My upgrade plan is to migrate Ubuntu 16.04 desktop. I will not tolerate spyware as a part of an OS
In that case, you've got quite a few months to wait... In the meantime, Ubuntu 14.04 desktop is waiting for you... I'd move there now, if I were you....
You and me Both... After playing with the previews for a while in Virtualbox and then upgrading one of my Windows 7 licenses, and then watching what the OS blabs to via rpcapd on my router and wireshark, I'm soooo damn glad I moved all of my systems over to Linux when I retired.. I spent 25 years picking up after Windows (and the users thereof) that I decided my "golden years" would be MS-free.....
Hey AC.. You're not out of the woods with 8.1 (or 7 either for that matter).. MS is gonna get their telemetry crap on those OS as well.. Fortuantly, the updates you have to remove are well documented... Of course, since I trust MS as far as I can throw it, I have no hope that they won't try to get them back on, say by putting an update that checks for those telemetry updates and if they're not there, redownloads them... I'm beginning to suspect that MS is working hand-in-hand with the NSA to fill up that giant NSA datacenter in Utah..... Wasn't too long ago I'd think that my tin-foil hat was too tight, but no more...
This makes me wonder.. The company I worked for up to 2010, was a government contractor, and prior to around 2007 or so, every user machine on the network had a routable dhcp assigned address. I recall when we changed to a NAT''ed scheme for all of the workstations. I wonder if the several Class C assignments we *had* been using were reassigned or are *still* sitting out there unused.. I'm betting the latter..
IANA should start charging 1 $/year / IPV4 address; next year should double the price. The year after the price should be doubled again and so on. This should force the hoarders to let go of the addresses. At some point , it would be to expensive to stay on IPV4 and people would migrate to IPV6. The people who really need and can not move to IPV6 would have the option to keep IPV4 and pay.
At least one vps vendor in Holland (http://http://vds6.net/) charges $2/MONTH for one ipv4 address on their vps offerings..
I was looking for a vps that supported ipv6 to handle some of my learning ipv6. Found a great deal on an OpenVZ 256MB Ubuntu vps in Holland. The base price for the vps was... get this.. $3.99/YEAR!!!! This included one ipv6 address, but if you wanted an ipv4 address, that added $2/mo to make it $27/year.. Since all I wanted the vps for was ipv6 training/testing/putzing, I skipped the v4 address... This kinda tells me in financial terms that v4 addresses are getting scarce...
I'm using an HE tunnelbroker 6to4 to get ipv6, cuz CoxHSI... Using the fancy automatic shit to assign v6 addresses give you strange unrememberable addresses. So I set my machines to use a static v6 address and just use my/64 prefix AND the machine's v4 address.. Of course, since I only have a few machines on my home network, this is trivial, and certainly would NOT scale to anything larger.. Its kinda cool to post to a forum that shows your ip address on the bottom of your post and see an ipv6 addresss...Had to remember to mess with ip6tables to default deny on inbound.... I wonder how long it will take Cox and the other big cable guys to get their act together... Not holding my breath
I just provisioned a new phone on Ting, and in the GSM setup you have to do, you specify ipv6 on several settings in the configuration. Since Ting is an MVNO on Tmobile, I expect this would also mean Tmobile is also using ipv6 on the 3G/4G internet connectiion..
So...More proof that Bush was just as slimy as Obama.. I used to be an (R) but once I learned that both parties are spawn of the devil, I changed my party affiliation... I'M A FUCKIN' AMERICAN......
Yes, there is.. and you don't have to "buy" it... Its called Linux.. Of course, having said that, I wonder how long it will be before the "government" decides that anybody who is not doing their internet business with an "approved" operating system, namely Windows or Mac, will be marked as a "terrorist".. I hope I'm dead and buried by then, but the way the world is going, I wonder (I'm 65 y/o now)....
Or just use an OS that isn't a magnet for EVERY damn piece of malware out there.... Namely Linux.. The only Linux machine that I actually run an AV on is my mail server, simply because it hosts several domains that have Windows clients connecting to it, and I'd prefer to keep those customers email streams as clean as I possibly can.. As for my workstation/laptop, I don't run an AV, and would see no need to....
Its just sad that that payout is gonna come from the taxpayer, NOT the idiots who perpetrated this. Theres a large number of people involved with this that should be behind bars, and have their pay garnished for the rest of their life to pay this kid for this...
Perfect description of Windows 10... Sure, it has all those cutesy little toggle switches to turn off all of the fancy new "send_everything_I_do_to_MS" geegaws, but I certainly don't trust them to not turn them back on, by a new "update" or just because they're Microsoft and they KNOW whats best for YOU, citizen... I played with one of the later 10000-vintage builds, and you could turn off Cortana with the little "switch", and also go to group policy editor and turn it off there also, and guess what? you still have a Cortana process running, which comes right back in a second, if you kill it... Yeah... I'm gonna trust Microsoft.. I'll trust them about as far as I can throw them.... So glad I moved all my systems to Linux shortly after retirement...
