Basically it doesn't mean much for the layman. The iPhone has been hacked over and over many times. Developers/hackers/uber-geeks alike now have another cool piece of software to rip apart and discover and then make cool mods & bolt-ons. It's just a lot of fun. If you are only into using the phone for its intended purpose then this will be of little value to you.
It's a shame that such a tiny stupid little document reader has so many issues that it has to have regular patches & security updates. I can understand regular updates for an OS. But a glorified doc reader?
The contention is that there were no statistics. Can you link to some? When the #1 performing dealerships in the same geographic area as other poor performing dealerships is closed and the poor performers are allowed to continue operating, how does this make sense statistically?
Would you have voted for BHO if you knew he was going to make a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court who is pro-RIAA and that under BHO's administration we'd see Google, Apple come under major Antitrust scrutiny (but not Microsoft)? What are your thoughts?
Reps & Dems alike know where their bread is buttered. The media got McCain nominated. McCain was the easiest target of the Rep nominees to defeat. Then the media went gaga over BHO and squelched any and all flaws or red flags. Now we're seeing the real BHO. How come we didn't see this coming? Answer: The Media didn't want you to.
You voted for him. But it's completely understandable that you would do otherwise now that you are starting to question if you really knew who BHO was. Still trying to figure out who BHO really is? As he recently (May 27) said at a star-studded Hollywood fundraiser, "You ain't seen nothing yet!"

You know those bumper stickers? How come 90% of the world uses Windows yet they are the only group of the 3 major religions (Mac, Linux, MS) who do NOT actively proselytize members of the other cults? If somebody likes their Mac, can't we just be okay with that? If somebody likes their PC, likewise? Do we really think that if we starve the beast (MS) he'll just spread his wings and fly away to another galaxy?
If I had a dime for every time I've heard a woman say, "I'm not like other women." Every woman thinks all other women are pretty much the same and that they themselves are different and unique.
I used universals to incite a flame war. Hey it's Friday!
You must not be a.NET developer. When the code is compiled, the line number references and file name references are based on where it is being compiled. Which is always on a local developer workstation. Not on the server. The precompiled bits are simply copied over to the production server.
Of course, if you are a PHP guy "compiling" will be unfamiliar to you since PHP is an interpreted language. Thus being slower (all else being equal).
Could a Windows Server Admin worth his/her salt please explain to us what SMB is, who would use it, and if there was a workaround that made the vulnerability a non-issue?
Apple understands that it is 100% true that the hardware reliability affects the perception of the OS. That is why they only give a tiny set of hardware choices. These hardware options have been tested and re-tested to make sure problems will not arise with their OS.
MS does not sell anything but the OS. So no, they are not responsible for the hardware. Not even Apple can make an OS that works perfectly with defective hardware or drivers.
There is, however, basically only one class. It is very difficult to get out of the one basic class because taxes are so high. The motivation to excel in business is limited because, well, taxes minimize any benefit. The poor are elevated to this class, the ambivalent are content there, and the ambitious are frustrated but can't do much about it.
Nothing else breaks before the rescheduled repair mission. With equipment this old if things keep breaking the mission could keep getting rescheduled over and over. [fingers crossed]
Microsoft should be implementing a way to associate your Live ID with your OpenID and use your OpenID to login to Live. But they aren't & I doubt they ever will.
I bet you doubted MS would ever become a provider of Open IDs too didn't ya? This news is progress. Don't be so negative about it.
The legacy COBOL systems are huge and battle-hardened. It took millions upon millions of dollars to build them. It's always cheaper to hire a new $120k/yr developer than to rewrite the entire system.
To wean off of a system like this you have to write all new software in a hardened modern language. Then take chunks of the legacy functionality and methodically convert it over to the new modern-language-based replacement module.
Haven't you seen the Obama web adds all over the place encouraging people to register and cast their vote all in the same simple process?
Whoever registered this fish could have went ahead and cast the vote at the same time.
What's worse than hackable voting machines? A screwed up registration process that can't even tell if you are a dead goldfish. An "erroneous" but valid voter registration will thwart any voting machine.
I know it is bad form to reply to your post's children. But the parent's post is different from mine. The parent points out how the free/cheap & heterogeneous approach is a great fit for small businesses who are forging their way in new territory and answer only to themselves when problems arise. Which is totally fine and good.
My point is that with large mission-critical apps, any problem is a panic-button issue that needs serious attention by any & all vendor resources immediately. Sure, RedHat, MySql and other FOSS options usually offer support packagges. But it is fundamentally a different type of support comittment than what a Microsoft, Oracle or Intel can offer.
Foss support tends to be a best-effort, no-promise-of-resolution approach. MS, Oracle, Intel, etc is a, "If we don't help you reach a resolution on your problem you'll go with another vendor and our hardware/license sales will take a big hit."
The more $$$ on the line the higher chance that your vendor will make it right (Foss or not).
Large companies will gladly pay for an expensive system that comes with guarantee for support. Microsoft + Intel is a good example. If you have a hardware problem and call Intel they will solve your problem because the entire hardware stack is Intel (not so with AMD and others). Same with MS.
If you cobble something cheap/free together you'll likely have a hard time finding a support solution that will take your problem as their own and find a resolution for you no matter how long it takes.
Let me guess... You drive a Prius?

It will be in beta for 5 years. So you have no grounds to complain about anything for a long long time.

It looks like Saturn. So it's probably a gas giant. Bring plenty of GasX with you to neutralize the atmosphere.
We already knew there were planets orbiting other stars.
A wailing siren . . . sounds like a Shampoo description. . . :-D
Are you referring to those old Herbal Essence commercials

I'm a developer and was wondering what kind of testing is done to verify the code. Do they use unit testing? Regression testing?
I'm just curious because keeping 6+ million lines of code almost completely bug free is pretty amazing.
