Interesting. Thanks for the feedback...I actually have the luxury of NOT having to deal with the actual transactions, which is nice. I authorize + recommend...the purchasing agents actually have to buy the items...but this takes forever...perhaps it's because of this fucked up PO system is the reason.

Ok now that I have your attention, I would like to point that although I can purchase from Newegg using my credit card for our school (which I will be forced to do unfortunately), Newegg will not accept PO's from our University, UC Santa Barbara.
I love newegg and buy plenty of equipment from them, for myself. However, they are sitting on a goldmine and I am forced to do business with the likes of CDWG, Zones, and Tigerdirect because of their policy of not accepting PO's from Universities.
I've called them a few times and told them to escalate this issue and address it to their management. They told me to go through a convoluted process, and obviously other people have come to this crossroads, so management never sees this issue come up, mainly because no one really goes through the process. If the Tier 1 customer service cared enough they should escalate this issue to their management, but unfortunately I haven't been able to talk to any management. Very fishy.
So after all my b+'ing, I still do business with them personally, nothing really beats Newegg.
Amen. You said this very well. People need to stop generalizing and throw out statements out there, rumors breed lies and lies create turmoil and unrest.
It seems to me Linux officially announcing that they will now have their own distribution of linux and make their own operating system should hold more ground right...?
What does interpunction mean? I couldn't find it on webster...?
I've already apologized to Zonk about my comments. I'm putting this issue behind me. Thanks for your reply, whoever you are.
Vorok I saw that...it is strange...I either missed it, or the editors changed it after I emailed them. I could've sworn I didn't see my name on it....in any event, I'm glad it's there...not because I care too much about it (although credit is nice), I'd hate for slashdot's integrity to get compromised.
thanks for the reply
take care

Is that how slashdot works? You guys take submissions from people like us and put your name on it? I didn't know slashdot worked that way...

NO. The sole aim of all this is to give credibility to the content. So all the hippies can give it a rest.
evil agent,
because people don't want to give up chocolate. they don't want to give up their suv's. because life doesn't work that way. you can't tell someone who commutes for 2 hours a day (of which the reasons to this can be discussed for hours don't get into that) to go to work to not drive. it's a very simple answer.
MORE POWER TO YOU!!!!
GO GO GO!!!!
hey if you guys are any good, i will come and see you live, which I think how most musicians should be paid anyway...TOURING...
cut away the middle man,the lawyers, all that crap, the future will destroy all that. the future is word of mouth...straight to the consumer, no middleman.
I went to a UC school, got a BS in a scientific degree, and now have been working at a UC school as a sys admin/help desk manager/special ops. I started out my degree as a Computer Science major, and couldn't get into the full major. My GPA was a 2.73, and the required GPA was 2.75, and they rejected me. I was not a lazy student, but I have to say I had trouble with certain classes, for instance....we had to program MANCALA for a lower division class which consisted of programming AI with C, and implementing a binary tree. somewhat implemented the tree, but the AI was hard, didn't get much support, and couldn't turn in the assignment. I wasn't the only one. However, I was one of the few students that refused to copy code from someone else, and didn't turn in someone elses work. Half the class would copy code...standing around printers, reverse engineering applets, what have you. It was disgusting. Bottom line is there were at least 5-6 'weeder' classes, and while 40% of the people who got weeded out did rightly so (lazy CS students who were in the major for the money), I think I was part of the 15% who REALLY had a passion for computer science, but didn't know how to ask the right questions and didn't know where to go for the resources to fully learn what I really wanted to learn in this UC institution. It was pretty tragic. Here's the kicker: almost half the students that did make it to the upper division did copy code among other things (heard some rumors about a few "CS babes" having slept with TA's) to make that 2.75 GPA cutoff. I guess I should have "worked harder."
What do I do now? I am a successful sys admin/help desk manager for the same school, doing IT work. I get paid 38K+ a year, not too bad for my first job, but I think you are right to assume that I didn't get in this field for the money, but I got into it because I felt very strongly about the science, about open source, about improvement in code architecture, about object design, etc..I do not have an engineering degree, but I am still young and I want to pursue an MS degree in engineering. However, my GPA really suffered from these weeder classes I spent countless sleepless nights studying, while my friends who partied all day got 3.4 GPA's because they were majoring in sociology or anthropology. Don't get me started on the inequities of engineering GPA's and arts major GPA's. Any engineering student will tell you there is no fucking way you can apply the same grading scale between Number theory and Appreciation for music. but sadly, they affect your gpa in the same manner...they're both 4 units.
what makes money: research
what doesn't make money: great teachers
the university system is geared towards research, not teaching students on how to be good engineers, sadly. the idea of vocational schooling or applied schooling is nonexistent. Frankly, with the money I spent in this institution, knowing what I know now, could have used that money in some good stocks, open up a fat ROTH IRA account, trained myself to be a master in a job that I probably would be making much more money out of...I could have been a badass programmer, etc. etc. Some people might argue that you need a degree, it makes you a well rounded educated person....really? I was already well rounded before I got to college...so I really don't buy the whole argument
"but if you don't go to college you will not be well rounded" Bullshit...if you are not well rounded by the time you are in college, any attempts by professors trying to shove well roundedness down your throat while you sit uncomfortably in a class of 400 will not make you well rounded either, so don't give me that crap. Plus if you love learning and have a lust for life, you cannot not be well rounded.
The university discriminates against undergraduates on all levels, compared to graduate students or post docs, or plain researchers who are enslaved by professors trying to get a name for themselves.
Professors really don't care much about teaching undergrads. My high school teachers were a lot more into teaching than most of
Instead of providing incentives for people to get on the net (more people on the net -> more transactions on the net -> more money saved -> people can buy faster, 24/7, so more money businesses), they're going to TAX us.
Boy these people sure have vision.
there will never be an end to free internet content, NEVER.
The internet will always be easier than driving and seeing a product.
doubleclick will go down not because people will block ads, it will get destroyed because doubleclick will not evolve to a better advertising model, context specific advertising, which people do use and will continue to use.
what people hate (and rightly so) are ads popping up that have absolutely NOTHING to do with the individual. This type of advertising will die out, much thanks to consumer demand. THANK GOD.
I work as a helpdesk manager/administrator at a major university.
I have to say I like the variety of people I deal with. We support macs; OS 9, OS X (jaguar, panther, and now forced to support tiger,), win 98, w2000,etc.. and have a pretty heterogeneous computing environment. Our end user base is very eclectic (as opposed to working at a company and being "nick the computer guy", so lots of potential to meet intelligent phd's, etc... Plus a college can foster a good learning environment. Benefits are very good, but needless to say, pay is not so good. Especially if you live in a coastal city where a decent 1 bedroom apartment costs $1100+/mnth. My boss is a network admin, and this helps quite a bit, as opposed to a business manager or a non-techie,. A good job environment also depends on the trust you build with the people around you. If people trust you, they'll give you the benefit of the doubt, and as long as you can prove yourself you can use open source apps like request tracker, openssh, linux distros, or whatever you like to get'er done. This is my first job after graduation from college, so I can't complain. However, unless you're a director/high level manager type, you can forget about saving money for a house, etc.. (of course depends on your location...).
Bottom line you can shoot for two things: you can shoot to settle and not expect to get any raises but secure your benefits, and a decent retirement package. OR you can be young, out of college, and looking for a good experience, pending you find a good boss that will keep pushing you uphill. If you're looking to make a lot of dough and want to do develop new novel software and products wth 80 hour work weeks, join a startup.

you are wrong. raid 1 improves read speed. identical pieces of data on 2 drives mean faster read access, but slower writes, than a raid 0 of course.
