My wife works for EMC. Its a terrible company. I tell her all the time that EMC strives for mediocrity. Theyve screwed her over on pay since the day she started while we've watched her hiring manager hire all his/her unqualified buddies into support positions when they know as much about IT as my 90 year old grandmother. There's a reason everyone is abandoning ship for NetApp and Cloudera. If you're fresh out of school, EMC might be a good starting point. If you're working towards a career, look elsewhere.

  7. iPhones arent the only thing to survive craziness on What Has Your Phone Survived? · · Score: 1

I bought a Treo 600 when they first came out on Sprint MANY years ago. I was out with a friend of mine going down the Wekiwa River in Orlando and was using the phone to take pictures of gators, etc and email them as we were going down the river. I used the phone all day, took a ton of pictures, etc and everything was just peachy. As we were returning to dock the boat, we bumped into something and I fell down in the boat and the phone went overboard into about 5 feet of water. I dove in after it, had to dig around in the mud at the bottom of the river and retrieved the phone. Of course it was dead and I was not a happy camper.

Took it home, tossed it on the counter and went about my business. A few days later, you could kind of see the display trying to light up. A few more days and the phone booted and was completely operational. Sprint insurance ended up replacing it a few months later but it worked flawlessly up until that point.

  14. Re:Let the consumer decide... on Theaters Unhappy About Faster DVD Releases · · Score: 1

    I agree 100%.

If simultaneous releases were done, I would buy a LOT more DVDs than I do now. I rarely go to the movies.. only been like maybe twice in the last 2 years. The experience sucks and unless its something that really benefits from a huge screen and crazy sound system, I'd just as soon sit at home and watch it.

The flip side to that is that usually by the time a movie makes it to DVD, I've lost interest in it or forgotten about it completely. If I could buy it at the same time trailers were playing and it was being hyped, I would.

I also think, to a certain degree, it would help curb piracy because it would give people the opportunity to buy the DVD the same day as the release and eliminate the need for cam and telecine releases. On the other hand, it would also facilitate DVD releases the day after the film is released so again, tough call.

Personally, tho, I'd like to see simultaneous releases.

Thats probably true however I logged over 1200 miles skating last year without a crash and routinely skate distances of 20+ miles and sometimes up to 40-50 miles. Pads just aren't comfortable for me and you really won't find any hardcore marathon skaters wearing them for that reason. Pads are great for rec skaters but they just aren't practicle for long distances as they are hot, they rub and just aren't comfortable.

But yea.. having skin is a plus :)

  20. Could be great for inline skating, etc on Flexible Body Armor · · Score: 5, Insightful

I do a lot of inline skating and I can see where this stuff could be revolutionary for outdoor inlining, skateboarding, etc.

Personally, I don't wear pads because they're uncomfortable. I do wear a helmet and palm sliders, which are supposed to help keep your palms from getting skinned up in an actual fall by serving as a buffer between your palms and the asphalt. In theory, they work pretty good. When you fall going upwards of 30MPH, they aren't a lot of help. Once you hit the ground, even if you initially brace with your palms, momentum is pretty much going to send you wherever it wants.

Being able to wear a long sleeved shirt or pants made of this stuff to help protect the knees and elbows would be huge. I have a road rash spot on my elbow now from a fall last weekend. Granted I don't fall much.. that was the first time in over a year I've had a crash and it was a very minor crash but even still, I'd probably wear this stuff for safety if it was available and not terribly bulky. Most inliners who are serious wear skin suits or jerseys so substituting this stuff would pretty much have no downsides as long as, like I said, it wasn't too bulky.

On the flip side, most skateboarders want to look "extreme" so this stuff might not be a huge hit with them. I personally like my skin intact, however.

It can be. Usually they only have 2-3 people checking out in the front and if you get behind someone with a large order, you could be there quite a while. I also can see where this could really speed things up when you're trying to get an ipod on events like a "no tax" weekend. Last "no tax" weekend, I stood in line for 3 hours to buy a Mini. The guy behind me was after an Ipod, which was not elibible for "no tax" and had to wait the same amount of time.

Considering how much of the Apple store's sales are probably iPod versus PC and other components, I think it's a really good move.

Its not quite that easy. For example.. let's say you bought a Motorola m500 (Which I have and is a kickass player), yes, it does play protected wma's, however, because Rio went under (They designed the m500 for Motorola), the m500 will not support the new subscription based music services. So buying something today for sure doesn't mean it's going to work tomorrow. The solution, as has been mentioned here about a million times, is to, unfortunately buy CDs. But you're eventually going to end up with a DRM protected CD and either have to figure out a workaround or return the CD. I'm really hoping Sony gets slapped hard for this rootkit fiasco. Maybe it will make other labels considering this type of intrusive DRM rethink their strategy.
