    It's going to be replaced anyway as it becomes obsolete...
    One example would be a Nortel OC-192 shelf from a decade ago. You can now replace the entire rack-sized unit consuming almost 3,000 watts with a few cards consuming maybe 200 watts in a smaller chassis.
    Equipment is getting more dense and more power-efficient regardless of what Bell Labs does.

    ...or you could bring the cost of nuclear down through cutting red tape for building new ones and funding research into more efficient ones and not punish the consumers who will be stuck with coal in the meantime.
    I guess that doesn't fatten the right purses though, does it?

    Synthetic corundum (which a ruby is) is already used in high end watches and it's scratch proof but even more brittle than glass.
    If you want durable you need plastic. It scratches easily but a thick layer of it really is pretty unbreakable. The scratches can be polished out of an acrylic but you can't polish a crack out of corundum.

    Google is not a major player in telecom, go ahead and nix that out of your conspiracy theories.
    Interstate fiber is controlled by traditional telecom companies that you have heard of and many that you haven't.
    Names like Verizon, AT&T, Qwest, Level 3, US Signal, and Zayo come to mind.
    I know there were rumors of google buying up dark fiber a while back, but the fiber is pretty useless if you don't have a presence in all the central offices along the routes.
    It might be useful along metro routes to connect their data centers directly, but there is no point in Google spending a ton of capital to build up an interstate transport network and enter an already competitive telecom market.

    I can haul four people and thousands of pounds of cargo (in addition to the thousands of pounds of truck) for around 15-18 mpg.

    Except most of the time it's just you hauling nothing but your own ass around at 15mpg.
    I drive my car any time I need to get something that won't fit in my side cases or backpack and last year I put 10,000 miles on the motorcycle and about 1,000 on the car.
    As for pollution, anything a bike puts out is insignificant.

    Apple maintains total control over it, sticks to their guns, and the product isn't bad. Google gives the carriers complete control, and it turns to shit.

    Wouldn't you rather YOU were in control of your own phone?
    That's what the Nexus One is intended to bring about, it seems.

    Nobody has ever demonstrated the ability to recover information from a hard drive that has been zeroed out with DD.
    Maybe it's changed lately but AFAIK The Great Zero Challenge remains undefeated.

    I'm just not accustomed to thinking of shotguns as a weapon against anything but fowl unless it's sawn off, has serials filed away, and is covered in brain matter.

    A functioning unix-like operating system is as easy as a liveCD or bootable USB image.
    I used to do this all the time at work getting computers ready for donation for charity.
    As a side note, /dev/urandom is pretty slow and it would take forever to fill up the drive. It's just as good to use /dev/zero and much faster.

    Using terms such as 'zombie', "decrepit" and 'unprecidented' without a shred of evidence makes me think that the article and the author have a bit too much bias to really believe.

    On the other hand, maybe they're onto something.
    Should I stop driving my 'zombie' car now that the warranty has expired?
