Why does forbes suck up to msft all the time? Gee, I don't know... it couldn't possibly be because Microsoft spends a lot of money buying advertising in Forbes, could it?
They forgot the Apple III Computer Of course, this was an emminently forgetable computer anyway (only on the market for 4 months), so I can forgive them for forgetting.
But, if Linux were to really take off, don't you think Microsoft would start filing a bunch of infringement lawsuits against Linux (or other F-OSS), in the same way Eolas did to Microsoft? And OpenSource developers would respond by modifying the alledgedly infringing code as soon as it was pointed out to no longer infringe, much as Microsoft has done. And your point is? Clearly Microsoft is doing the right thing in this case, and still being criticized for it. I despise Microsoft as much as anyone, but in this specific case we need to give the devil his due.
Most addictions are to do with internal emptiness, wanting to fill up dead space, and addiction is always destructive. Yep, that's the best explanation I've seen so far for why people read and post to slashdot!
You're missing the point -- it solves the OTP distribution problem, because once a specific quasar and time period is known, the OTP can be generated simultaneously by all participants. Of course, this would be possible with almost any astronomical source of random data, not just quasars. Once all the partipants know which quasar to use and how to use it, there is a virtually infinite source of OTP random bits.
The best thing a young IT worker can do to avoid being outsourced is re-train for a career in health-care. For some reason, nurses and pharmacists have a much harder time phoning their work in.
6 months seems like a long time to invent a multi-protocol router You've obviously never written network protocol stacks. While an extremely competent developer might be able to crank out an IP-only router in about 2 months, supporting TCP/IP, Netware and NetBIOS simultaneously would probably take me (with 25 years experience in networking software) at least 6 months of C coding to write one from scratch, and that's assuming all protocols were well documented and no reverse-engineering was required, which probably was NOT true at the time. So while developing a router in 6 months doesn't strike me as impossible, his accomplishment certainly puts him in the top 5% of coders out there.
So where do I find plain-text archive of all past and currently pending bills in congress? Gee, I don't know... have you tried reading the Congressional Record? Of course, if you do, you better be a fast reader... I hear it increases by about 4000 pages each day!
you're not particularly excited about your fiance I don't know about you, but for most of us, even the worst fiance is more enjoyable than the best RPG... although I do wish there was a more accurate way of tracking my XP in dealing with my fiance...
Gender?!? Why does anybody not intending to have sex with you have a need to know your gender? And what is the procedure for updating this information if it should change?
customers of those services need to be made aware of what their provider is doing Absolutely right! I say we send each and every one of those customers an email.... d'oh!
But seriously, how to propose making AOL users aware of anything? Doesn't the very fact that they are AOL users imply they're not paying attention?
I can't understand why he is "best known for Solaris" when it is far from his best work. "The Cyberiad", for example, was a collection of much better stories. Lem had an understanding of people, politics, and satire that made almost everything he wrote delightful to read. Plus, I could never beleive The Cyberiad was originally written in Polish then translated, so props go out to his translators also.
Breaking compatibility with M$ products would be counter-productive. Customers need a simple, easy to understand migration path to slowly wean them off of Microsoft dependency. In my humble opinion, Samba is one of the best things to come out of Open Source; it not only allows Linux systems to play nicely with existing Windows installations, it actually makes a faster SMB server than the Windows servers themselves do! Fortunately most developers do live in the real world, where Windows compatibility is taken as a given. I sincerely hope Open Source developers will never lower themselves to Microsoft's level and intentionally break interoperability.
I've thought that Ballmer should have been tossed out ever since he claimed Microsoft stock is overvalued As CEO, he has a fiduciary responsibility to increase shareholder value, not lower it. Why there wasn't a shareholder revolt at the first hint of a CEO running down his own companies stock is beyond me... maybe he has pictures of Bill Gates and Paul Allen in compromising positions.
There are lots of bright, talented designers and developers at Microsoft. Granted, most of the ones in higher management vested their stock options and cashed out long ago (which may partially explain their current inability to ship product on time). Personally, I feel that if they would just let the engineers design a product to meet customers needs instead of having marketing design a product to maximize customer lock-in, they could still come out with some really cool software. Freeing the application developers to write software for non-MS platforms could even improve profitability. But yes, I beleive their current management is acting as an impediment to innovation, rather than encouraging it.
I really do actually remember when SCO... were the good guys I don't. The old SCO were a bunch of arrogant assholes, run by a president who couldn't keep himself from slobbering all over his female employees. The SCOG had to try really, really hard to be even more sleazy than the old SCO... but they succeeded.
Therefore, I figure that Microsoft's monopoly position can only be threatened if one of their next new operating systems turns out to be a total failure. Not really. If the costs to businesses of retraining all their users to use Vista exceeds the costs to businesses of retraining all their users to use Linux, then Microsoft's monopoly position would be threatened. The secret to unseating MS then, is to create a Window manager that is indistiguisable from XP, as well as apps that provide ALL the functionality Windows users are used to having... e.g. solataire, minesweeper, notepad...
In exactly the same way that Michael Jackson feels like a kid again!
For the next 24 hours slashdot is completely worthless. Exactly how is this distinguishable from its value the other 364 days of the year?
WHY is our readership so skewed? Because they've been getting skewed by Microsoft for years?
I beleive "loving ponies" is still a crime in all 50 states... better make sure you don't get caught!

I think you mispelled "robber".
You take an tenth-generation analog copy, I'll take a tenth-generation digital copy, and then we'll see which one looks and sounds better...
Gender?!? Why does anybody not intending to have sex with you have a need to know your gender? And what is the procedure for updating this information if it should change?

If that's true, then the VCs must be jumping all over this product!
