.NET developers will enjoy the foundation the same way PHP devs enjoy all the PHP-based freebies out there. Who knows, some PHP devs will realize that .NET websites compile down to a DLL which can be handed over to a customer to host in their own datacenter. No more awkward sales pitches about how we can't give you the code or the database. You just have to trust your data with us and our datacenter (oh, and pay for our services now and till forever).

There's a niche out there. Some companies need to have the code and db running in their own data center. PHP shops are scared their code will get stolen or worse, get cut out of the revenue loop after the initial project is finished.

.NET isn't a scripting language. And you don't have to give anybody your code if the customer wants to host your software themselves.

Or just use Java and JSP, right? Yea if you want to do 10X the work for a much less elegant solution. ASP.NET is actually really slick. Of course, you can't just start on Day 1 with a fully implemented Joomla site. But it's definitely the way to go if you're truly doing something new.

They have built credibility in their field. And they only bid on projects that their non-government-employed board of directors deem that they can turn into a profitable endeavor. Electric Boat, General Dynamics, Lockheed-Martin, Boeing, and every other military contractor are all owned by United States citizens (not a single share owned by the US government).

Of course you'll always have the non-conformist Linux nuts.

I also believe in passing laws so the US government can force tax money from your paycheck because they promise that they will do something about climate change. They've always been really good about delivering on their promises. And only the government can force people to do the right thing. Of course you'll always have those pesky idiots who think they have a right to do whatever they want with the money they earn.

Why the hell do you think it's non-existent? Because they don't dare to fly against the USAF. Then we bomb the hell out of them sitting on the tarmac. And how's the A-10 going to be able to focus on it's mission if it's got to fight off all the enemy fighters because we didn't build enough F-22 air-superiority fighters (news flash: the F-15s will wear out someday soon)? I've got huge love for the A-10. I used to live in a city that had an A-10 air base. It was very cool. But having less than 200 F-22s to handle air superiority for the 1,500+ F-35 air to ground fighters the USAF will eventually have seems like a small number to me.

Most of the time there were good reasons for scraping the X planes. But with the F-22 we have an amazing plan that delivers on all of its promises AND it has reached operational status AND the production line is still hot, cranking them out at full capacity. It's taken this program 20+ years to get to this point. Let's build as many of these plans as we can while the opportunity is at hand.

Are you so short-sighted to believe that we should just quit the F-22 and get a new cheaper "6th gen" plan rolling of the production lines in a few years? Keep dreaming! These things take decades to happen. And when they do don't cut the legs out from under the entire effort!

MS has always had an ace in the hole that no other company has figured out so far. Make it easy and profitable for software developers. Ever heard of VB? How about VBA? How about .NET? DirectX? Visual Studio? MS makes it very appealing to write an app with MS technology.

Apple? Everything is a major pain in the ass for developers when compared to the simplicity of developing for Windows.

Google? Let's face it, even Java developers admit now that .NET is far superior, slick and better supported (and isn't getting kicked to the curb by it's creators). Google is still sticking with Java because it's the next best thing that isn't anchored to the evil MS.

And btw, even the iPhone is a pain to develop for. The only reason we've seen 50,000 new apps being written for it since it came out is because you can actually make money writing a simple iFart application. Once developers are required to write useful apps that actually have some complexity the developers will start longing for the simplicity and power of the MS development stack again.
