Frankly, it wasn't hard to outperform someone whose only experience was with selling soft drinks. Who the hell thought that marketing computers was exactly the same as marketing Coke?!? Anybody with experience in consumer electronics and computers should be able to do better than John Sculley.
As much as I think it's all a bit ridiculous, there's a part of me that wonders why someone would reproduce an *entire* article verbatim (if that is indeed what they have done).
Given that the Porn market is generally the driving force behind the adoption of any new computer technology, I shudder to imagine just what the first applications for this will be... I assume they already have the "sushi" smell developed...
I had to wait for his wife to get off work and come pick up their little girl. Either the dad has no transportation, or he's just not that involved in his child's life.
The operative phrase here is "once in a while". If you are playing games to the extent that is impacting the time you should be spending working on your problems, you are being self-destructive. Case in point: My daughter had a friend over for a sleepover this weekend. When she saw me playing a game, she said "My daddy is a level 82 in Worlds of Warcraft", to which I replied, "Anybody that is level 82 is spending way too much time online!" After that, she related "My daddy doesn't work; he just stays home all the time while my mommy works." Dude -- perhaps you should be putting some of that time and energy into FINDING A NEW JOB!
Yes, young programmers fresh out of school can work 10 hour days. However, after a couple months of this it begins to take a toll, manifesting itself as illness. Also, I had a general rule of thumb that anything more than 12 hours in a single day is non-productive; the mistakes made after 12 hours outweigh any potential improvements made. In short, 10 or 11 hour days done in a sprint to meet a deadline is a valid business strategy; planning on working everyone 60 to 80 hour weeks for a whole year is not. While most programmers are capable of working 80 hour weeks for short bursts, these should be the exception, not the rule.
Most $600 laptops can be had for about $350 these days...
Seriously, I just bought a full-featured (except for no built-in webcam) AMD-based Toshiba notebook for Christmas for my sister-in-law at Fry's for $340. Similar ones are now $400 at Office Depot.
My back-of-envelope calculations showed there was about a 10% premium for buying Apple laptops compared to a comparably featured Dell. Apple products have better user interface, but are really not any more reliable. However, the difference comes when you have problems with the hardware; Apple customer service is much more responsive and generous about fixing problems. For iPods, however, you're paying twice as much for a slightly better user interface than the many off-brand MP3 players. For iPhones, they are about dead even with Android phones in terms of price/performance. Traditionally the iPhone software has been better, but with Android 2.2 and 2.3, Android phones are finally catching up..
You've got to give the Canadians credit for one thing: they pronounce the words exactly as they spell them; as different from the Americans as is possible!
Black holes by definition have no EM emissions from inside the event horizon. The energy emitted by black holes comes from gas being accelerated outside the event horizon, so a black hole without any surrounding cloud of matter would be much harder to detect. One could only judge it's position by it's effect on light/radio waves coming from behind it.
Diamond ranks high on hardness, not strength (diamond used to be high point of hardness scale, but I think they have since discovered harder substances) What we usually refer to as strength is tensile strength, the point at which it breaks when you try to stretch it. Spider webs have a very high tensile strength for their cross sectional area. You "walk though them all the time" because the strands have a very small cross sectional area -- you could also walk through strands of steel of the same diameter. So all they are saying is that a strand of this new "glass" will withstand greater force than a strand of steel of the same diameter.
You are correct. I was trying to say that dark matter would be distinguishable from a supermassive black hole. But it would still be difficult to tell the difference between dark matter and a large group of small black holes. I too am unclear why the phenomena attributed to "dark matter" could not be adequately explained by a large number of small black holes.
I don't know when they'll do a movie about Loughner, but when they do, I'm certain they'll get Nicholas Cage to play him... nobody does batshit crazy like Nicholas Cage!
A black hole would occlude light from behind it, making it detectable by a circular absense of light as it travels across the sky. Apparently a blob of "dark matter" either does not absorb light or has such a small diameter that it does not detectably occlude light. But if the dark matter was a point source of gravity, wouldn't we still see some gravitational lensing? It appears dark matter would have to be much less dense than a black hole. But then, I'm not astrophysicist.

Because the original article got slashdotted?

Unlike the Pope, Bill Gates has never been a member of the Nazi Youth Movement.
Somebody has finally explained the runaway popularity of GORILLAS.BAS !!!

Note to self: buy stock in Kleenex corp.
Well then, I must really give a hand to our friends North of the border! (Just one hand, mind you, the other one is busy...)

Does this solution scale up well enough to meet the enormous storage and bandwidth demands of porn?
Yeah, that server downtime in November was a bitch!

Actually the Templar Cross was slightly different.
Apparently most geeks, unlike most Greeks, are unfamiliar with who Cassandra was...
Wait... do you mean to say that bathrooms don't cause masturbation?
I see... got teabagged by a ten year old again?
If you still have a wife, you're not spending enough time online!
