And the bird likely wasn't free either. But it's cost was pigeon feed compared to the cost of getting a Telekom line installed. Also, pigeon breeders don't have to bribe the government communications workers to ensure continued service. (I'm told you have to do this in India, I'm not sure about SA.) At any rate, one should not be surprised when a government licensed monopoly provides poor service.

No argument from me there. The point I was trying to make is that the Russians wouldn't have any problem whatsoever screwing over their German neighbors -- in fact, they would probably laugh while they were shutting off the valves. On the other hand, it is a two-edged sword, and Russia needs the foreign currency these natural gas exports provide, so I don't see them turning it off long term, just long enough to jack up the price.

Seriously, I find it difficult to believe that they can generate power with a home natural gas generator for less cost than they can buy it from the electric company.

If you had a hydrogen economy, excess power wouldn't be a problem. As someone else suggested, you could divert all the excess power into cracking H20 into hydrogen and oxygen, store it, and use it instead of fossil fuel to power automobiles and/or to run hydrogen power plants in times of peak demand. That would certainly be a lot better for the environment (at least in terms of C02 production) then these frickin' natural gas generators.

As far as using more natural gas driving up the cost of nitrate in fertilizer, doesn't a huge amount of natural gas just get wasted in the production and refining of oil anyway? The El Segundo refinery always had a huge flame coming out the end of a tower, which I assumed was burning off natural gas and other by-products of oil refining, because wasn't economically profitable to capture it.

Linksys is owned by Cisco. Linksys makes devices that do most of what the Cisco boxes do at a fraction of the cost. If they were to switch the Cisco routers to Linux, they would effectively be telling their customers "there is no benefit to buying our high-end boxes over a Linksys router". Actually, the reason they are sticking with IOS is that people have payed and continue to pay thousands of dollars to get Cisco CCNA certification. Switching to Linux would render all that training obsolete, and mean that anybody could now administer a Cisco router, instead of just highly trained professionals like Terry Childs. So, while there would be no downside for their customers if Cisco switched all their products to Linux, there would be a huge downside for Cisco's bottom line. After all, what's more important: the short term profits of your company, or the long term best interests of your customers?

Michael Richards was never arrested for his bad judgement because it is not unlawful to call someone a "nigger". That still doesn't make it a good idea to do so. In a way I agree with you, "hate crimes" should be evaluated as crimes regardless of whether or not prejudice was involved. Killing someone isn't really made worse because you hate members of their ethnic group. However, racial intimidation IS made worse by a history of violence against that group. So, a gesture like hanging a noose in a tree, which in and of itself should not be a crime, does become a crime when it is done in a context of racial tension, because it carries with it the implicit threat of violence. As long as your statements would not be interpreted by a reasonable person and carrying a threat of violence, you are in fact legally entitled to use words with bad connotations in the US. A black calling another black "nigger" is different than a white calling a black "nigger" because blacks don't have a history of lynching other blacks for their skin color. (Ethnic heritage and religion, yes, but not skin color.) As long as your remarks are not interpreted as threatening or coercive by those hearing them, you are free to say whatever you want. Do members of what you refer to as "protected classes" frequently misinterpret words or actions a threatening? Yes, they do, and that is the only legitimate basis for your resentment. Both sides need to be reasonable and cut the other side some slack. Try not to say or do things that could be interpreted as threatening, and try to discern someone's real intent before reacting.

Or, they just wait until both participants clearly break some other laws and arrest both of them. Isn't that what they do or should do in all cases, regardless of the affiliation of the participants?
