It's not our problem that they can't figure out how to protect their web site from being used fraudulently.
The point here is that their web site IS safe...but the users system is not...with no access to your system how is their site going to determine the transaction is safe....It would be IMPOSSIBLE to make sure the transaction was indeed secure without your local PC being inspected.
vtcodger:
I agree that abuse could happen....but if an unbiased third party were involved then the abuse factor would almost be eliminated. As for "I dunno. Maybe because they are the ones offering the damn service." If you use that logic...all car accidents are the fault of the state...they provide the roads so they should make sure your car is safe!? That makes no sense....their service can be totaly secure...but if you have nine key-loggers installed from torrent trojans they can't do shit about it and it is YOUR fault your money was stolen.
Also, you said: "In any case, prudent users probably will not use these services."
Uhhhhh......A LOT of people use online banking and purchase things online, myself included. If your system is secure, then it is a relatively safe environment....
IMO it's about time ppl had to take responsibility for their system. Why on earth should a bank take a loss when it was your fault? I don't get to go to the bank and expect them to replace the cash I withdrew yesterday that got stolen from my pocket.....This might be the push ppl need to get them to pay attention.....computers are here to stay....the "I don't understand computers very well excuse is really old.....just because you don't understand the way a locking mechanism in your door works doesn't mean you shouldn't fix it if it is broken.....
In ten years (more like 20, my kids are 1 and 2), if my kids potential employer is worried about some rumors on myspace or whatever, they probably shouldn't work for such a naive person anyway. I'm an IT director and I do a lot of hiring. The only thing I would take any stock in is something that was posted by the employee, their school or an organization of some repute. "I hate you" and "She's a slut" posted on myspace by someone else is hardly anything I would take into consideration.
As for the Virginia Tech guy, I could also say it is the coddling culture that this politically correct shit is creating that is causing this. If they weren't so worried about what a bunch of idiots thought of them, and their parents didn't cultivate this weakness, the guy wouldn't have slipped off his rocker cuz of a bunch of morons in college. If you look into the past of all these guys, their problems started way before the bullying. Cho was thought to be mentally ill by his own family at a very young age, and the rest of them come from some pretty shady backgrounds with some very REAL problems in the REAL world. Alcohol, mental illness and abuse in the household have been the major contributors for these types of actions for a long time and they still are. How bout focusing on getting better treatment and earlier recognition of the mentally disturbed, etc.?
To shoot up a school is a cowardly act of a fool and so is bullying. Stop raising foolish cowards that are scared to have people call them names. Instead, give them a backbone and teach them what is right. If you choose to allow the bullying to bother you it does, if you don't it won't.
What in hell ever happened to personal responsibility and common sense? If you want to stop kids from turning into lunatics, stop worrying about "cyber bullying" and start looking at their homes. IMO that's where it usually starts.
Remember the saying "Sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never hurt me"? I think that is more accurate here than at any other time. How big of pussies do we want our kids to be? Should we make sure that every damned web page has a smiley face on it? Stop feeding your kids anti-depressants and if they complain about someone bullying them on a computer kick their ass and tell them to grow some fucking testes. This is getting outrageous.....more politically correct bullshit...
And if he was a Linux guy and said Linux was more secure? Let me guess, you wouldn't question it a bit.....I love how all people do is gripe about how vulnerable XP is. Well MS listened (for once) and came out with a decently secure OS. Why does the programming community insist on acting like spoiled children at every turn. Fix the bugs and stop griping!
Windows guy, "My OS is better than your OS."
Linux guy, "No, My OS is better!"
Windows guy, "No, it's not! I have a new one and it's better!"
Linux guy, "Mommy! That Windows guy said his OS is better!"
Yes I am a troll, since on this site EVERYONE that doesn't act like a pompous, elitist asshole is a troll. I get it now and will not assume otherwise. Honestly, I don't even know why I read this shit. I come for the news articles and get sucked into arguments with a bunch of hippies and kids.....fuck it....you guys guys are a joke.....
Yeah, you're all so cool...like that dork in the Apple commercials. At least PC users don't rely on their gear to make them "cool". But I have to ask, why don't the introverted gamers AND the drunken, partying waste case extroverts do something useful for once? Set up a (favorite flavor here) Linux system and read the Linux Programmers Toolbox; then you might actually do something productive instead of getting wasted, taking drugs and getting STDs.
".....IMHO, if an access point is unsecured and available, it should be fair game for public use......."
If you run to the store and leave the backdoor to your house unlocked, should I be able to come in and start drinking your beer and eating your pizza? You paid for these things and I didn't, so what gives me the right to them?
I can't argue with the fact that they shouldn't be unsecured. Thats just stupidity. But then again, so is leaving your doors unlocked, but it's still not legal to come in......
First of all, the comment was meant to be humorous, an obvious spoof of the "in soviet russia"-jokes.
I am tired of hearing the "America is the devil" crap. Just about every government out there is screwed in many ways...yet the States gets the crap for it. As an American, it is tiresome.
