I am sure if they wanted to they could show off the basic packaging.
I have two theiories as to why they are delaying:
1) Cell is a chip that is so complex that only now are they begining to be able to get half decent runs of. They are probebly more concerned getting those processors ready for the development kits then to make demonstration units of the consle. They could always show off the development kit, but it doesnt have the same appeal as showing the real consumer product.
Lets face it Cell doesnt need to be comercialy viable until the end of this year. With how radical it is of a design it will take some time to get the process up to where they have spare capacity and teach the developers how to code for the new architecture.
2) Due to the lawsuit with Immersion there is a chance they may be forced to axe the dual shock controler. If so you will see a controler re-design and perhaps even a port re-design.
It would look bad if they had to do another re-design of anything they show before their launch.
1) its extreamly expencive and you are forced to buy a bundle at launch
2) poor advertising, most people dont know what the PSP is or that it was coming out.
3) no must have game
4) reports of 6% defective rate from the japan launch. The claimed.6% was way to low as some stores have stated almost 10% of return rater in Japan after launch. (dead pixles, dust behind screen, defective buttons, UMDs poping out, even a few PSP fires)
5) people know better then to buy a Sony product before the first revision.
5) No must have game.
Lets see, Video Games are less violent then the evening news (where once in a while you can see mutilated bodies). 10th grade world history class (where they often have a unit showing the results of the Natzi concentration camps in detail... yah know the liberation video tapes). They are as graphic, though not as realistic, as many movies. Oh and they have the best content classification system in the world, as admited by groups against video games. So why are Video Games being singled out? I call it the Comic Book effect. And god forbid the parents take five secconds to look at the big lable that classifies the sugested age and content.
That should be added. The people who run slashdot say that there is no easy way to avoid this effect. Yet many point out that simply using free web chaching services could almost wipe out this problem with none of the side effects the maintainers of/. eroniusly claim.:p
Yes I am sure thats what a bunch of companies would love. Get all of their money seized by paypal in their holy war against abusers of their service. Ya see paypal loses money due to abuses by people so Paypal shuts down and seizes the money of the abusee or just a random suspicus looking person and makes profit that way.
I dont know why but the copy is actualy better then the real PearPC. It seems faster, has a better UI, and is a lot easier to use then PearPC.
Granted it doesnt support mouting ISOs outside of the first install, doesnt support sound yet, ect. However it is a lot better. I hope that the PearPC group can figure out what they did to make it such a better app then what they have.
They claim this is a G4 emulator. Pear PC emulates a G3 processor. Why dont you just do a simple comparison and write a file that checks to see if the additional improvments in the G4 processors are found in the emulator. If they are then Cherry cant be a blaintent copy because Pear PC revolved around G3 emulation. Find true G4 emulation, which would require quite a bit of a reworking of PearPC code along with a bunch of new code, and there you have the evidence that the core of the emulator wasnt copied.
The sad thing is that this makes the US Losers in the patent and genetics department. Chimeras are going to be made and I dont think there is a way to stop it. Like the rest of genetic manipulation, cell research, ect we need to regulate it not just put a stamp of disproval over everything.
Already the USA is falling behind in telcom, content distribution (thanks a lot MPAA and RIAA), internet technology deployment, and a number of other areas. Bottom line is the USA is suffering from a self emposed brain drain at many levels (especialy the government). Soon the only thing left we will have is our need for resources and military strength.
Ya know, kinda like in Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex.
The entire idea of Linspire is flawed. You combine the worst aspects of Linux with the worst aspects of Windows.
If people just keep on trying to copy Microsoft products and only see compatability as their main goal then nothing revolutionary is going to happen. Look at Linux. Most of Linux development recently has been trying to challenge M$ and get a simmilar look and feel. I am sorry but you are dooming yourself if your primary goal is to play catch up.
I am sorry but this "news" has been around since fall of 2004. We all knew xbox was going to be released late 2005. Now once you give us some half decent new information then you can post it to/. and until then keeps your submissions under control.
P.S. the Xbox 2 is not going to be called xbox 360. They were thinking about that over a year ago. Currently Xbox Next is the most likely title (since they dont want to use xbox 2 because people may think xbox 2 PS3).
The ability to find out if freinds and contacts are currently online playing Xbox Live! has been a feature since 3.0 which has been out since before Halo 2 launched.
So I wonder if this could be considered prior art (depending upon when Microsoft was working on it's development) or if Microsoft is the next target for a yahoo lawsuit.
Well this may be because Linux and the Mac cant be mass produced consumer products.
Remember windows deals with a few hundred million units to distribute, ensure compatability with hardware, give some ease of use and standard look & feel, and then deal with hundreds of thousands of tech support calls a day.
Linux does not have the common look & feel across distributions or even among programs in many distros. Also most companies wouldnt be able to handle the legistics of dealing with so many customers. Lastly the ease of use of Linux is still awful (even with Linspire). Dealing with things like Drivers (especialy video card drivers that are updated montly), updates (most distros dont have a good update and patching system), and installing of applications (which often install apps in odd locations of the file system and place the shortcuts in folders that break the navigation bar's system of classifying files).
The only way to get the avarage person without their own tech support member of their family would be to give on site service and support contracts for helping out with these things. Training classes would also probebly be required.
Buisness linux is easy, most distros have the basic buisness applications highly integrated into their installs and are mostly logical where they place the links for them. But once you add things like heavy multimedia use, games, ect you get into problems with normal people using it.
As for Mac the problem is the economics of scale. That is to say there is no scale when it comes to a mac currently. Microsoft and Linux has it easy, they dont run on propetary hardware systems so they dont have to also take care of hardware construction and design. As such Apple simply would find it hard to deal with suddenly having to deal with tens of thousands of units moved a day. They would also have to deal with support contracts (though they can outsource those). Since they have usualy only one source for each peice of hardware all you have to look to is the iPod shortage due to lack of little hard drives last christmas to see the problem.
On the other side Mac has tightly controled and integrated hardware which makes hardware problems less likely and allows almost all updates for the system to be done though the OSX's update system.
Now the problems for both systems is once they start getting more popular with the avarage consumer then the user becomes the major weak link in security (Current Mac and Linux users are rather well versed in their OS currently I belive). This with a larger install base will make these systems a target for Viri, Spyware, Adware, ect.
Now these are only a few of the problems with moving to another OS. To date there is no real alternitive for Windows users to move to on mass.
Lets face it the earbuds Apple includes are ok, but compared to what you can get for the price of the wired remote they are absolute crap.
Oh and Gates has always liked Apple, he kind of has a soft spot for it... soft as in he wont totaly destroy it but keep it alive to point to it as competition and remember the "good old days" (read less lawsuits against them).
I hate it when I go to sites that/. has linked to and cant do anything because of the/. effect (Which is basicly a DDOS).
