The Samsung Uproar came out before the iPod and combined cell phone and MP3 functionality. If it didn't sell then, what makes Gates think it will sell now? Combining everything into one device just gives you a single point of failure. I'd prefer a cell phone that will always reliably make phone calls, thank you very much! Not one where the battery will go dead from listening to music all day, causing me to miss the call with a new job offer...
The Samsung Uproar was a converged cell phone and mp3 player that came out about 5 years ago. Apparently it didn't sell well, and I no longer use mine. The only advantage is that it allows you to use the same headphones for both functions.
Why don't you get back to us after you've successfully launched and sold a successful startup? Until then, I'm simply going to disregard all your assurances of how easy it is as just so much bullshit. Or, to quote the old adage, if you're so smart, how come you're not rich already?
1) He says barriers to entry of startups is low. Wrong. Barriers to entry of web services is low; most other startups still require huge infusions of capital, e.g. anybody that wants to do actual manufacturing or sell actual hardware. Are web based startups different from hardware manufacturing startups? Absolutely.
2) Low barriers to entry also means there is going to be hundreds of other "undergrads" trying to sell the same idea. This means your chances of eventual payback are much smaller!
3) Why should bigger companies buy startups when they can just partner with them or outsource company services to them?
4) Yeah, starting a web based startup doesn't cost significantly more than just being a slacker. But if you haven't noticed, 99% of us can't afford to just set around and be a slacker either! SOMEBODY has got to be paying your food and rent. Apparently Mr. Graham thinks most students graduate with tens of thousands of dollars in the bank and can afford to not have any income for several years. I've got about $130,000 in student loans that say otherwise...
Equip each robot with a gun, then program it to point the gun at it's assembler and demand that they make another copy... now there is an effective self-replicating robot!
Replicating itself twice out of what? Ice? And why does the robot itself have to return, when all you really want is the payload? Hell, have it stay there and continue to mine ice, using a railgun to shoot it at Mars, and letting ballistics do the rest... of course, this will make living on Mars quite interesting until these self-replicating robots run out of ammo!
If all you want is a laptop with a big screen to carry between work and home (and with a screen this big, you're gonna need to plug it in), why not just get a much smaller laptop with 2 separate 19" LCD displays for work and home? Docking and undocking laptops really isn't that much work...
At what point does putting a larger LCD in a portable stop making sense and just putting a projector (e.g. DLP) in the portable start making sense? Seriously, if you want a large display, just carry around a roll-up movie screen! Plus in airplanes you could just project onto the seatback in front of you...
Much smaller, lighter notebook. Ok, power consumption of projector would suck.
I disagree. Purchaser should have right to make backup copies of any purchased media, right to loan out the original copy, and right to resell the original copy provided all backup copies are destroyed (yeah, that is unenforcable). Purchaser should NOT have the right to redistribute unlimited free copies! And by the way, "I'll give you a free copy of my movie if you will give me a free copy of yours" is redistribution for profit...
I'd also require that two copies of every work to be copyrighted be provided free of charge to a national archive Cool! Then I could just peruse the national archive instead of subscribing to "Penthouse" and "Juggs"!
But seriously, do you have any idea how large a warehouse it would take to house a copy of every copyrighted publication?
"Single point of failure." I for one don't want to be unable to make or receive calls just because my PDA gets a virus or otherwise decides to act up. Think it doesn't happen? It happenned to Chad Dickerson No, I think all-in-one is a very BAD idea.
Uh, if they ever shipped an OS that worked perfectly, then they couldn't get you to pay for an upgrade by telling you how much the previous release sucked, now could they? You need to stop thinking like a customer and start thinking like a marketer...
More like sacking that creepy Burger King who keeps showing up in your bed, outside your window, etc. Man, I'd get a restraining order if somebody started doing that to me!
So, if Moron O'Gara wrote an opinion piece advocating shooting the president, would sacking her still be censorship? I'm sorry, but publishing personal attacks on people and incitement to harrassment constitutes a HUGE liability for a company, and I'm sure Sys-Con's lawyers would have advised them to sever all ties.
There is a big difference between anti-Linux opinions and personal attacks. Personal attacks can get you sued; getting rid of somebody that is very likely to involve your company in expensive litigation is only smart business. PJ can sue, write up her own documents, and not even pay filing fees since she has no income. However, any company she sues faces thosands in legal fees just to file a response, and if they file a response, they automatically lose. Sacking Moron O'Gara is just good risk management, not censorship.
This wasn't an "opinion", this was a blatant personal attack and harrassment. If Moron O'Gara had just said "PJ sucks!" she would be ok. When you start publishing names, addresses, and phone numbers of somebody and all their relatives, that crosses the line from free speech to threatening speech -- which is not protected by the First Ammendment.
Which only makes it seem much more like SCO had a hand in this. Darl McBride's personal info is published on the web and he receives harrassment (and probably insults to his Mormon faith), so he decides "it's payback time!" Problem is, there is no Linux CEO so he decides to go after PJ and do the same thing to her... but of course, PJ isn't responsible for Darl's problems, and only a truly warped mind would deem this "revenge" appropriate.
From Maureen O'Gara's own words, it sounds like she has been stalking PJ, and I don't think being a journalist makes that ok. I also don't think it is ok to publish the address of someone who has already received death threats, and of all their relatives. (Funny, when PJ complains about harrasment, she is called "paranoid", but when Darl McBride complains about harrassment, he is just standing up for his rights!). I think it is high time for Pamela Jones to get a restraining order against this unbalanced woman who by her own words obviously has a vendetta against her.
But will it run on a 386? Yes, if you can afford to wait several minutes for it to update the cursor every time you move the mouse...

Mineral oil?!? I'll bet all his fish are dead!
Yes.

Doesn't this violate the Etch-a-Sketch design patent?
Imagine the great mileage you could get if you always drove 10mph on the freeway!

Yeah, push email will be just great when somebody mail-bombs you with more email than you have memory in your PDA to store...

You mean, I should stop referring to Linux as "the Windows killer"?!?
