As a caucasian American in my major (EE), I have always been in a minority. I'd estimate that between 60-75% of the students in my classes are students from outside the country: India, China, Indonesia, etc. Does this study even consider taking that into account? Glancing it over briefly, it sure doesn't seem so.
You can use Konquerer as your file manager while in Gnome. I use it for my Debian machine running fluxbox. The reason why I prefer Gnome over KDE these days is because KDE installs all this useless crap that I don't want on my machine. Seriously, some of their micro-apps are just pointless and a waste of space. Best example: "keyes". Who wants to run a program where two eyeballs are constantly following my mouse around the screen? Seriously...
"The best part is the "biometrics" toilet seat that'll figure out who you are based on your weight and prints the news you want - not your roommates tabloid garbage."
Sounds fishy to me. Its not like we weigh the same every day (some people like myself can fluctuate up or down 5 pounds a day). And of course when you are doing your business, that's going to change your weight too. It seems like this "identification" system would only work well if all the members of the household are of significantly (10lbs or more?) different weights.
This guide helped me greatly when I started out with Linux: Linux Newbie Guide. I didn't see it on your list. Ahh, I remember back when I started out and I had no idea how to install a program in Linux. I was like "WTF, what's the equivalent of a.exe???". This guide showed me the light.:)
I initially read the post as -- billions of genetically engineered E. coli growing in dishes of anger, and I couldn't for the life of me imagine how the scientists were able to know that the E. Coli were angry. I thought maybe they were working together to form insulting pictures to project at the researchers, like goatse or something to that effect. E Coli with attitude: now that's news for nerds!:D
Interesting. I'm a computer guy who will (hopefully) soon have his master's degree and I'm applying to get into the PhD program in neuroscience. I wonder if I could somehow make this into my dissertation.:) If I do, I'll be sure to give "mad props to QuantumG for the initial idea";)
I am sick and tired of your shady and misinformed "studies". Instead of trying to convince people that you have a better operating system, why don't you get off your lazy ass and MAKE A BETTER OPERATING SYSTEM!? I swear to god, my image of this company has been reduced to a 5 year old girl kicking and screaming because another girl in her class has a bigger lollipop. [/rant]
I'm actually considering abandoning computer architecture (what I currently study in grad school) and heading into neuroscience, because I find that research so much more enlightening, practical, and useful. Well I have many more reasons, some of which are deeper than others, but if I could spend my life studying ways to ameliorate neurodegenrative diseases like Parkinsons, I'd find a whole lot more meaning in that then spending years and years to make a processor thats just 2% faster on only certain types of workloads.
Absolutely no offense intended towards you EEs/CmpEs out there (hell, at this moment I'm still one myself), but I just want my time to be more directly involved in helping people rather than helping companies make a bigger profit. Ya know what I mean?
Why do they have the Intel Pentium floating point divide error listed as a bug? That was a hardware design error in the circuit, it was not a software bug. Of course it caused software to behave unexpectedly, but still I'm surprised that Wired put that one in there.
"When Windows first shipped, 20 years ago this month, it was considered nothing more than a slow operating environment that had arrived late to the party,"
Okay.....so how is it any different today? Viruses/spyware and/or anti-virus/spyware software continually slow it down, and all that Microsoft seems to do lately is copy the innovative things that its rivals do, so its still always late to the party.
Why would I want (or even care) to have 3D graphics on my mobile phone/device? The screen is already tiny. I'm sure 3D graphics are more computationally expensive and power-consuming than traditional 2D graphics. And in the end, I'm still just looking at a 2D projection of a 3D image. Its not like I want to be playing Half-life or another FPS on my cellphone. I'm sorry but this just seems stupid to me and I get the feeling that the only people who will want this "feature" will be the hard-core tech gadget geeks out there. Does a 3D API bring *anything* useful to the mobile table???
Well now hold on a minute. If M$ is trying to sell anti-virus software for their own products, then I think the complaint might have some merit to it. However, if they are just trying to add on anti-virus services to Windows to protect users (for free), then I don't give a shit about Symantec.
