Hey, here's an idea: maybe if everybody simply stopped paying attention to them, then entertainers would stop spouting off their political ideas every chance they get? Think we could simply convince people to stop buying the crap they're selling? Nah... not a chance!

    Actually, no... I beleive the average salary is about $500... but in essence you are correct; when you don't know where your next meal is coming from, buying a $100 computer is pretty far from your mind.

    If you RTFM, it says these computers are designed to be sold to governments, not to individuals. These will be used to make the governments more efficient (and hopefully a little less corrupt.) It we're lucky, some may even be placed in libraries and community centers.

    Giving computers to poor people is just like giving laptops to 8 year old students... you just know it's going to get lost or stolen!

    North Korea is a case in point. Rice is a luxury there! Meat is unheard of! But dang it, they've got nuclear weapons! To protect them from what? At this point, getting taken over by almost any other country out there would be a net gain for the North Korean civilians!

    Somebody that would divorce Cher is exactly the type of loser I would expect to... uh, run into a tree while skiing! But that's not the "Bono" we were talking about! I don't expect advice from Milton Friedman on 3 part harmony, why the hell would I want advice from Bono on economics? (Bill Gates, on the other hand, actually does appear to have a very good grasp of economics. Too bad he doesn't have an equally good understanding of computer security and reliability!)

    As somebody that has been programing for 25 years, all I can say with regard to this article is "Well, duh! Tell me something I don't already know!" Seriously, if you've been programming for more than 3 years and haven't already figured out by yourself (and by bad example) how to write understandable code, maybe you shouldn't be programming!

    Actually, Republicans are rather hypocritical about freedom. Basic tenets of the Republican party include personal responsibility and freedom from government intervention... EXCEPT when it comes to forcing everyone else to adhere to their views about abortion, gay marriage, drugs, pornography, etc.

    Likewise, Democrats also beleive in personal liberties and "the right to choose"... EXCEPT when it comes to the right to self defense, the right to choose which schools your children go to, or the right to choose how you spend your own money rather than the government making that decision for you, etc.

    Has John Dvorak ever been right about anything, ever? Remember, this is the same guy that predicted OS/2 would triumph over Windows... I only wish I had his job, so that I could get paid for making assine predictions all the time! Right now I'm basically making assine predictions for free, but at least they turn out correct much more often than Dvorak's...

    Didn't Tianamen demonstrate that there are a large number of people in China that really want to be free? Can you name any group of people that are currently telling their government "excuse us, but we'd like a little less freedom, please"? While getting people to understand the concept of freedom may require some education, I don't really beleive there are too many people out there that are opposed to freedom.

    This, of course, means you use the word "freedom" as defined in the dictionary; when Bush uses the word "freedom", he appears to be assigning a somewhat different meaning to the word...

    Exactly. That $499 mac mini is actually around $1200 by the time you get it set up to do actually work (add 802.11, bluetooth, RAM, 80GByte Hard Drive, decent LCD monitor). I'm pretty sure I can get a comparable PC from Dell for around half that price... heck, I can get a laptop from Dell for $700.

    Slightly inaccurate. The average user wants whatever they are accustomed to using; forcing 60,000 keyboard-pounders to learn a new user shell IS a difficult, expensive task. The only long-term solution is to make sure users get trained on KDE and/or Gnome first!

    Oops! My 3-year old is already reasonably proficient in Windows98! Unfortunately, thats what all of her game and educational software is written for... has anybody succeeded in getting "Barbie's Horse Adventure" running in Wine? ;-)

    users may experience problems running IBM's internal Web applications. Most of those applications are written for the Internet Explorer browser, which has not been ported to Linux. Internet Explorer is the only browser supported by IBM's internal support desk, according to another IBMer.

    Like most large corporations, they were short sighted enough to fall for M$ lock-in, and wrote their web apps to Microsoft Standards(TM) instead of Internet Standards...
