    What would it have taken them to run on the ground with the computer set to December 31st and see what happens?

    HAL would think the mission was over and try and a runway landing from top of the launch pad. As someone else here has already pointed out you count the time in integers from a base year eg Feb 08 1828 and count up.

    Why not create a image server and config the client to install at boot if it finds the server. At the switch plug the clients cable into the image server. When the client boots it automatically installs then switch it back to the network. Put all updates in automated scripts set them to run at 2.00am and barring hardware failures you can spend the day playing CS or trolling slashdot.

    A multi-national I once worked for never actually used AD. They had Win2k servers in a number of locations using Exchange server and mapped shared drives to the desktop. A twelve man It department did nothing all day but reinstall email accounts that had borked for no reason. Two cat5 sockets on every workplace, one for the Internet and one permanently connected to a ghost server for the never ending reinstalls.

    If Linux didn't innovate then why does MS see the need to blackmail people into not using it. What if anything did MS ever innovate. Active Directory an implementation of LDAP directory services, does nothing that Novell eDirectory can't do. And security and Windows don't belong in the same sentence. Who really innovated the Zune/iPod, Aero/Mac OS Aqua, Vista/OSX 10.4, dot.net/Java.

    Did they really win. The EU commisioner told MS to publish the protocols and unbundle certain applications. MS has done neither buts pleads 'confusion' over what the ruling really means.

    As far as I am aware MS have not done so. Has the commision recinded its ruling. If not Microsofts lawyers must be aware of this. Or are they going to stall the process long enough to manufacture a new set of protocols, release a new version of Vista using these protocols and make sure it's incompatible with the old 'opened up' protocols.

    By doing such deals Novell are in some sense giving validity to MS claims. Conversely while MS continues to make threatening noises and not acting on them they can be accused of harassment through false threats of litigation. If MS really believes they have a case then why up to now have they not acted on it.

    I would advise the other companies to not take up the offer. If they subsequently end up in court they can produce the MS/Novell deal as evidence of the baseless MS claim. That agreement in no way confers any rights to Open Source to Microsoft. That they make no such explicit claim is cogent in the extreme.

    A smart guy at MS never did come up with the solution it's been around on other systems at least five years before Vista and it isn't totally secure. Software can never provide total security. Such protections belong in hardware, in the memory management unit.

    What version? Why are you running both desktops. As an IT services company what exactly is difficult about the 'Linux' Gui?

    What compels you to upgrade? As a professional IT shop I would imagine you set your own upgrade agenda. Why do you install the 'old' version on new hardware when as you say, there is a newer upgrade available. What kind of a shop are you running there?

    According to this MS sponcered report from 2002 it takes three people to support a Linux server and two for Windows. Anyone who know anything about Unix knows this to be absolute nonsence. An average ISP need hire at most two Linux sys admins regardless of the number of machines. Once some automated scripts are in place baring a hardware failure, there is minimal maintenence.

    In trouble but not exactly huge. The stock was much lower in mid 2003. The problem stems from their failure to file its 10-Q form with the SCO. The delay being caused by the alleged backdating of stock-options. A practice that seems to be common as over over one hundred businesses are being investigated for same. One of their creditors has declared this as reasons for defaulting. They do actually have enough cash to pay off the loan but it would put a severe dent in their cash flow.

    You may be very true there. I see a pattern here. 'Partner' with Apple, Sun, Novell etc. The net effect is to neutralize them and protect the core.

    Depends how the fine print and how Novell plays it. This agreement *is* designed to run interference on Novell and deny them access to new markets. A pretty smart move on behalf of MS. It will be interesting seeing if Novell brought a long spoon to the negotiating table. I agree with the rest of your analysis.

    Yes to the first and yes to the second only it is MS that is in court with the EU commision for not opening up the protocols. They provided API calls instead. It has been explicidly stated by a MS execitive that the purpose of MS protocols is prevent entry into the market of OSS projects. You can't be any cleared then that.

    By that logic spam is cause by IPV4. No, the real casue of spam is all those compromised Windows machines out there. How about making an OS that cannot be so easily be co-opted into a spambot network. How about the chief facilator of these spambots imdemnifying companies against getting spammed or hacked. Now that would be really innovative.

    DNS name publication requires updates to DNS servers. Most people must contact a server administrator. This takes time and incurs costs. PNRP name publication is instantaneous, effortless, and free .. DNS relies heavily on caching to improve performance. Unfortunately, this means names cannot be reliably updated in real time.

    Stateless autoconfiguration of hosts .. IPv6 hosts can be configured automatically when connected to a routed IPv6 network .. On 20 July 2004 ICANN that the root DNS servers for the Internet had been modified to support both IPv6 and IPv4.

    It isn't IPV6 exactly but a combination of PNRP (Peer Name Resolution Protocol) and FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name). See here where PNRP v2 is already incompatible with PNRP. According to this it's a combination of IPv4 and IPv6 called the Next Generation TCP/IP Stack and overcomes shortcomings in the DNS system. I find that article quite difficult to follow. Who would have thought name resolution would have been so complex. Is this one of those propriatry protocols that any third party has to pay MS royaltes to access. One of the protocols MS is being fined by the EU for not publicising. Some source code and API calls not being acceptable.

    They're free to use any patches as long as they don't call it Firefox. From what I can figure out it is a dispute over the use of the logo. Debian are happy to use the codebase they just don't want to include the logo. It's also not unreasonable for Mozilla to want to verify patches for Mozilla Firefox.

    I figure those opposing are big Oil and the corporations as anything done to reduce human impact on the environment would impact revenue. What hidden agenda do those finding evidence for global warming have? You claim it's only about funding.     I do know that edible fish round these shores have all but disappeared. Of what's left, the average size of catch is about one third of what it used to be. The seasons also seem to have disappeared. Doesn't get very cold in 'winter' and doesn't get very warm in 'summer' except when we get two weeks of a heat wave followed by a semi tropical hurricane.
