I suspect the soldiers doing covert ops on foot don't carry as many gadgets, and probably keep what they do carry turned off most of the time. Anybody else is putting out a huge infrared, sound, and electromagnetic signature from their vehicle anyway...

    Where cultural taboos dictate the covering of ankles, naked ankles are considered erotic. Likewise, it is only our cultural taboos against topless women that make breast appeal to our prurient interests. Hang out around nursing mothers for any length of time, and you'll see breasts popping out all over the place... and lets face it, they're just not that interesting!

    Since my daily commute is 50 miles each way (was recently 80 miles each way) and my name isn't "Lance Armstrong", I think I'll pass, thank you very much... consider yourself very lucky if you live within walking distance of work. Plus, even if I worked at home, I would still have to drive my daughter to school every morning...

    If you're ANYWHERE, wear a helmet. And assume those big SUV drivers don't see you 'cause their too busy talking on their cell phones to watch for bicycles or pedestrians, and more often then not, you'll be right! And if you ride anytime near dawn or dusk, get the brightest damn blinking light you can find, otherwise I won't be able to see you when I cruise by in my hybrid.

    Can't we get reasonably accurate climate data going back thosands of years by examining polar ice cores? Granted, this only reflects climate at the poles, but we should be able to get cores from other glaciers as well. (And granted, these don't directly tell you tempurature)

    The hardware will run other software (Linux, BSD, and Solaris) and any Freshman business student can explain to you the principle of "sunk costs": it doesn't matter how much you've already spent on something, if you can get a better return by throwing it out and replacing it, then you throw it out and replace it!

    No, the real reasons are 1) Everybody is already trained to use the Micrsoft software. Retraining them is expensive -- upwards of $2000 per person and 2) Managers don't get to be managers by admitting they made mistakes -- ever! If you were a company executive, would you admit that all that software you advised the company to buy a few years back was a steaming pile of manure? No, you apply whatever bandaid fixes you could and hope nobody notices. So far, Microsoft has done a good enough job of supplying bandaids that nobody notices they are bleeding to death...

    The world knows Microsoft's security record. Apparently not, since much of the world is still using Microsoft's software! Sorry, but slashdot geeks are not a representive sample of the world at large!

    The study was comparing RedHat vs. Windows 2003 servers, not desktops. Most of Windows security holes have to do with the naive design of IE, Office, and Outlook. The Microsoft web services, on the other hand, were probably mostly copied from BSD, and thus fare much better in the security department.

    As a moral issue, I think you should tell them ahead of time that their internet use is being tracked. What you want is to discourage them from going to potentially harmful sites in the first place, not catch them by suprise and punish them after the fact!

    I would have to guess that Longhorn is going to be an even bigger But, if Linux provides better backwards compatibility with old Microsoft Apps so that users don't have to buy their apps all over again for Longhorn, doesn't that take away a major incentive to stick with a Microsoft OS? Seems to me Microsoft is shooting themselves in the foot if they abandon backwards compatibility with DOS... especially if they also abandon issuing security updates for old verions of Windows.

    Yes, but 14 billion years is considerably longer than your supply of b-b's is going to last... in fact, I would speculate that if you shot b-b's into the air for several billion years, you would be virtually guaranteed to put some eyes out! Yes, the odds against a bacteria making it from one planet to another and surviving the trip are astronomical, but remember, the moon is covered with the results of astronomical odds...

    Here's a thought: suppose life originated inside a large asteroid somewhere, then later when the asteroid broke up both earth and mars were seeded with descendants of that original extra-terrestrial bacteria? We've already proven that chemical-based bacteria can survive deep within rocks...

    Every MMO launched to date has a single-shot CD-key used to create an account. Well, no. RuneScape has no single shot key, because it is written entirely in Java and distributed entirely over the internet. And you can create as many accounts as you want -- for free! However, accessing the more interesting areas requires a $5/month subscription fee. (And for those of you who are wondering -- yes, Java 3D graphics suck!)

    They are charging a monthly fee. They should be distributing the software (with regular updates) for free over the 'net! Let's face it... anybody that wants to play the game already has an internet connection! Why do they insist on treating a what should be a subscription service like it was still shrinkwrapped software?
