I know the point was that with larger hard drives was that we can store larger amounts of data. In this case, we're talking about storing images and audio without compression so they're archived perfectly. Lossless compression does make a difference and conserves space.

You might already know about these but: FLAC for audio (works great), ffvhuff (from ffmpeg) for video in the YUV colorspace. Those are the two I can think of that currently work pretty well.

Especailly with ffvhuff (a modified Huffyuv) for a 704x480 stream at 24 minutes, I will get a file that's about 14GiB (results will vary, of course.) The uncompressed size of that would be (using a YV12 colorspace at 29.97 FPS, that's 1440 seconds or about 43158 frames) 506880 bytes/frame * 43158 frames = 21875927040 bytes = ~20.37GiB. So, no, you won't be putting that onto a single CD, but for lossless compression of video, that's pretty significant. Even more space is wasted as the total number of frames and resolution increases without some form of compression.

I've been seeing more of these recently: Trash cans floating over what appears to be a flat surface with a X through the trash can. Talk about a confusing icon. I just assumed that it meant "floating trash cans are not allowed" or that the hardware should be kept away from floating trash cans at all times.

By the time people have hard drives this huge, I bet there will be even better lossless compression algorithms available for video and audio data. I don't know why someone would want to store huge amounts of A/V data WITHOUT using some sort of compression. It just becomes silly after a certain point.

Perhaps Mozilla could give a little here, instead of Debian. Hmm?

No, Mozilla has the right idea. Debian might be trying to improve Firefox with their non-Mozilla approved patches, but do you really expect Mozilla to want to support users with a version of Firefox that deviates from the official version? What's keeping any of those patches from introducing problems that are NOT in Mozilla's build? They could see a lot of useless bug reports among other things. This is why they don't want the Firefox brand associated with Debian's custom version. Mozilla's request is reasonable. I repeat: Why should they support a version of Firefox that deviates from what they use as an official reference?

The only unsigned driver I have ever seen was for an old Voodoo board.

I get unsigned driver warnings when I'm trying to install the LAME ACM or XviD binaries. Makes you wonder how useful these will be initially when people start using Vista.

Plus I have noticed there are a few well known hardware manufacturers (Belkin's rebranded USB Bluetooth adapter for one) that are intentionally shipping unsigned drivers with their stuff. Their installation manuals either tell you to ignore the unsigned driver warnings or the installer will automatically disable whatever protection Windows is using against unsigned drivers so you never see the warning in the first place.

Either way, it's not just going to affect people using custom or old hardware. It will affect businesses and open source projects the same.

Sony Media Games Via Opposable Thumbs, an article at GamePro in which Phil Harrison clarifies that Blue-ray on the PS3 is a 'game design' decision. From the article:

"Once we had that storage capacity on Blu-ray Disc, adding the movie playback functionality was extremely cost-effective, [the cost] is actually non-existent. So games like Resistance which, as a launch title, is up to 20-something gigabytes already. And that's day one -- think about four years, six years from now. We'll be pushing the 50 gigabyte limit with dual-layer Blu-ray very quickly. So we absolutely need it as game designers, and in that regard, the consumer is getting the movie functionality effectively for free."

I probably would have had a follow-up question there, but that's where the interview ends. So what do you think? Which came first for Sony: Blue-ray as new movie media, or Blu-ray as answer to design challenges?

They should have just called it Blue-Ray ("Blue Ray") instead of Blu-Ray ("Blew Ray") because it seems to be messing some people up. I saw a comment yesterday where someone was talking about Blu laser diodes....
