cars...if a game is good enough, the fan base for it will make a "realism patch" to add in all the real player and team names. Not sure what will happen to the console games...but last I heard the new consoles have some sort of a patching system. Whether or not it will be feasible to utilize that system for a patch of that nature is yet to be seen.
I was actually using BB's learning system as an example for the scottish police...but yeah I would love to have Best Buy switch to all OSS but I know it won't happen.
I'm reminded of the "E-Learning" system at Best Buy...I think if they switched to Open Office and had a short but mandatory training module before they started working with it on how to use and convert any applicable proprietary formats to be compatible with all the Microsoft things they could save money on licensing. Unless Microsoft drops their prices WAY down for corporate customers they have plenty of money to implement an OSS solution and integrate it to be just as easy to use.
I say combine it with mapquest and drive those directions out before ever leaving the house...I'd pay for a service like that since I have the worst directional skills ever.
I've spotted and used these jacks in the Atlanta and Dallas/Fort Worth Airports...they are also located in the convention center in Fort Worth but it doesn't provide DHCP, luckily it was a standard 255.255.255.0 subnet with 192.168.0.X IP's. I think they're hoping people won't notice them if they put little plastic covers or stickers over the unused ports.
You sir, have my complete support, regardless of the karma costs. My last flight involved 3 hours of waiting and I didn't break out the laptop till the begining of hour two. If I could get from the airport entrance (Here in Atlanta) to my plane in an hour or so I'd be completely content to be without wireless in the airport, but I've had to wait up to 14 hours before due to delays. Although WIFI costs are probably insignificant compared to the costs involved with speeding things up, I'd still like to see more effort in that area.
It would buy XP Home off newegg...but yeah I love my Gentoo install but I couldn't claim linux is as easy to use as windows and keep a straight face. Eventually the user would upgrade their hardware, or want to install some software and they'd be shit out of luck. Also which "Default Stock Kernel" do you have that has wireless support automatically compiled in?
Dropping a couple grand on a good port isn't going to be a problem soon, buddy...your little game just got posted on Slashdot. I predict a 1000% rise in the amount of sales over the next week.
How is this a Troll?
This is a completely legitimate point, my VB gave me a splitting headache after 10-15 minutes consistently. It was a bad idea and no sob story is going to change that...Doom 3 looks way more "3D" than Mario Tennis ever did.
Obviously I'm not talking about actively attempting suicide but if something really usefull takes a week or two off our lives then who's really complaining? Would you give up a year of your life (on the end of course) for a billion dollars? Some would, some wouldn't...this is the same concept on a smaller scale. You get convenience and save time, but maybe the time is being deducted off the end. I'll make my personal decision when more results come in with some proof.

This reminds me of a calvin and hobbes strip...anyone have a link to it? If not I'll upload one from the actual comic in my bathroom.

That AC totally set himself up for that one...
My thoughts exactly, I can't imagine this happening very often with a well organized large company.

I kinda liked it...better than another Doom clone.

It's a tatoo that says "Unclean" and you have to wear it across your forehead like that goldenpalace.com lady.

How about : FUCK IT! : You're going to die eventually anyway. ;)
They should add warning labels...those work great on smokers. ;)
I can't afford that...and it seems like this would require more bandwidth than standard hard drives could handle if it's just 1 unit.
