    i learnt that water was fine in the microwave years ago the first time i had a cup of coffee go cold because i got engrossed in what i was doing.

    somebody strongarms microsoft into doing something they don't want to do. if it weren't for a certain government office saying they would switch to open office because of the open file format issue, this would never have happened. now if only we can get the officials to say they will only view porn in mpg or avi or whatever and get microsoft to open up its video codecs for all

    even though they are nice and unix, it would seem they are indeed borrowing from bills book of business practises of stifling competition. Hopefully as long as they have an open source version of something for their hardware though you should be able to avoid allthat dial home nightmare of microsoft products

    heh, at least they realise now. i'm surprised. i thought they should have modded it that way in the first place. guess sometimes slashdot is a similar to the playground where people wait for justification before they stick their neck out.

    of a bit from an old film i can't recall the name of. There are a group of people selling manure, and getting taxed on the sale of it. They argue that since they paid tax on the hay, the raw material was already taxed. "Taxed at both ends" (yes i know that wouldn't work in real life, it was a kids film and i was a kid, but the adage seemed to fit the article)

    The same reason they get annoyed is the same reason that when people ask if they can use the toilet in my house (instead of just asking where it is) i say no. of course nobody ever believes me. but the time can be long in an irc channel before someone with the answer isn't idle, so just asking may cut your waiting time for an answer from half an hour to 15 minutes. everybody hates waiting. and timewasters...

    look, i love open source software as much as the next man, and it's price really goes with my poor musician ethic, but to be honest, as the man said it's a work in progress. Configuring a number of audio programs to run togehter, such as a drum machine and a synth or sampler, through jack and rosegarden is a royal pain in the arse.And musicians don't want to code new bits to their software, they just want it to work. so for now i'll still keep that windows box that doesn't go anywhere near the net....gotta love reason and acid pro...and keep this freebsd box for the net

    one thing i never see in these arguments... ...which i think to be the most important rebuttal is this;
    linsucks is free if your time costs nothing
    so hows that downtime due to spyware and virus attacks ?
    seriously, once you know the OS anyway, it takes less time. the only time they are on about is the time it takes to learn a new skill. after that i qould think it would take far less time to admin a linux system. urpmi, apt-get anyone?

    my uncle and aunty let their five and seven year olds borrow gta:sa from someone and play it because they don't game, and to them gaming is all pacman and space invaders harmless. they did get banned from playing it though when they picked up the language quickly, like when angry at their parents for something, probably not having another mars bar or whatever, and onw of them remarked to his do "you're just a bitch"
