oo Wow. You know I disagree. I think she made the right decission to not post anonymously. If you look at the site there's nothing wrong with the pictures. It's not like she was hurting the company name by doing it and on a personal note, if I was in her place, I wouldn't want to work for them after they did that. I don't know, I'm proud of who I am, both in real life and online, I'm not afraid to take credit for what I say but that doesn't mean I don't from time to time need to do things anonymously.
Lol that's so funny that you said that. I disagree with some of the censorship that takes place at our school. We used to have Bess installed but they found out that we were using webproxies to get around it so they switched to Sonicwall (which is terrible...some of my faviorite sites it blocks are: Disney, both the republican and democrat webpages, and classroll, a site we use so kids can check their grades online. Sonicwall was a pain because it was hard to get around. He that's exactly what I did to get around it.:-).
Keyloggers and sms messages being tapped. Doesn't sound like a place I'd like to work. Heh then again I remember about two years ago some of my freinds got in trouble (I was lucky not to be around at the time) because win 98 (then installed on some computer labs at the school) had some terminal program (man I forget what it's called now) that we used as an instant messanger to talk to each other across the network. Well one of my freinds screwed up sending a message and broadcast it to the whole school by mistake. Heh, I remember the teachers freaking out about hackers and people going to break into the network for about a week before my freind fessed up.
Well there was a good ac post. Parent is right, speach does have consequences. Still I agree with the/. way of things, if you want credit for something put your name on it. I do think it's important to be able to post without anyone knowing who you are. The same way that you should be able to tip off the police, buy things at the store, and other legal things without having a tag attachted to you and someone tracking you.
I'm curious what industry you work in. Lol after you said that I googled myself and my freinds. It's intersting to find people online journals and things. It's scary to think that we leave a trail behind online.
You proablly meant that slightly less offensive than it came out but let me make the statement that, even though I hate many of his policies and appointments, GWB is not a new hitler. Hitler was a very smart man, he was nobody's puppet it. The things Hitler did were evil, but he was a gifted speaker and a briliant politican. King George II is neither of these. He at best is a good guy who made some terrible choices and at worst a puppet who's lost.
The ones who didn't deserve to get elected? Grant, Hoover, Adams, Buchanan, Johnson, and Harding all come to mind. As for those who did get elected, we're amazing presidents and would be crushed today? Jackson, Lincon, FDR, and Polk. But you are correct in your statement of this not being edvidence of it being broken. Still can I ask you this....do you honestly feel that the people we elect are the best for the job?
In this case you are correct about the canidates and the campaigns. But the parent to my orginal post said that the American system in and of itself was broke, my responce was a generalization of the system as a whole. As for the system not being broken for the past 200 years......well all I have to say is that I would argue that over time the two party system as degraded the electoral process. The vast majority of American presidents would not be able to get elected today. I'm not saying we should throw out the system competely, the point of the orginal post was that it's up to us to use it correctly.
That graphic you linked is misleading. With the exception of Russia, the other countries listed are much smaller than the US and they all have a dissimaliar set of laws. What's no legal in the US may be legal in Europe and vice versa. Not to mention this may just show that the US is tougher on crime or that crime is more reported, as the page notes.
It's not the system; it's the people who are using it. Both the politicians running it and the general public who buys into it. Here's a summary of what's wrong:
The media The media in the USA is insane. They're the single biggest lobby group in America today and not only that but they're also in the director's chair because they control what politician's get elected. Everyone should go look up a documentary called Orwell Rolls in his Grave. Now a day's, all the media is controlled by a few companies thanks to deregulation by the FCC. And they can use the media to say whatever they please, and put down the opinions of anyone who disagrees.
The politicians Basically all the politicians are rich white men. They got their wealth from inheritance. If they worked for it then they got some real lucky breaks. George Washington in his farewell address warned of political parties and named them one of three things that could break the American system. And guess what...they are. Right now there are two major political parties. It's impossible for two parties to accurately represent the broad spectrum of views held by millions of people. What more these two parties have near complete control so you're either part of them or you aren't a politician.
The people We're the ones who let this happen and what more most people voting don't vote based on issues. Those who do don't check their sources and are very poorly misinformed. It's almost exactly like Fahrenheit 451 (The Ray Bradbury book....so help me god if someone mentions Michael Moore) where people vote based on who looks best, without even listening to them.
End conclusion? If you want something to change do something about it, do it a little at a time, learn the facts, read your history books and be sure to watch your politicians closely.
