And why is Linux any better? (I'm assuming you're a Linux advocate here.)

In fact, until I see any evidence that OSS is anything more than copying ideas and letting everyone see the code, I'll go out on a limb and say that OSS has little to no innovation.

As much as I don't like the Windows UI, at least Microsoft are doing new stuff. Well... new-ish at any rate.

What has Linux given us that a proprietary OS hasn't? Is openness is the only answer? Where are the Linux UI improvements that are completely new? Why is it that the thousands of coders behind Linux still can't hack up a new UI concept that passes muster and makes it into a distribution?

Open Source is a great thing. But it's not the only way to go, and closed source can generate a revenue stream that open source simply cannot. Where there's money, there's funding for research into new ideas. It's a sad reality, but it's the only one we have.

But then, you seem to be trolling. At least you didn't come out with that "sitting here in front of my new G5 Mac while waiting 17 minutes for it to copy a 20MB file" meme, so you're not all bad.

I mean incidents, not just knowledge-base articles.

I work in a ... very... large company (one of the top five in the Fortune 500) and I'm in the Australian section of one division. Our support is handled by Dell. We don't ever call Microsoft, and frankly I'd be stunned if Dell staff do either.

If Dell switched to RedHat, that would make no difference to the users as far as support goes. We'd still call our HelpDesk and they're either Dell or go to Dell as the next level.

The original OS vendor is neither here nor there. The support comes from other companies.

Even if a company was to call Microsoft and log an issue, there's a big support cost. Windows doesn't come with support for free (possibly a couple of phone calls for personal users though). Businesses have to pay for support. Why call someone when you can get a contractor on-site?

I think the answer is that you *do* care, and being a PC fanboy, you hate the fact that Apple are making real strides and doing things that Microsoft can't seem to (like stick to their OS schedules).

Realistically, this doesn't impact you in any way whatsoever, as you've got your PC, and you're probably happy with what you paid for it.

So why do you hate the concept of the Mac so much?

Is it because you hate anything *different*?

Is it because it threatens to invalidate your choices?

Face yourself - you care, and the proof of that is in your post. You're coming across as someone who's upset about something that really shouldn't affect you.

Oh - to your 'point'... I'll go out on a limb and say that most Slashdot readers know about technology - where it's been, where it is now and some vague idea of where it's going next. Most people are reasonably well educated around here. They're capable of making their own choices, and they're capable of making informed choices.

Apple are gaining a lot of mindshare around here because they're doing a lot of things right. OS X is the best OS out there, and is actually innovating. People can read the source code for Darwin if they like, and contribute to it if they want to. Macs are easier to use than ever, and people like that.

What can we do on our Macs that you can't on your PC? We can forget the computer and use the things as the tools they are. I don't have to screw around on my iBook to get things working, or to maintain the system integrity. The OS takes care of that for me. I don't have to worry about it. I can get on and just use the apps to get stuff done.

I've used computers since 1981 (when I was 10), and I've seen pretty much everything that's happened in the industry. I've used Windows since 3.1, and before that DOS, CP/M, Amiga-OS and others. I know what I'm talking about. In my view, OS X is the current pinnacle of operating systems. People are noticing it, and people are buying Macs.

If you don't like it, you'll have to learn to live with it.