You've just described Windows10 perfectly..... As far as I'm concerned, Windows10 IS malware/spyware.. Anybody using it, is either is not aware of this fact, or more likely just doesn't care.. I'm a retired computer admin, supported both Windows and Linux during the last 5 years before I retired, but after seeing how bad Windows 10 is, I won't let it anywhere near my systems, as they ARE MY SYSTEMS, and I don't care to send everything I do/say/see to Microsoft....
Especially when the Islam "holybook" teaches that all good muslims must lie/cheat/kill the infidel.. protip: you and I, in the western world, are said "infidel".. The only "safe" muslim is one who is a "backslider", one who doesn't believe in/follow all of the teachings of their "holybook"... a jack-muslim, if you will.. Of course, this "jack-muslim" is prone to being lied to/cheated and killed just like the western "infidel", by all of the multitudes of true muslims.... Seems like only a few in the western world actually *get* this...
I hope he gets a good lawyer and the police and school get sued. The kid never mentioned explosives, all that came from the fertile minds of the administration and the police.
Until lawsuits against public figures (teachers/police/school admins) comes OUT OF THEIR SALARY instead of the taxpayers pocket, these kind of idiotic overreaches will continue.
I run Ubuntu 14.04 on a Dell Precision M4400, and I'll admit the hibernation doesn't work 100% but ya know what? I have an SSD on the system and it coldboots in less time than it would take to come out of hibernation, so I really don't care.. For the VERY few Windows programs I need, I have a Windows 7 Virtualbox VM on the system.. After trying out Window 10 preview and seeing what a privacy nightmare it is, there ain't NO way thats ever gonna be on ANY machine *I* control....
When you have an SSD that boots Linux in less than 20 seconds, who the hell *cares* if it doesn't hibernate correctly.. I run Kubuntu 14.04 on a Dell Precision M4400 and haven't EVER hibernated it, as a cold boot is fast enough to not give a shit if hibernation works or doesn't work...
No, sparky.. they are only ONE of the villians in this story.. MS is the most egregious villian of this story.. To force a nearly 4GB download down EVERYones throat is so far beyond arrogance it isn't funny... Despite the fact that lawyers are the only ones who profit from class action lawsuits, I strongly suspect there needs to be one in this case.. Everyday I'm more glad that I quit using Windows in 2011, although I'm still gonna get asked to support it by my neighbors/friends who just can't get their lips off the Microsoft tit...
If you're already using 7 or 8/8.1, you're getting the same "telemetry" crap shoved down your throat, unless you take the time to research and remove those "updates" doing this bullshit, and THEN you have to trust MS to NOT put them back despite your removal/hiding them.. "Trust" and "Microsoft" are two words that have NO business together.. And if you think *this* is "way beyond arrogance" wait till you actually RUN Windows 10.. To defang/castrate it from all of the spyware "features", you have to visit regedit, gpedit.msc, to disable/remove this sewage.. Even after alledgedly disabling some of the worst of the lot, namely Cortana, you *still* have a Cortana process running, that cannot be killed... I'm a retired Windows support tech/network admin who retired in 2010, and moved all of my home systems to Linux in 2011. I've installed/tested Windows 10 on a spare "burner" machine simply to be familiar with it when friends/neighbors ask me about it or want me to help them with it, when it inevitably pukes its guts.. I used/supported Windows from Windows 3.11 (1991) to XP/Windows 7 (2010) and I'm DONE with any Microsoft product and thats my advice to anyone who asks.. Those who continue to use Windows are now members of the largest botnet in history. sending ALL of your business to Microsoft... I might as well go ahead and say it "FUCK YOU MICROSOFT!"
I suffered with using/supporting Windows during my working life, from 1991 to 2010, and I decided that, once I retired, I'd skip the hassles and malware vulnerablities of Windows and move my computers to Linux. Having started working with Linux in 1995, with Slackware, this move was not particularly hard.. I tried out the Windows 10 previews and thought it looked pretty good, but when it became clear what a privacy nightmare it was, and even when you were able to disable certain of the especially egregious parts of it, they continued to "phone-home" to MS, I decided then and there that I will NOT allow any MS OS on my home network... It just isn't worth it...
Nevada was trying to get Yucca Mtn going for nuclear waste storage, and bill the other states for storage of their waste, and I know there was some talk about doing an Alaska-style annual payment to residents from these funds, but our "village idiot", Harry Reid, shot that one down...
I bought one for my wife from Walmart for $30..she just needs a simple phone to make calls and run her Weightwatchers program on. Found out what a neat little phone it is and bought myself one off eBay used for $16... My previous phone was an old HTC G2, still on 2.3.5, and such a pain in the ass to root, and since several apps I wanted to use would'nt work on that old an os, and the ZTE had 4.X, I've switched completely over to the ZTE...
