Unfortunately, it can enter the conversation. Standards should be free, open, and unencumbered to allow for rapid adoption. That doesn't mean they always are. For example, Microsoft, simply because of it's size, can drive a non-open standard into widespread adoption (this isn't always a bad thing.)

Here in the states, the BBC World News is by far the most objective and balanced reporting available. They even do a good job of covering US politics, whereas the US based news organizations appear to assume their listeners want to remain blissfully ignorant to what is going on in the rest of the world. Hell, even Al Jazeera has better journalism standards than most US News organizations. Is James Murdoch any relation to Rupert Murdoch? They both appear to have a business model based on whining that their customers aren't paying enough for their product.

Hmm... they currently have the technology to implant a pump that keeps the insulin levels in your bloodstream at a steady level... it shouldn't be too hard to adapt this technology to other substances. My alcoholic girlfriend was actually highly functional with a constant level of alcohol in her bloodstream... it wasn't until she got jaundice and wound up in the hospital, where they cut off her alcohol supply, that she started experiencing DTs and hallucinating. Likewise, I believe heroin addicts function fairly well with a constant level of the drug in their system... you may be on to something here! At least until the pump, your liver, or your kidneys fail, it might be fun.

Better yet, how about a chip to constantly measure the levels of alcohol, THC, and narcotics in their children's bloodstream. I'm pretty sure we have the technology to do this now... first they'll mandate it for parolees, then parents will insist on it for their minor children, pretty soon anybody that doesn't have one will be considered a Unabomber-like Luddite. On the bright side, geeks will pretty quickly hack a remote reader for these chips, so they'll know exactly which girls to attempt to pick up at parties...

The flip side of the coin of freedom of expression is having the wisdom to know when expressing yourself serves no constructive purpose, but only increases someone else's frustration.

The Mormons also abandoned their racism. They have the worlds largest collection of genological data, and I strongly suspect their recantation of their ideas about "mud people" occurred about the same time they did enough research to discover that the majority of their members actually had African ancestors. Sure, the Mormon Church has done some bad things in their past, but nothing that comes close to, say, the Inquisition, or even the arrest of Galileo as a heretic. And of late, they have been trying to distance themselves from that past and establish themselves as mainstream. For the most part, the Mormons I have know personally, including two families of next-door neighbors, have been some of the nicest, most helpful people I have ever known. The only stereotypes they truly deserve is 1) They are intensely devoted to their families (that's a good thing!) and 2) they really suck at partying.

Sigh... since bronze is 90% copper, I doubt if any sane person worried about the adaptation of bronze tools putting the copper industry out of business! We do, however, have documented evidence that people have been complaining about how terrible "today's youth" are for over 3000 years! Apparently selective amnesia is fairly common in our species; people simply cannot accurately remember what is was like to be young themselves. There probably are short-term affects on attitude from playing violent games or watching violent movies, just like there probably are short-term affects on driving judgment after long sessions of playing driving games or watching The Fast and the Furious. That doesn't necessarily translate into long-term affects, or justify banning something. The Bible contains horrific depictions of violence -- homosexual rape, incest, murder, adultery, etc. We have lots of documented evidence of nut jobs using The Bible to justify antisocial and even unlawful behavior. And yet, nobody seriously proposes banning The Bible because it leads to violence... why not? Fairy tales are violent. Nursery rhymes are violent. Even Sesame Street contains depictions of addictive behavior, albeit by a large, blue, furry, googly-eyed monster. Where do you draw the line?

Have they proven that "violent video games make more aggressive, less caring kids", or that "more aggressive, less caring kids make better violent video game players"? Also, a change in attitudes measured immediately after playing a game does not prove a long-term affect; my daughter acts very differently after viewing the movie "Lilo and Stitch" too... does this mean Disney should be banned?
