I do a lot of SEO/SEM and have some concerns. As a user, I LOATHE google instant. It took 5 tries to get my 100 results/page back, and every time I clear my cookies I have to start over. Questions about PPC impact:
1. If I bid on the phrase 'antique doorknobs' and someone starts typing in 'antique hair styles', maybe my ad shows up for a second before they're done typing. If my ad's 2 second display counts as an impression, my clickthrough rate could suffer and therefore my quality score and my bids would be forced up. Not to mention it's just more junk data messing up the real numbers.
2. Can advertisers opt out of this program? I only want my ads to display AFTER the user has typed in what they want.
3. Google does a number of things that have the effect of driving people to use more popular versions of keywords - fighting the long tail. Google suggest will 'helpfully' auto-complete your search queries with the most popular version. Sometimes this will help the user. Most of the time, users will be driven to use the most popular, most competitive, and costliest keywords possible. This drives up ad revenue and incites more competition for the most expensive keywords - a definite money maker for Google.
I tried several boxes before settling for the popcorn hour. the WD HD live was a complete piece of crap. It was tiny, the firmware updates didn't work, and I spent many hours beating my head against a wall trying to get homebrew or any other firmware to actually work on it. And I soldered my own chip into my xbox to run xbox media center long ago, so I know what I'm doing.
The algorithms the search engines use change consntatly, so Google might have better results one day, that could change to Yahoo and back in no time. I've found that I can find most anything in most any search engine if I use a long enough string of keywords, but outside of that there's an easy way to judge search engine quality, and that's how fresh their data is.
I recently moved a client from a small shopping site to a data-driven site with 40,000+ products. Google had 10k pages indexed inside of a month, whereas Yahoo, MSN and others were several times that. After a year, Google still eats up more bandwidth spidering the site than all other engines combined.
Algorithms change all the time, but you'll never find it in X search engine if they haven't seen the content.
Nothing hurks me off more than news reporters claiming a related factor causes anything (or in this case, reduces risk). Learn some statistics. The *only* thing they can claim is that those who drank coffee also experienced fewer cases of diabetes.
This is a correlation. Coffee drinking could cause lowered diabetes risk, the genetic predisposition towards getting diabetes could cause coffee drinking, or both could be casued by a third factor, such as loss of appetite or fewer sugary foods.
The 95% confidence interval for the study was 0.26 to 0.82, so not only do they not know the real cause, the real effect could be as little as 20%.
what an insulting pile this little article is. there are *actual* addictions out there that have physcial, chemical attributes that are real, calling a game an addiction is just fucking stupid. i know, let's call anyone who tries to control others a nazi! that won't dilute it at all!
he says he is writing to those who are considering buying the game, yet talks about nothing but the high level game. i myself have played for about 3 years, and yes most of what he says is true. some of it is just retarded, like:
The bottom line being, you can go to bed one night with a great character and items, and wake up in the morning to find all that has changed; leaving you holding your member and your opinions mattering less than a pig's squeals in a slaughterhouse.
this shit doesn't happen. sometimes they make items that are far too powerful and it has to be changed for the health of the game. anyone with any comprehension of game design knows this. yeah monks got nerfed, but they needed to be.. sony didn't do it right, but they're trying and no one's perfect. yeah i have my complaints but i don't hate them. it's impossible to develop a game that will please 300k+ subscribers, welcome to reality. and that shit about greifers is just bullshit. sony doesn't do shit to police the game, true, but people can't hide from their reputations, and the community polices itself.
but really, it takes *years* of playing to even encounter all these horrible problems, most people take over a year to reach a high level. and no one says you have to. when was the last time you played a game that was enjoyable that long? i spent many months playing quake, etc, but eq is even more compelling. i have a job, i go to school, i have a girlfriend. it's a fucking game, and it's fun.
people claim to be 'addicted' to fast food, porn, sex, driving, video games, the internet, blah blah. calling a game an addiction is an insult to anyone who's ever felt real withdrawl.
eq is fun because it's a big world to explore, and you can develop your virtual toon. that and the massive community of folks to meet and hang out with. i've got a number of real friends that i met online whose friendship is worth more than the game itself.

At the risk of sounding like an AOLer, I have to say me too. I've had my kinesis for 2 years, and not only are my wrists not numb and sore all the time anymore, but I type twice as fast. I wasn't a great typist before I got this, and one of the coolest side effects was it kept me honest to the home keys, and eventually I learned to use those pinkies. On a side note, it also acts as security by obscurity in my office, as my coworkers are too afraid of my goofy looking keyboard to ever get on my machine.
I've had soc 101 so I feel I'm an expert in this arena, and based on a few years of meeting chicks online, feel I must contribute. One thing I've found to be true of both sexes who are looking for a date online is that in most cases there's a good reason. I don't think it's unfair to call it a last resort, in spite of the undeniable benefits of getting to know someone before appearance comes into it. Granted that, I think most people turn to the net for love when the usual channels aren't working. This applies to myself as well, and it doesn't necessarily mean you have a hunchback.. Given that physical attraction is, for the vast majority of the population, a requirement for romance, it seems like a lot of effort just to find out the other person ain't that good looking. Of course, if like me you're just spending work time doing it, nothing lost. And there's always the longshot that pays off. One problem with it is that I think many geek guys are a bit intimidated by women, and the role men are supposed to play when picking one up. It's much easier to be interesting on irc at 20 or even 40 wpm than to try to think of stuff to say to a woman when you're face to face. That's a double-edged sword though, as it can make your RL self even less adept at making a good impression. I know if I email a girl for too long before talking on the phone it's a real transition to be charming at full speed, but maybe I'm just slow. I think the chances of finding someone you can get along with isn't all that great, but it's no worse than in the carbon community. for me it's all moot, because the only time I've ever fallen in love is when I wasn't looking.. My suggestion to all you lonely guys is to go out with your friends and have a good time, go to places where there are women, and you'll eventually find one. And take a chance and talk to that cutie in the black leather boots.. the worst that can happen is you'll crash and burn, (I know) but you'll get more comfortable approaching women.
Greed has killed a lot of companies for the sake of a quarterly earnings report. The reason most of us drive foreign cars is during the 60's and 70's the american manufacturers would change the fin size of a caddy and call it a new model year, while the japanese were putting their effort into r&d. slowly the americans are catching up a little, but it's much worse in the tech biz. Innovation is all you have to seperate yourself from your comp. Look at how amd took over the under $1000 pc market in a year because their processor was better and cheaper. SGI will only survive if their products are the best, and firing a few thousand seasoned employees and hiring scabs ain't gonna do it.
A year ago I went out and set myself up with a nice k62 350 with a mb with a via chipset. I had heard it was one of the best, but they claimed no NT support, and I had endless problems running an agp vid card with nt. pci was fine, as was agp on 98, but I had to run nt for cold fusion so I was forced to take it back and spend 400 more on a p2 that was almost as fast... I've read of lots of chipset problems with the k6-2, I pray the k7 chipsets are better, because it sure smokes the p3!

So the definition of bleeding money is a quarterly profit? I wish I bled more.
