1) It's too complicated
2) Free boxes act as an incentive to use FedEx.
I'm sure that as long as there aren't any gross abuses of the free boxes, FedEx makes money of this deal. I think making furniture out of the boxes constitutes gross abuse, so FedEx is right to be upset. I'm not convinced their current approach to this problem is the most effective.
I agree. The same rules should apply to phone companies and to cable companies. The notion that the phone company is a "utility" but the cable company provides a "service" is outdated.
Games? You can apply this argument to the console, too.
Actually, I wouldn't. I would never buy a used Xbox since it has a hard drive. You just don't know what condition the system is in, or how long it will last.
Computer games don't go bad, so just wait a few weeks and buy a used copy. Only the impatient gamers will spend $60. Everyone else will benefit from their folly.
The rating system is not flexible enough. The only outcome of a poor feedback is account suspension or cancellation. In addition, you can only leave negative feedback for the worst offenses. Just being annoying doesn't qualify anyone for negative feedback.
I hear that Xbox 360 will have a more robust system.
I'm looking forward to the lawsuits if this done happen. It's one thing if your player has a bug that doesn't support a few newer DVDs. It's something else entirely if the whole movie industry has disabled your DVD player because someone you don't know hacked the same model.
Google groups is still just a wrapper around Usenet, it's just that you can create newsgroups that don't appear on anyone else's NNTP server. Google doesn't offer any of the other features of Yahoo Groups, like file/picture storage, a calendar, polls, and so on.
Timothy McVeigh was a real terrorist who was way worse than Padilla, and yet McVeigh got a fair trail. Evidence was presented in a court, he was convicted and executed. What makes Padilla an "enemy combatant" when McVeigh was just a criminal?
This was already discussed on slashdot not too long here. As others have said, this is a stupid idea and it's never going to happen. You can see my specific response and some follow-ups here.
You can buy a used copy of RE4 in great condition for $30 plus shipping. Why do you need to buy a new copy? Used computer games are typically indistinguishable from new ones.
I told him he deserved to be fired if he thought I was trying to get him fired even though I wasn't doing anything special to get him fired.
Frankly, I think that was just a stupid thing to say. You appear to be one of those people who are often belligerent and antagonistic when they shouldn't be. I just see no purpose in making a statement like that to your boss, even if it is true. You're supposed to have a healthy relationship with your co-workers. I can't help but think that your bosses were trying to do the right thing, but you wouldn't let them.
That's not really relevant. Finding one person (you) who hasn't committed any crimes after watching that stuff does NOT mean that you are a completely normal person, or that most people would act like you would.
In other words, anecdotal evidence is meaningless when used as a generalization.
The development team of the Sims Online game, for example, was 40% female, while 60% of its players are female.
What do the two have to do with each other? Why should the percentage of females creating a product be equal the percentage of females using it? The vast majority of people in the construction industry are men, but half of the people who walk into buildings are women. Do buildings need be to built by women in order for women to relate to them?
If my neighbor loses his home and it's replaced with a shopping mall, is that really in the public good? What if that shopping mall wants to expand? Then I'll lose my home! The public is not served if they are in constant fear that their homes will be taken from them just so that other people can drive a few miles less to buy a new pair of shoes.
Part of the problem is that it's very difficult to join a game that has similarly skilled opponents. Even Halo 2 doesn't get it right: your rank in one type of game is independent of other types of games. So for instance, you can play Big Team Battle for months and get to level 15, and then one day decide to try Team Skirmish. Well, you'd be ranked level 1 in those games because you've never played them before. Then you get matched with real newbies, and of course you blow them all away.
Frankly, I wish more of my friends had Xboxes so that I could play with them.
For the millionth time: Apple will not sell OS X separately, and OS X will not run on non-Apple hardware! How hard is this for people to understand?!?!?!?!?

Bullshit. You can get a one-year Live subscription off eBay for under $50, sometimes even $40.

Wow, you must be a lot of fun at parties.

Uh, what's wrong with the Mac version of Windows Media Player?

I was at Expo 98, but I haven't been to Portugal since then. Are those satellite images from 1998, or is that place still call "Expo 98"?
That's the opposite of what I wrote. I don't know how you thought I wrote that. I said that the anecdote of ONE person does not mean anything.

Better idea: pass an amendment that prohobits "riders", like what Minnesota has done (or so I've heard).
It would be interesting to see how many of those posts were made by users who visited the site by clicking on the actual link in the Slashdot story.
Hey, that's a pretty good idea. If I ever become a hiring manager, I'll do the same thing.
Uh, sorry. I got so worked up, I wasn't thinking straight.