Second, because people have served to protect certain values, does in no way ensure, the government upholds them.
I can't really argue here, this pisses me off every day.
Third, Nope, I'm not a Che shirt type, not a musician, don't have long hair, don't smoke weed all day, and don't believe in socialism. Your presumptions about me are fundamentally wrong, why do you make them?"
Again, the "fascist" remark is something used in the States by overzealous college students all the time that do wear Che shirts and I interpreted your statement as being from one of these types. That is why I made the presumptions.
Fourth, i NEVER used the words "Totally screwed", it appears you deliberately misquote me, but i'll bite the flamebait.
The "typically american" statement, is because i've only ever been called a dork (for making a joke like that) by Americans. I misquoted you. Sorry about that. As for "typically american" statements.....again I must ask what is typically American? You are guilty of the same presumtuous actions you blame me for above.
Fifth, if me calling you typically american is what you consider an insult, then i guess i got my message through.
I never said I was insulted by this. Actually, since I think of America as what the founding fathers thought of it and not what the Bush administration has turned it into, I would consider that a compliment. I am a typical American, just not in the ways you are thinking.
Sixth, Yes i might've insulted you before you replied, but you called me a dork, before i said you were typically american.
So this is kinda like the childrens saying "I know you are but what am I?" But again, it is no matter since we think of typical Americans as being very different and I don't take that as an insult.
COME ON, ARGUE AGAINST THE CONTENT NOT THE FORM!!!
I started to once I realized you weren't some left-wing nut.
I do agree that the Bush Administration is screwed and our representatives are a bunch of lying, money hungry, deceitful bastards with no backbone. The WHOLE FUCKING WORLD IS THAT WAY! Which is my point. It is not just the USA and I'm tired of people acting like the States are so screwed up. We are all screwed up; and by all I mean all....the world.
Don't worry, i'm not gonna call you names, or make presumptious statements about what you wear or what your political views are, just that your reply to me appears typically american (as in usaian).
First let me say, if you call America fascist you have already insulted me since I am American and believe in many of the values this country was based on and served to protect it. Second, I didn't presume anything since your statement made your political views blaringly obvious. I have never seen a "Center/Conservative" use the word fascist. It's always the Che shirt types. Third, saying the "US is totally screwed" is not exactly accurate. I would prefer to say, "The whole world is screwed" cuz it is.....Lastly, exactly how do you sum up 300 million people? What is "Typically American?" That's like saying all Irish are drunks or the Brits have bad teeth. It's just plain false...So you just called me names and made presumptuous statements even before I posted a response, then after in your response.
Where are you from anyway?
I just want to say that this is the first post I have ever encountered that was so moronic that I couldn't come up with any one reply. My thought process breaks down in light of such stupidity to a point that I am just speechless. Some of you slashdot readers really need to get out of your Linux box once in a while and think about things.....or turn 13 years old....I'm not sure which one is more prevalent, idiocy or naivety.....
This is like the, "Go away Cop, I pay your salary", argument. You also pay for Abrahms tanks, F-18 Hornets, Stinger Missles, etc. Do you honestly believe you should have access to those also? Com'on people, think out of your paranoid, left-wing browsing Linux box for a moment and come back down to the real world....at least once in a while....
That all was happening as the real terrorists were planning their 9/11 attack. Gotta love our government...
For one thing, it doesn't matter what country your in or the government in power, if you talk about killing the leader it will probably not end well for you. Also, I don't understand how this is a bad story? It doesn't even sound like he was harrased. He was talking about killing the president, they stopped by and spoke to him and his family to get a read on if the guy was unstable or not. Since he wasn't removed from his workplace for questioning, they probably determined he wasn't a threat and went on with their day. Where exactly is the harm in this story?
In fascist America, the company owns you (and your government)
I have two words to sum up this guy.....
Left-wing dork.
I bet he wears Che shirts too......
Tinfoil hats and conspiracy theories are all fun and good, but my idea is....what the heck are we all hiding from? I don't, and will never, understand what the big deal is here.
If you are a U.S. Citizen then you probably:
-Have a Social Security Number and card
-Have a State ID, Passport and/or Drivers License
-Have to give the IRS your address or bank info once a year (if you are wokring and pay taxes)
Since most of us already have those things, what's the big deal? The government already has your info and you already carry at least one if not multiple ID's on you. Put away the tinfoil hat and give it up.
I will finally be convinced that any Linux based app is a Microsoft killer when slashdot stops touting it as a MS killer. Seems like everytime something is touted on/. as a MS killer, all it does is kill the web site that the article is on....then MS laughs all the way to the bank....

The government should have to prove its merits -- not have people like you say; "what could possibly go wrong?" That isn't much of a discussion.

At about 50 cents a gig, I'll stick to speed and security rather than trying to save 500 megs of drive space.

I don't get the whole zen desktop thing either. I can decorate my office and my desk (with some limitation), why can't my computer be more than ugly?
But Nvidia never made the claim, only board manufacturers that use there chips. Nvidia is in the clear.
