I see this more as a move to compete with Oracle. Not to put all the hosting companies out of business or even to compete with Sun. I think the overall tone is that the infrastructure MS designs to support this will allow them to host anything. Not necessarily that they really intend to host everything.
Face it, Sun has proven that they don't have what it takes to beat MS. And getting Google to sponsor their office suite isn't enough either.
Companies will use B2B to quickly build a business and the required market relationsips. Then narrowly focus on filling a niche and will stay focused on that niche (instead of becomming a larger one-stop-eShop).
In my fast paced industry the most important factor is Time-To-Market. Thus, I regret, that most of the time we don't care about extensive design, project management, perfect code.
This is a perfect fit for Visual Studio. The boss can walk in and shoot an idea at me. In an extremely short amount of time I can have a proof-of-concept prototype that he can take around to the different business units to get buy-in.
Some people get so anal about thinking that everybody should always use the most pure methods and tools. Sometimes software needs to be written super-quick. And you thank your stars for a sweet interface like Visual Studio to make you look like a genious!
I've got a computer science degree with a few years in the workforce and am constantly trying to stay in front of the coding methodology curve. But I use OOP/AOP/Web Services, etc. to help me work faster and smarter. Not so I can feel at peace with the 0s and 1s for being a purist.
I grew up in a beach resort. You could walk into any grocery store and pick up a free booklet titled Sunny Day. There would be helpful maps, tips for tourists and cool coupons.
So was everybody walking around talking about how Sunny Day is so good for humanity and is a beacon of light in a greedy world? No. Everybody knew that Sunny Day was making money on the publication. That's why they put out the booklet. If they couldn't make money on it anymore, guess what? No more free maps. No more free coupons.
Google is just a big Sunny Day. They want to make money. They think free maps are cool, sure. But if free maps, free email, freely searchable books, free internet searching, etc. didn't contribute to advertizing dollars anymore they'd probably put those on the back burner and work on other projects that made Google richer.
MS wants more money and so does Google. Google just gives away free stuff.
MS realizes that what Google is trying to do is huge. If Google succeeds they will have a monopoly on the searching of digital books. MS is not entering this market because it cares about the market. It is doing so to nip Google's dominance in the bud.
This is just an analysis of the business rationale. So, please don't reply with statements like, "Yea but wouldn't you rather Google have the monopoly than Evil MS?".
What is interesting is that Google is not in it for the pure benefit to humaniity of books being digitally searchable. They are in it for the advertising dollars. Period. If there were no ad dollar potential in digitized books Google wouldn't spend money on the project.
Don't kid yourselves people. Every move Google makes is made with one goal in mind: Advertizing. And to Google, Advertizing == Money.
No iron chains. But I'll have to admit guard rails on cliffs are nice. Automatic Traction Control is nice. Database row locking is nice. Strongly typed languages are nice. Sure, there are very rare situations when these become a pain. But very very rare.
I'd say that 80% of those features are catch up. The other 20% are not necessary in other languages because, by their very nature, lend themselves to abuse/misuse. From that list I doubt that Perl 6 will be adopted by anybody but the people who already program in Perl.
Java, and C# (especially C#), however are truely on the cutting edge and are converting Perl users.
I mean, seriously, Threading, Events, Reflection, this stuff has been around for over a decade (probably two).
That is definately true in general. But I find myself getting carried away with that logic. New CPU? Well might as well get a new mobo. New mobo? Might as well get faster ram. Faster ram? Might as well get better video card, etc.
Then I've basically bought a new computer. I planned ahead and got a AMD Socket 939 mobo when I built my last machine. I'm keeping an eye on the dual-core processors. Hopefully after a few months I'll be able to double my processor speed with only a few hundred bucks. I can't wait! It's just nice to at least have the option to replace only the cpu if that's all you need at the time.
That's why we are at the top of the food chain. It's nice not to have to worry about a snake eating your young while you're out foraging for food isn't it?
Personally, I like being at the top of the food chain.
Did you read the article? Only a small portion of it talked about the possibility of Russia and Norway sitting on large gas reserves.
The main portion talked about shorter shipping lanes. I see ships using 40% less fossil fuel to get the job done. This is good is it not?
The other part spoke of shifting stocks of fish. Snow crabs eat ice-algae which is receeding into Russia territory. Somebody's gonna harvest them no matter where they are. So this one is a wash. No real "impact".
