and let your kids, wife, parents, etc. surf on there and then you connect your computer via a LAN? Living in a family of 7 with myself being the only Linux geek, they would get a lot of links off my siblings while I play on my Linux computer:) -philsky To.sig or not to.sig. That is the question
How are our "cyber ethics" supposed to be? Shouldn't we just apply the ethics we use in our everyday life to our computer usage? I don't think we need a seperate state of ethics. Just apply what you believe in real life to computers. If you believe staling is wrong, then don't steal that spiffy javascript from someone elses computer. True, it's just a bunch of zeroes and ones, but it's stil his property. If you believe adultery is wrong, then don't surf porn..... you get the picture!

The only difficulties I've encountered is when accessing a page that wants a username and passowrd... at that point in time, you get an error sayign access is denied,... howevever, if you put http://user:pass@securesite.com/phil/index.html it works! KDE rocks!
OK, let's think about Gateway, or Packard Bell. I work for an ISP, they all ship out with Lucent or rockwell Piece-of-junk WinModems, onboard SiS chipsets and the like... and other things that have yet to be supported by Linux... how are they going to do this? Are they going to get some better hardware, or write drivers themselves? Just a thought,
Awesome! IMHO, this is the way Palm can overtake CE - ComapctFlash support. Bu having compact flash it becomes amazingly more expandable... you can hook up to a network, have more memory, and do all the other cool things CE devices can do...
So you don't accidentally kill your computer, you could make Init and csh into chain gunmen, or those goat-people... that way you couldn't accidentally kill them, well, unless you had the BFG;-)
I love my nino, not because it's a good PIM, but rather because it has so much software for it.... there are so many technical apps, games, network tools, the like. It was basically a PC in your hand.
The real question is if you put a thousand monkeys on a thosand computers with Dvorak keyboards, will they print out anything more intelligent than a thousand monkeys on computers with QWERTY keyboards?
I totally, 100% agree about your point of Linux becoming too point-and-click. You are so right about this. However, I welcome the software because now I can install it on my work computer to use it during break, etc. I'm not allowed to repartition the hard drive. Also, at home, I can install a copy of Linux onto outo my family's PC and still have it nice and easy for my parents to get into Win98 (ie, no LILO) -philskyD
How hard can it be? Really? Dumb hubs shouldn't need any upgrading whatsoever... and "smart" ones and switches... all you need to do is add more memory to the switches to store the longer IP string, and change the variables for holding IP addresses to a bigger value.... I really don't see a huge problem, but maybe that's why I don't do embedded circuits:-) -philsky
If you have the computer link cable for the TI calc, on the site ticalc.org (I think) there is a terminal program... hook an external 9.6 modem to the computer link cable and start hacking! -phil
filtering can be done server-side rather than on the end-user machine. Our proxy can tell us who tried to access what site from what machine... therefore, it really doesn't matter if monitorings software is on the other machine.
I've worked at 2 difrent jobs. First one is a maker of hospital software, where I worked (I'm only 17, so it was more like learned and worked) in the IS department. Right before I left they started monitoring outcoming email, not for conten but for regularity... IE, if you got 10 outside emails a day not related to work, that's bad. We also blocked porn, hack sites (Though not/.) We objected to some of this, but the boss insited, since he believed taking time to do emails non-work related cut at company time. Granted, most employees only worked 9-to-5, but one of our arguments was what about the smokers who get 3 + cigarette breaks a day... totalling to, perhaps, an half-hour? I guess, bottom line is you have to monitor, 'cuz no one can be trusted. As far as punishment ??? I don't know.
The second job I'm currently at is an ISP. Grand total of 7 employees, no blockers, feel free to do email at work... I feel motivated to work hard 'cuz he's given me the right to break loose when I need it... I wish more companies could try that model, though I do realise in a bigger corporate environment it is more easily abused... -philskyD

switch that workstation of yours from NT to Linux... it sounds as you are suffering from a case of the common NT-itis
