While I am decidedly not anti-gun, you forgot that in some states you can go to gun shows and buy almost anything; and without the requisite background check.
Although I agree with all of those things, I would say I would trade my office for a 50% pay raise any day. I would just have to start studying zen practices to help cope!
Most email is now sent as plain text. Anyone sniffing the sending net or the receiving net can already read your email......i.e. you would have already received the cheap server.....
I wouldn't say I read it, but I did skim through it, and it did seem valid to me. No, I didn't memorize the patent #....why would I care that much? Anyway, I'm not trolling I just think it's funny how things are approached around here.
If you have ever read anything I have posted you would know I'm not a troll I just have descenting views from many at/. and like to argue my side of things. Gen. Patton once said "If everyone is thinking alike than no one is thinking." I think that applies to you pretty well.
BTW, did YOU read it or are you trolling?
NO just the opposite....I am implying that the Linux community acts like their OS is some impervious, gods-gift-to-computing creation....Elitists to the core...You guys love to throw stones and it gets annoying....Your little home brewed OS can't make it up the hill to relevancy so you incessantly try to make it seem better than it is.
It is the anger and aggresive approach that so many Linux users (and Slashdotters especially) come across with that annoys me. If you want people to use Linux, convince them it is better WITHOUT even bringin MS into the discussion.
Also, since I am ranting; I'm sick of the idea of "free" software that is not free. You all talk about how ware should be free and then make it so the thing is such a pain to configure or missing so many tools that you have to call PAID support. It's more like con-ware than opensource.....
I don't get why you guys want everything for free.....They spent money to help dev it so they could make more money in the end....I swear sometimes this site just makes me laugh out loud. You guys are going to make me get in trouble at work lol. Seriously though...this patent seems very valid.
There is no such thing as free beer.

You just have to love the fact that when it is an article on Windows vulnerabilities, you all jump on it and proclaim how terrible Microsoft is. But when it is on Linux it is outdated and half true.....
I think we have some confusion here. Registering is NOT the same as activating. They also ask you for no real information when activating. Considering that I know quite a few people who have NEVER bought Windows and have been running different flavors of it for years, MS has every right to try to stop people from pirating their software. To add to Nash's example; if you steal some food from a store and get sick from it, don't expect the grocer to then give you the medication to feel better.
Actually, this whole conversation doesn't make sense. I think the only statement anyone needs to make is DON'T STEAL. I also don't understand the GP thing. Do you know how to read? Were you hiding under a rock in 2001 when they released XP? Activation was one of the major topics everyone was talking about back then.
Yes your right. Though the infamopus the military/industrial complex won't have much time since they are spending it all hiding the alien technology their basing our new weapons on and planning the next faked moon landing. Ugh...one word for you....TROLL!
If this is true, then in my opinion the fact that they are outsourcing and not saving money is worse than outsourcing to India. Why outsource then? What is the benefit? They surely are benefiting in some way, probably monetarily, with the outcource or they wouldn't have done it. Why would they waste money to move opperations if there was no benefit??
All I can say is Wow. That is the most outrageous load of crap I have ever seen I think, next to the SCO suit, lol.....she should be charged with some form of crime for wasting a public officials time or something, at the very least she should be placed in a mental institution if she's serious.
I think they just wanted to show that this attorney has a track record of bullying the government.About his home.....You can't put personal freedom before the welfare of the general public. If building some gargantuan home is going to cause issues for those around them, be it intrinsic or financial, that presents a problem. Now your actions are infringing on the rights of others. Freedom doesn't mean absence of regulation.
Intel produces chips that are inferior to and more expensive than their AMD counterparts You may want to reevaluate that statement. I think you'll find merits on both sides of the fence. AMD's price is great but there are other things to be considered. I would say products on both sides of the fence have some merit.
That is my point. When was that formula created and by what standard? Large corps? If that is the case I agree. With smaller companies I think 2-3 years is a little too quick. If I told the senior partner that I need to buy new computers every 2 or 3 years to run word, excel, and Summation (a legal app that runs through a browser no less) he would laugh at me for a very long time and fins a new IT manager!
I work for a medium sized law firm, and let me tell you getting them to spend money is not very fun sometimes. While we do run XP on our workstations, we are still running 2000 Server on all of our servers. I can't see them spending a ton of money to upgrade any time soon, so I'm stuck. Considering most products that cost > $500 are considered "Big Ticket" items by most in the retail industry (where my old job was) and those items are supposed to last at least 10 years, I don't see 5 years as being a long time. In all honesty I doubt anyone but large orgs with lots of money have made the move to 2003, especially if they have more than 1 or 2 servers. I'm sick of MS greed, despite the fact that I've built a career on it and there lazy coding practices. Which are probably a product of greed also.
Long live Micro$oft and their bugs! Only in this case the dollar sign is mine! lol
But I agree, with frgough: Apple will probably lock it down to run on Apple-brand only
The PSP has already been hacked to play NGB games less than a year after release. The XBox was hacked almost instantly, and that was another Intel Proc system with custom hardware. What makes anyone think Apple will be able to "Lock It Down" so we can't get it to run on a PC??
Yes, you would find it to be a "god send"... so what? Allowing dual booting of Mac and Win is completely NOT what Apple is doing with this stuff. Doesn't really matter what they are doing with this stuff. The article was on what impact the change would have on Linux. I'm just saying I am one of the people who will shell out the cash for an apple now even though I wouldn't have before, and explaining why.....I don't care what there motives are, but I know how it will impact my own actions.....what do I care of their motives?
They know that most users don't know that they can convert file formats and will blissfully by themselves an ipod/whatever crappy mp3 player microsoft will certainly launch soon, if they own a bunch of songs with that format.
Note:
You can't convert DRMed files you purchased to mp3 in iTunes...

True, it should have. I just get a kick out of how many people on this site are so quick to discount ANY patent.

Yes, the experience that too many geeks are way too insecure. The little OS that could, hasn't and they are crying because of it.

Why is this even on slashdot, other than to annoy people?

Unless you drifted, in which case you could end up in a planetary ring. Then you'd have a whole lot of plowing to do!

I wish there was a way to convince my boss of this! Though we do buy computers in lots, it sure isnt every year! :)