The other fish issue is pink salmon ending their run in different places. After they spawn they die of natural causes. Before they died in unreachable places. Now, due to melting ice creating new "rivers", they "finish their run" in accessable places so we can harvest them just before they would die anyway. So this one is a definate bonus for the world. U2's always trying figure out how to feed the world's hungry. Well U2 should be happy about this news. With the increased salmon supply one of 2 things will happen: 1)Salmon will be cheaper 2)more salmon will be available to the world's poor.
Just because somebody's making money doesn't necessarily mean it's evil.
Don't like Microsoft? Well wait till Larry Ellison starts playing hardball. This man is ruthless and there aren't many people who disagree with that statement. His goal is to be the richest man in the world. Gates is still just a nerd at heart. MySQL only indirectly competes with Microsoft. But MySQL is directly competing with Oracle. Sooner or later they will probably find themselves in the gun-sites of Larry and it won't be pretty.
MySQL knows this and that's why they recently declared that they never intend to go after Oracle's customer base. Because they know if they even so much as think about it Larry will eat them for lunch.
My comment was meant to be thought pervoking. To answer you're question with an illustration:
If I owned my own contracting company charging $60/hr installing/maintaining open source software for companies the typical/. OSSers would praise my activism and my worthy cause.
If I was a developer developing a valuable OSS software and I made a comment on/. about closing source and/or charging for my software (read Google) I would get flamed out of existence.
Isn't it a pity that he was giving his time an effort out of a pure heart of charity and OSSness. Now he's a whore to the billion dollar corporate king of Internet advertizing. Google is in business for Google.
If they ever succeed in killing Microsoft they will keep right on making more money and serving up ads and taking over the Internet. You don't think so?
Has it ever bugged you that Google doesn't want to open source their search engine, or Gmail, or any of Google's other closed source software?
If you were consistent with yourself, it would bug the HECK out of you.
i have never seen that attitude (well only from some idiots, but i don't count them).
I see it every day. Especially lately with the Nessus news etc. These guys are working on Linux security for crying out loud and they get blasted by OSSers when they close their source just to stay alive as a company. Their competitors are using their generous/free code against them.
I don't rember reading a single post blasting the what the code-mooching competitors were doing. Get a grip/.ers!
Either start sending these valuable develoeprs donations, allow them to charge, or watch them all not have time for it anymore.
the OSS developers who would like to get paid for their superb work. IBM is making it hand over fist deploying OSS and we think it's swell. But as soon as a charitable developer even thinks about a dollar bill the entire OSS community takes him out to the woodshed for being so selfish and violating the spirit of OSS.
It's not anti-OSS to get paid for contributing good code, people!
He didn't spit on anybody's face. He just admitted that he was tired of giving away his software so his competitiors could put him out of business. He was trying to run a business (not a charity) off of OSS. The OSS services people get away with murder by charging for their services. OSS developers get murdered if they try to charge for their work. Doesn't anybody realize the obvious OSS double-standard here?
It's that they fear that in a war-time situation we could "abuse" our control over the Internet? Of course they wouldn't probably come right out and put it like that. But that may be the main concern. If that's the case then it's safe to assume that the Internet is similar to GPS. The EU/EN understand that we strategically disable service from time to time in different places. So they're solution there is simply to build their own GPS system. Can't really do that with the Internet though.
I don't think Windows, Linux, Unix, Mac or any other OS guarantees that the product is 100% secure from all present and future threats. MS takes significant steps toward protecting Windows users and the haters refuse to see how this is a good thing! The truth is that they like the fact that Windows has bugs. The more bugs/security issues the faster the ship sinks.
I see this more as a move to compete with Oracle. Not to put all the hosting companies out of business or even to compete with Sun. Seems like a new company is announcing a new similar technology every month. Why can't I buy one yet?!!
Let's start mass-producing these babies!

when Perl6 is available, it's going to blow the doors off of everyone else for a long time
What features in Perl6 will make your prediction come true?
Judging by the way the article reads, Yoda it was written by. In which case, very old news it is!!

Proof of evolution? Or the pet owners de-evolving . . .

There's a difference between OSS and FOSS!
If these people think that users will really take the time to implement all 180 Solutions just to get rid of spyware they're crazy!
