    I wish I could say you were wrong but I can't. Outside of the cross platform compadability issues with DX, it also has a lot more overhead than OpenGL, so DX games just run slower than their OpenGL counterparts. I'm glad DX is as good as it is, and then again I'm not, it genuinly make developers lives easier, yet it kills engine cross platforming.

I wont have any memory left to USE my computer by the time all the companies are done." Yeah if you're auto updating 5 different games at once, sure that's going to take up system resources. But what about going to download a patch. Hunting down the file, then creating a dummy account just so you can get it off fileplanet.com. The waste of my time resource is way more important to me than 20MB on my sytem with enough ram (256 minimum) to run Half-Life 2 in the first place. so I only get 236 MB to play with the horror! And again what Gabe was looking for was MS or Sony to realease a Steam like platform so all developers could use it, not for all developers to make their own version of Steam. That resolves the: "Epic wants 20 megs, EA wants 20 megs, Blizzard.............." you mentioned.

    The reason it's helpfull to developers is because it allows them to do more. I feel your frustration with reguads to PC patches, but MS/Sony/Nintendo isn't going to let a buggy game get released because they now have a Steam type system. The big 3 all have rigorus in house testing mechanisms that they use on games before they go gold. MS/Nintendo/Sony sit between the publisher, and consumer in the path of

    Developer-> Publisher-> MS/Nintendo/Sony Review->
    Developer-> Publisher-> MS/Nintendo/Sony Review->
    Release -> Consumer

    on the PC side it looks like this

    Developer -> Publisher -> Release -> Consumer

    The publisher generaly wants a release ASAP so they can make a quick buck off of the game they have been sinking money into for the last 18+ months. So games on the PC get released prematurely. Because of lack of platform QC. Somthing that will not happen just because there is a Steam type option for developers to publish through.

    The thing Valve is looking to do is to facilitate the ease with which smaller/independant developers can get their games to consumers by making it cheaper to do so. Steam also allows larger, and more established developers to release extra content, and get feedback on content useage. Somthing a "static disk" release doesn't offer.

    I understand and agree that Steam has had it's troubles, buy it's a very good idea, and it's coming along quite well. Everyone fears change. And Valve took a huge risk attempting to do what it has done with Steam, but it was an attempt to solve a big problem for developers, publishing software, and software feedback. No one else was adressing these problems and Valve took it uppon itself to tackle them. It isn't an easy ride, but I'm glad they're taking the risk.

    Gabe originaly worked for Microsoft, so I doubt it very much. It's not that he's in cohoots with MS though, it's probably that he still knows a lot of guys that work over there, and he can probably get a lot of help with development if he develops for MS(Direct X), as opposed for a more open platform. It all comes down to dollars and sense.

    I'm fairly sure that the reason the original Half-Life even had OpenGL render path was becase it was originaly in the Quake 2 engine it was based off of, and required little to no extra work to get it up and running. However once they sarted to add pixle shaders it was just easier to run straight through with DX only.

    That's not to say that I think they decided to ax Star Office Willie nilly, I'm just saying I've been very pleased with OO.o 2.

    I honestly believe that the key to MS's success is software pirates. Not that that this idea is new, but think of how many fewer people would buy Star Office, or download OO.o if they didn't have the option of obtaining MS Office for free? If their only option to get MS office was to spend the $150 for the lite version, or the $400 for the full. It always gets me upset when people have me set up their PC and ask me "Where's Office?" the idea being that MS Office just comes free with every computer. What's even more upsetting is when I explain to them that it's an extra $150 for MS or OO.o for free. I usualy get the:

    Well Tom, Dick, or Hary has a CD I'll just get it form them. OO.o isn't even an option, they would rather have nothing than try something new. I can understand the fear of change I suppose, but the illegal part bugs me.

    Office productivity software isn't like the OS you can switch the 2 apps for ~ 80% of the users, and they wouldn't notice a thing. We can only hope that in addition to making it illegal to play DVD's that you purchased legaly on your Linux PC, that MS, and Intel's DRM plans end software piracy. Then finaly the cost advantage in the SOHO market will tilt towards Open source, and truely free beer alternatives.

    Install Unreal Tournament on Linux, and then install it on Windows. Which one was more "friendly"?

    Now go install "Battlefield 2" on Linux, and then on Windows.

    Now go develop a game using the DirectX suite. Now go develop a game using Linux. Which platform is more "friendly" to develop on?

    Quote:
    "If the rumors that it will have Linux installed out of the box or freely be able to run it are true, that means a PS3 could easily serve as a computer. It wouldn't be a great one, but if it could handle Word Processing, email, and simple things like that, why would anyone need to buy a new Windows PC?"

    And this same exact idea couldn't apply to the original Xbox why?...

    I own one console, a PS2, and I wish it was a Gamecube. GTA is a game that bores me, what can I say? If I'm going to spend my free time on a couch in front of a TV it's going to be with my friends, and we'll probably be playing "Smash Brothers". Hell we play "Testris Dr. Mario", and "Warios Woods" on the Super NES more than the PS2.

    If your going to buy a piece of computing equipment to play games Console or otherwise get the one that lets you play the games you want to play. If Tux Racer floats your boat by all means just get Linux. If an endless stream of poorly crafted AI enemies are your cup of tea go play Doom 3 or GTA. If you like party games that are easy to pick up and fun to play I highly recommend Gamecube. If you like multiplayer FPS's get a Windows PC.

    "Battlefield 2" awesome game by the way, first time in years I was looking forward to going home and playing a video game. It also runs on fairly modest hardware. I'm running it on a stock emachines m6805 Laptop, and an 2200 Athlon XP with a Radeon 9550 the crappy one with the 64bit bus. I know EA a a huge evil corp, but I'll be damned if they didn't grab a good developer and publish a great game here... /plug
