Blizzard was making a warhammer (warcraft) rts in conjunction with the rightsholders (i forget who it is/was) and at the last second backed out, changed the named just enough to not get sued, and released it as warcraft. They basically did the same with starcraft, only they did that independently and from the get go just used warhammer40k as an idea getter for them.
While the concepts involved are not new; city building, siege warfare, massive pvp battles, crafting just about EVERYTHING ingame, ships, full loot ffa pvp; they are all together for pretty much the first time in a new IP, and so far I and everyone else who managed to get the balls to leave the newb zones either solo or in a guild, have come to love the game.

The lore of the game is pretty good, but as it's an indie game they've had to forgo going 'all out' with making the lore/questing etc, as the bread and butter of the game is the city building/clan warfare, although the lore that they do have ingame/out is pretty damn good as well.
If anything MORE MMO's need to embrace almost all the features of AC. The fast/fluid PVP (albeit this was due to a bug they could NEVER replicate with coding that allowed for sliding while casting/performing an action and allowed for the best pvp to date in any MMO), the level of quality of the lore (none of the new shit, but 1999 - ~2001 or maybe even 2002 or 3, but after turbine took over shit only went downhill), the ability to really feel like you ARE a hero and take on dozens of mobs at a time and come out victorious if you manage your stats correctly in battle as well as take the time to dodge incoming projectile attacks if you're fighting that type of monster. AC was an amazing game, the best I've ever played, and I'm depressed everytime I see what it has become due to turbine's incompetence.

How is it wrong that they bundle Internet Explorer, or even integrate it entirely into, Windows? Windows is their property, if they wish to integrate functions x y and z into it, even hardcoding them in, what is the problem again?
AC was not polished, and it was 10x the game WOW is. WOW is nothing but a class/item/level based game, whereas in AC, if you were a level 90 who knew what he was doing, you could fight (in pvp) level 200's and kill them, or go to the hardest places in the game and hold your own.
Why would you play a single player game on anything other than the hardest difficulty? I've long wondered this as almost no game has any form of challenge outside of the hardest setting.
They're facing a heck of a battle with the fact that their game sucks. It was billed as a PVP game, yet the PVP is horrendous. If you want a game with actual sieging, player politics, city building, and full loot/ffa pvp (anything less is merely a pve game with pvp tacked on), try Darkfall Online.
