The device also has a built-in microphone and stereo speakers which Philips says will allow users to listen to MP3s streamed from the Internet
Great, instead telling my PC (via the remote) to stream my mp3's directly to my $5,000 stereo I can listen to them on the remote through crappy little $10 speakers. Makes the listening experience so much better.;-)
Considering you can already get 512MB (1GB maybe?) on an SD, CF, or MemoryStick which is 1/4 of the size why would you want one with moving parts if it is only 1.5GB? Price would be the only reason so it is really not anything special. If it was 15GB then it would be something to write about./b
You would be correct. But come on, most readers are probably American where 'Electronica' only reall started to catch on with FatBoy Slim and late era Prodigy. Although I cannot say I was part of the scene (I was 17 and living in NZ at the time), I remeber reading about rave cuture and listening to Acid House then.
Those were they days...The music just ain't the same now;-)
Whatever the technical definition is of broadband (what several people have pinted out already) is not the issue. It is the marketing definition that is what counts here. In the UK 'Broadband' has been specifically linked with a 'High speed, always on connection'. Not only that but it is what you can do with this connection. The advertising from BT (An ADSL Wholesaler) has cleary stated online gaming, movie trailers, audio and multimedia content. Given this definition 128kbs is not broadband.
This 128kbs service should be marketed and targeted to an audience that wants an always on connection that is faster than Dialup but may not want as much streaming multimedia content./b
Landline? Whats that? Haven't used one of those for a while. Seriously, the only reason I have a landline is for ADSL and international calls. I always use my mobile to make mobile calls as I know it is included in my monthly minutes./b
Not sure which country you are in but most networks in the UK offer 'Anytime, Any network' with inclusive minutes. Once you have reached the limit then the extra call charges kick in but as long as you select a decent call package then you should be right. Orange offers a pretty good feature where you can pick and choose your number of minutes, txts, GPRS, etc. to customise your call plan.
The author did not state that everyone should only work on one thing. He said people should work on a smaller number of projects. I agree that there are a lot of 'me to' projects on sourceforge that should probably never have been started.
I also think that there should be choice. But choice for choices sake just doesn't make sense. The variety of software should be spawned by a real need to provide a better more focused application than may already be available.
They did the same thing according to the book 'No Logo'. Give influential kids product to make it desirable by their peers. In Nikes, Hilfigers case give it to young, black inner city kids to create a 'need' amongst their peers.
Unless this thing actually can find out the things that people are excited about that aren't well-known, it's pretty much just another search tool limited to blogs.
Thats the whole point. Weblogs are not the mainstream media so he is betting that a new craze (or refresh of an old one) will show up there beofore the mainstream sites get a hold of. Face it, once it has hit CNN it is already past its sell by date.
Take the whole potato gun thing for instance. if this was appearing on peoples weblogs 6 months ago and an underground following had started then it would pick this up. Could be a perfect time for one of the toy companies to start producing a parent friendly version (Not sure how...but hey!). By the time the craze hits CNN Toys 'R Us is stocked with a version that fires water ballons, only uses compressed air and comes in 10 different plastic colours. Then they would have the advantage before the other companies jump on the bandwagon.
Of course, since there is only a very specific socioeconomic subset of the world population weblogging, what real usefulness does this give us?
A lot! Let me see, I have a large group of people who are rich, computer owning, and probably middle/Upper Middle Class all saying they want X. Now who is your target audience again? Not low income, no disposible cash types.
Try Washington DC. It smells like a swimming pool it has so much clorine and shit in it to keep it clean. IMHO London drinking water is some of the best 'Big City' water around.
Does it also support VNC over SSH? That would be sweet. I also read that they are removing the Interface from the VNC backend so we can plug more protocols in. VNC is OK but I hear there are better ones out there. Also support for Wndows Terminal services would be good.
Not that I am complaining...This release looks great. When Gentoo finallly releases their new version I'm gonna be upgrading.
Well the dates on the files for 3.1 are 24 Jan. What files are those? RC7?

We carry Mobile phones which have this cool feature called an 'Address Book' where you can store all your friends numbers. And another feature called a 'Call List' where you can dial numbers that a) you have recently dialled or b) have recently called you.
Seriously this accounts for 90% of the calls I make. Most calls involve pressing 'Yes' on my phone followed by the first letter of the persons name and then yes again.
Another cool feature is directory assistance where they just SMS you the number and you dial straight from your phone (They can also connect you but that costs a lot more).
Who needs a landline when you have all your numbers at your fingertips?/b
and he can eat for a day. Give a man a fishing rod and they can eat for life....or something like that.
So imagine having a wireless link to a hospital that is 300 miles away. The local semi trained nurse could hook up to the hospital (or another one in another country) with a camera and get expert advice on how to treat a patient without the need to fly 300 miles to the hospital. The money saved on the flight could then be used to supply yet another village with better medical supplies and training.
Giving local people access to resources about building wells and wind turbines and there maintance could empower the people to help themselves instead of been given handouts. Information on better faming techniques...The list goes on.
By itself Internet access will not help but combined with an other things it becomes another tool to help.
Designed to be acceptable to advertisers and agencies, the package was created in response to advertiser demand for simpler, more cost effective units and a stronger creative palette.
Glad that they thought of the consumer when they invented these new sizes.
I just went and say the exhibit at the ICA tonight. This stuff is pretty cool. The basic premise is that there was a missing link in home recording and this product really should have existed at some point. The images, music and cover art of the vinyl is super nice.

Why is that?
Maybe some one should send a copy to KDE. ;-)
Oh wiat. You mean _that_ NUMA.

There are a bunch of pics of the machine being built and none of anyone getting drunk and throwing up?
What do they do with it? Stand there, look at it and and tweak the kernel?
Damn Geeks.
