  1. I mentioned this to BT a while ago on Bell Canada Turns Payphones into Public Hotspots · · Score: 2

I mentioned this to BT (UK) a while ago...They have been putting these new payphones that have Broadband, text messaging, Phone, email, web all in a phone box. The logical extension to this would be to add a WiFi areial. This would be a minimal add-on in cost and provide great service for certain types of WiFi users.

They basically ignored the idea and thought it wouldn't work. I hope this proves them wrong. Imagine being able to pull up next to any payphone and get internet access. In my opinion this is one of the best ways to spread the range of hotspots at a cheap price. They don't even have to sign up the HotSpot locations as they own the spot already. /b

Digital watermarking essentially puts a mark in the music that can be read by special software. It is meant to be non audable to the human ear but that is debatable.

Watermarking is probably the lesser of evils as it does not stop you copying the music (AFAIK). What it will do however is provide an audit trail of where the music came from. Say a street vendor was busted for selling pirated CD's. They could test the CD's and see that it came from UserX on the UMG service. They could then go to userX and asked him/her how the music ended up on thousands of pirated CD's.

It seems they are trying to create a balance between fully restrictive downloading and playing and free for all mp3/ogg files. Personally I think it is the wrong way to go but time will tell. /b

Oh and if you live in Australia then they are gonna charge you for going over your bandwidth limit. So you have 3 choices. Netflix and 3 day lag, Download and possible data charges, or forsake quality and and download divx versions of the movies. /b

  5. The issues to address on A Universal Roaming Profile? · · Score: 2

Well, at least not anytime soon. Trust me. I'm in the sync business. The solution is to have a multipoint sync feature that allows all your 'devices' to sync to a central point. Where that central point is should not matter. Trust your ISP? Host it there. Trust Yahoo!? Leave it there. Want to stick it on your home network? No problem.

The next problem is getting the devices to talk with each other in a standard langauge...but that is not going to happen. you have to have an engine that can translate between the different devices. Take recurring appointments. Palm can handle certain features, Lotus Notes others and Outllok still others. What happens when you try and keep them all in sync? You have to allow for all the different capabilities. Not easy.

Then you have supported platforms. Just how many contact lists do you keep? For me I have the following...Palm, PocketPC, SyncML Phone, Outlook, Yahoo!, Hotmail, Evolution. That's seven different places to keep in sync. Then there are the bookmarks. I use Mozilla, IE, PocketIE, Konqueror and AvanteGo on several machines. I have bookmarks scattered about all of them.

Then there is filtering. Do you really need all of that information on one device? No. I only want my personal stuff on my home PC but both on my work PC. /b

PS: When I say device I mean a data point. I.e Outlook is a device Lotus Notes is one, A Palm is one, etc.

PPS: If someone says just stick it all online and access when you need it; Wake up. When you are 100 miles from the nearest cell tower and you don't have coverage...thats when you want access the data that you have only stored online.

  7. Once setup it is easy on Enigmail Standard In Mandrake 9.0 · · Score: 2

A mate and I tried to setup encrypted email a couple of months back. I use evolution and he uses Pine (I Think). The hardest part was setting up the public/private keys and getting all that working. We had to do that via the command line which 'end users' wouldn't find easy. Once we had done that then it is _really_ easy to use in evolution. Simply create a new email and select 'Security|PGP Encrypt' and its done. In pine the problem was reading the email I sent. my friend had to save the attachment and then decrypt it. However sending encrypted email from pine was easy.

I do agree though that once it is a seamless process from setup to use then it will become more popular. /b

The highs are crisp and clear and you can actually hear the midrange...top this off with some thumping bass (Fabric has it coming straight through the floor) and you can't beat it. Trance, Hard Hou se, Drum 'n Bass or god forbid UK Garage it doesn't matter, a good system sounds excellent and if your source material sucks then the output is going to be bad

Although I do agree that song selction is key, how you mix them is also equally important. This may be easier or hard on turntables/mp3's depending on the music. You will find that most DJ's in the 'Hippy Trance' scene use CD's, its a pretty simple mixing technique that is used. However other genres need techniques particualry suited to turntables.