However, Microsoft has (not surprisingly) missed the whole point about offering better security for their software. MAKE YOUR FUCKING OPERATING SYSTEM SECURE IN THE FIRST PLACE!!! No one should have to tack-on additional software just so that their computer is at least moderately secure. I am disgusted at this because (to me) it means that M$ thinks that "security" is a program that runs on top of the O/S, instead of just trying to make the O/S secure itself.
Wait, so I actually read TFA and I didn't see any details here. If the hack takes out user buttons, what's to stop it from taking out all other I/O? How do you remove a virus when you have no way to actually get your machine to interact with anything in the real world? The symantec report says removal is "difficult". What if someone accidentally downloads this virus, then isn't able to use their PSP anymore because they can't wipe the memory clean? Who is responsible then? Does Sony have to give them a brand new PSP? Do they have to physically open the device and set a jumper to clear the memory? I want to know the implications of the virus, not just "there's a virus, and it's bad".
Hey, at least it will be a pentiful source of bait to go phishing with.:) Sometimes I wonder if the people who coin all these network/security terms are leading secret lives as professional bass phi^H^H^H fishermen.
I recommend you read this paper. It gives a great overall picture of what TRIPS is all about and is actually really cool. (I read it about a year ago).
I am an ECE grad student at UT Austin so I know quite well of TRIPS. In fact I often speak with Doug Burger himself because he's the faculty advisor for the UT Marathon team, of which I am a member. (By the way, his name is "Burger" not "Berger"). I think TRIPS is an awesome concept and its exactly the kind of project that I wanted to be a part of when I became a grad student at UT. I also know Steve Keckler because I'm taking his advanced computer architecture course this semester, and we're actually spending a good chunk of time talking about TRIPS (course schedule).
I saw the OGG torrent (and kudos to Harvey Danger for making a release in OGG format). The only thing holding me back from using OGG instead of MP3 exclusively is the fact that I can't play OGGs on my iPod shuffle.:( In fact, are there *any* portable music players out there that support OGG? God knows there should be!
Agreed. With less consoles, developers can spend more time developing games and less time porting games to multiple different consoles. On the otherhand, if M$ retreats from the market and the major players get down to Sony and Nintendo, unless a balance is maintained between the two, we may see a monopoly, which is not a good thing for anyone except greedy CEOs and stockholders. But I hate "console exclusive" games because I don't want to buy a console just to play one or two games I can't play anywhere else. And this next generation seems to be generating those types of games, because the architectures are so radically different between the three platforms, its going to be harder than ever to make porting of games cost-effective.:(
"Lua, a light-weight programming language made specifically for enhancing and extending games"
Wrong bitch!
Lua is *not* a language that was specifically made for enhancing games. True, it has a great use in enhancement and extension of games (in fact I use it in my game), but it is used in MANY pieces of software outside gaming. Here is proof.
For the bastards who are too lazy to click the link, here's a sample of the projects that use Lua (outside of gaming)
- Automatic configuration of network devices
- Heart Institute Monitoring Network
- CPC4400 Embedded Switching Platform
- Horus Alarm monitoring software
Unreal script is an example of a language designed specifically for games (or just a game in this case). Lua is not one of them. I would like to encourage the editors to check their submissions over thoroughly and stop mis-educating the Slashdot crowd. Of course, that's probably as likely to happen as Apple is to announce that they're switching back to PowerPC. We can hope, but it probably won't do no good.:(

This discovery was made when scientists found pieces of grass in fossilized dinosaur dung (coprolites)
Man, and I thought I had it tought digging through million year old crap (code) at work. I never imagined that would literally be someone's job >_>
...as when economics went mainstream. In this publication Alan Greenspan admits that he misses "the old scene".
So in other words, I should invest my money in retirement homes?

I guess someone thinks he's a little too cool to comment his code properly. Yeah, like "/* B2 */" tells me anything useful you insensitive clog!

They're already having trouble getting their site back up, and then you decide to go and slashdot them? Good lord, have you no sense of decency???
I'm not a Bush fan in the slightest, but I don't see it being the kind of thing a Democrat president would give a crap about, either.
Okay then...lets all vote CowboyNeal for president. >_>

I like how they call it "Web 2.0", as if Microsoft were the ones that originally invented the web. Gotta love that marketing department!
