That's not the reason it's in debt, but the incredible spending that they are doing, i.e. the Iraq war among others. The budget deficit was gone until Bush screwed it all up again. And it was under Reagan where the massive debt piled up.

I'm sure the country would be fine if someone kicked those asshole politicians in the head and they actually spent the money wisely, instead of on projects to enrich their friends.

Incredible... I remember back when the net was young, before all the commercialism, and to think the amount of money these guys made simply collecting and selling domain names.

I guess part of it is they probably were making a decent amount of money from the ad revenue as well.

Sure wish I thought of it :-( Not claiming that I could have done the same thing, but lots of things you think about, I never would have thought would have been so popular... like free web-mail - but that was before everyone and their grandmother had net access.

We had that "feature" several years ago in a product we developed at a prior employer. Heck, Windows trashcan almost does the same thing, although I guess the user can still see his data after he deletes it.

I imagine to many people who don't have any idea what the law is about (unfortunately that's quite a few) would just hear the name and think, "Oh, that must be a good thing" or "Senator X voted *against* the Patriot Act? Yes, you are correct. I should have phrased it differently. What I ment was those who stand to gain the most if software patents come to be. Or that those who want patents seem to be much more actively pursuing them then those who are against them. Those against them don't stand to get a huge amount of licensing income if patents do not come to be, but those who will get that license income really are pushing patents. But I could be wrong and that's just my impression.

  6. I knew this would happen... on EU Software Patent Law Moves Forward · · Score: 4, Interesting

I said it in the last Slashdot story about EU patents. And now it seems to be happening, again. These corporations will never give up. Sooner or later, the side with no profit motive gets tired and grows week, and the other side wins. The pro-patent people will just keep trying and trying and sooner or later get their way, I'm afraid.
These politicians are constantly pressured by the corporations, and that's all they hear. They are told its "good for business and the economy" and then they announce they support "A broad software agenda to increase jobs in the EU" and most people who know nothing about software patents think their government is doing a great job, instead of just selling out.
It really is time for a revolution...

Amen! I have been crying. Sometimes I even run into people who are ignornat of the history and think EJBs invented the whole idea of distributed objects. It drives me crazy. We had a project at work built with C++/CORBA. It was pretty mature and worked really well. There was another project built on EJBs and we were suppose to get the two products talking. At the first meeting, they had a whole slideshow showing why we should rewrite our stuff with EJBs, showing all the advantages and how you could have remote objects and other things "not possible in C++". We were laughing until we realized there are MANY people who believe that. After we explained to them that their EJBs are more or less CORBA, they looked at us funny and I don't think they really believed us. They figured since they had just discovered distributed objects, it must be new and we were some crazy people who did not understand the power of EJBs...

It's a shame. CORBA is really useful and I think very easy to work with. Granted, there are a few things to learn if you're using the C++ mapping, but if you take the time, it's actually pretty straightforward and consistent.

It seems whenever something is at the point where it is mature and works well, it is thrown out and some new thing is invented to replace it - and they end up re-inventing the wheel many times - usually with less then spectacular results.

In both cases, the rice is seasoned with vinegar and sugar. See http://www.rain.org/~hutch/rice.html for sushi rice info.

There is nothing wrong with this, women are better then men are certain things. John Stossel once had a TV special explaining this basically saying that "C'mon, its OK to admit we are different.
