  1. Re:ebay's fault on How to Win on Ebay: Snipe · · Score: 1

    I guess in my mind though, if I go to an auction, and I want the fancy jell-o mold, I say to myself it's worth no more than $50, when they start bidding, the I will only pay up to $50, no matter what other people go up to... If ANYTHING, I'd say that ebay's way is better (for the buyer) in that, if I'm the only one willing to spend more than $30 for a Jell-o mold, I'll end up getting it for $31, or whatever, and not my predefined $50 that I WOULD have been willing to spend.

    I don't have a problem with snipers... Part of my understanding of ebay now is that there WILL be snipers, so I'll either join them at the game, or I'll bid as high as I would ever care to spend on the item, and if it goes for more, it wasn't for me anyhow... I just don't have a problem with it, nor do I think ebay should be run like other auction houses.

  2. Re:ebay's fault on How to Win on Ebay: Snipe · · Score: 1

    Any (real) auction I've ever been to, they don't 'set' a minimum bid increment. They start out at lets say $100 and wait for someone to raise their hand... I have the choice of calling out $50, and if they decided to then start with my bid they can, but they do not have to. Then from their they go up by tens or twenties... untill the bidding gets slow, then they might drop down to fives... There's nothing set like that that I've ever seen... You just tell them when you want to go higher, or when you're done. Simple as that...

    (Granted, these are 'hick' auctions for cattle, tractors and plows... Maybe paintings and such are different, but it wouldn't make sence to me why they would be)

    This is very interesting to me, because when I was growing up - all my 'nerd' friends (myself included) DREAMED of having a dull life ... Not being picked on, not having to play sports to be "cool" and accepted... Having the white house with the white fence with 2.5 kids was the dream... Seem that things have changed I guess...?

    I've had WDs take huge dumps many times, I've never liked the preformance of the Maxtors I've run. However, the Seagates I've had have always preformed well, and the ONE seagate I did have die on me I set on a shelf and a few months later (this was a 130MB drive) I grabbed it to see if I could get some of the data off... It worked GREAT, I was still able to use the drive for another year. That is untill my friends started laughing at me because I was the only one that didn't have AT LEAST a 210MB drive...

    *sigh* those were the days.

    With most of slashdot out there making links between the republicans and the ceo, I think this hits the nail on the head. I'm sure that Wally O'Dell did support Bush... The problem with the conclusions being drawn here are;

    How many of you have seen your boss (or bosses boss) get down into the development of the product you're working on?

    So it seems logical to me it's a quality issue, and not a political one.

    As I tell all my relatives when talking about credit card purchases online. "I know there are a lot of young punks down at my local grocer that I end up giving my card to. They could do just as much damage." Isn't the same true for voting? Especially with the power of the 2 partys? Just place certain people within the building that will "tamper" with the votes... And then you can't point to one big company. I just don't see as big a problem with electronic voting because at least 1s and 0s aren't biased; it's the people running it that are.