:-) I meant that in a sort of joking way, I know that the market is far from "ripe for the picking". Personally I wish that weren't the case. But I do think it would be neat to see maybe some smaller computerized pinball machines, with lcd screens and small buttons on either side to use the paddles. You could set them on the coners of bars ect. I don't really plan on going into business:).
I can think of four acrades within driving distance of my house, one at each mall around here, one by itself downtown and another that's kind of an unoffical hangout...I guess it's a pizza place but every goes there to play video games. We have a pinball machine down at the bar too.
Maybe that was worded poorly, let me explain. I've used windows all my life and recently linux caught my eyes so I installed it to my second hard drive and on my old computer. I found it very easy to switch from windows to linux, the OS basicly handled the same way and I didn't have much trouble running any windows apps on linux. Not to say that there weren't problems at the start with networking ect. but once I got everything running it was easy switch back and forth.
Now my expirence with macs is this: 1) They're hard to take apart.
I've found that their hardware is incompatible with almost everything I have round. My school offers a unique chance. They hired me and two of my freinds under the supervision of our sys admin and net admin to take care of the computers and network at our schools over the summer. Four out of five of the school use brand new WinXP machines. We were surprised to find when we got to the elementary school that they were still using macs in the computer lab there (though the teachers computers all ran windows). When we took them apart to clean them out inside it was like a jigsaw puzzle, we had to remove, a side panel, unscrew a screen, and then another panel just to get inside of them. Once there I found that non of the hardware looked like what I expected it to. Now granted it wasn't a hard layout to understand and heck maybe it was even better than what I'm used to but I'm not sure if I got a mac and the sys crashed that I'd be able to take it apart and fix the problem.
2)Last I heard (I could be wrong) they aren't able to run software written for windows.
I could be wrong about this one (maybe something changed since the last time I checked) but I remember my freind getting a mac computer and being very annoyed that he had to buy all new software because all the apps he had didn't run on the machine.
That's all I meant by compatiblity, I'm sure it would be equally annoying for a mac user to switch to windows but right now, unless I'm mistaken, none of the computer parts/applications I have sitting here would work on a mac machine.

Lol. In that regard you are indeed correct. But the complaint that we'll be too far away to correctly govern the coloney should still be a valid argument;-).
I'm willing to say it will lead to less cooperation....well maybe some at the start of things. I'm reminded of the age of exploration in the Americas. I think it will lead to some cooperation in the inital exploration phase, but once someone gets a coloney down or a mining facility up, it'll be no holds barred imperialism again.
Wow, you hit the nail on the head. But your point about letting them do the reascearch is a good but misleading one. While it's good to let them pour resources into development, that might lead to them surpassing us in the feild of space exploration and in turn could lead to us playing catch up. While we'd be able to benifite from the technology they develop, you have to remember that infastructor is very time consuming to get into place, so we'd better not sit back too far or we may find ourselves left in the dust.
Orginally posted by Guppy06: "Gee, but everybody on Slashdot already knows that manned space exploration just isn't worth it! Everything we could possibly want to do in space can be done by robots!"
Was that sarcasm? I hope so. There are very good things that could eventually come from manned exploration of space. It could lead to the eventual colonization of space which could be an escape from the whole hell's kitten affect. Not to mention that there are things the humans might be able to adapt if something goes wrong that robots can't. It's still risky and dangerous now but that's why it needs developed. Trust me, once China reachs the moon and starts putting coloneys up there the US will suddenly have an interst.
Or instead of educating them we could try to make out software more user freindly. I'm reminded of a recent Bill Gates quote [I know...boo hiss] explaining the thinking behind SP2 he said, "Most users don't need to know what a firewall is or how to use it, they just need to know that their computer is safe.". The same way that drivers don't need to understand the enginneering behind airbags, they just need them to work.
A good way to approach this topic is simply to add an 'advanced mode' to your programs that will switch the GUI over to a more complexe layout so that people don't have to worry about it. You don't need to tell them what a trojan is you just need to say, "Your computer is protected."
I always thought that the distinction was that nerds held actual book intelligence where geeks were just into star wars, LotR, star trek ect. without being smart.
In the mean time we can spread the word about what he's doing, not visit his site (I blocked it at our school) and say, "Thank you for the information, it's neat now I'm going to google the topic and find out about it".
oo Um I'm not sure about living double lives but if your online persona will affect your work...then yes. Otherwise, no.
