    Just kidding.

Seriously, if down the road someone hacks Linux onto this thing, I wonder if the CPU is compatable-enough with the G4/G5 to run OS X under Mac-On-Linux?

That'd be kinda cool, it a geeky sort of way.

LOL! When I first started working at my current job (in Nov. '99), I was asked to look throughout the office and pick which kind of chair I wanted. I saw a couple of Aeron chairs and thought they looked cool, and didn't feel bad to sit in, so I said "that one". I had absolutely no idea that they were so expensive until maybe a couple of years later!

I'm still using it (in fact sitting in it as I type this). It's OK, but not great; I'd certainly NEVER pay $700 for one!

At home, my old Office Depot chair finally broke after years of use (no, I'm not fat!) and I had to throw it away as it wasn't fixable. By a fortunate coincidence, I saw someone had left an inexpensive-looking office chair out on the sidewalk near my place, obviously to be taken away, so I snagged it! It was very clean and no stains or wear, just a little dusty and had a very slight "old-person" smell, which I washed out. I also had to take a couple of screws out of my old chair to put in my "new" one (maybe that's why they got rid of it?), but that's about it. It's been working great for me.

Why am I telling you this? That "throwaway" chair is MUCH more comfortable than my $700 Aeron chair at work!

As I see it, the Aeron's only advantage is that it doesn't catch and hold farts.

... at least as long as the songs didn't come from the Apple store. All of mine are ripped from CD's or vinyl to MP3.

The iPod's Music folder is hidden only in the Finder. On a Mac you can still get to it easily enough via the shell or an alternative file browser; go here:

    /Volumes/[iPod's name]/iPod_Control/Music/

There are a bunch of folders with names like "F00", "F01", "F02" .. up to "F49" on mine. The MP3's are under these folders. The filenames and ID's are still intact, so it'd be easy to import them all into another program.

If you want a nice GUI tool to do this, on Mac there is "iPod Access" and "iPodRip" (both shareware), and there is the free program "gtkpod", which I use on my Linux box at work to listen to my iPod songs.

Apple really doesn't lock you out of your iPod, which is one reason why I love it! Of course, mine's HFS+ formatted; is it hard to do this on Windows?

Personally, I would also like to see a smaller case if it's possible. The G5 case is a bit on the bulky side; its saving grace is that it's so damn cool-looking!

I'd also prefer more PCI slots; maybe most people won't need them, but how about this:

    • SATA card - there are internal drive brackets you can buy for additional internal drives to go with this.
    • SCSI card - for that old scanner maybe or ZIP drive maybe? My G4 came with one. (SANE-Twain is a godsend.)
    • Video capture card. Sure, there are external USB and FW devices such as the EyeTV, but having an internal card makes for a much cleaner desk.
    • High-end audio card. (Oops! not enough slots.)
    • Second NIC so that G5 can be a router/firewall for the cable modem. (Oops! not enough slots.)
    • PCI video card for more screens. Panoramic flight sim, baby! (Oops! not enough slots.)
Don't underestimate the geek appeal of lots of PCI slots. Not saying the G5 sucks (far from it), just that more slots would be kinda nice; it's certainly big enough to hold them.

Oh sure, crashes happen, but every time I've experienced one it's been due to bad memory or a bad (third-party) driver. Honestly, I've had more crashes under Linux than Windows these days (before Core 3, Fedora really didn't like my Dell laptop). I just see no need for such an invasion of privacy.

Personally, I think the real reason for this may just be better choreography in these higher-budget prequels; I'm willing to suspend a little disbelief here because I think the fights in the original movies were supposed to be good ones. That's all IMHO, of course and unless Lucas has addressed the issue, I feel this sort of thing is up to the viewer to decide, and wouldn't really argue it either way.

I guess the distinction I was making in my previous post was that he recieved the implants/prosthetics necessary to regain lost functionality, versus unneccesary replacement of whatever healthy body parts he had left (like Robocop).

From what you say about the novel, it sounds like Vader got about what I figured he did. He seems to have kept his torso, hence the need for the breathing apparatus and hyperbaric chamber to assist his damaged lungs (they're obviously still there). Since they didn't bother to replace his lungs, then he also probably has all his other major organs. In other words, unlike Grevious, he didn't get a full-body replacement.

The point about the emperor not wanting him to be too independant/powerful is well made; from what I've seen of Grevious (only a little bit of the Clone Wars cartoon), he doesn't exactly seem disabled or dependant on life-support in any way.

On the other hand, I have to wonder how vulnerable cybernetics would be to tampering via the Force, vs. someone who is all-original (force-induced short-circuiting vs. force-choke)? Maybe that gives Vader an edge. (For all I know, this may come up in the movie.)

Presumably it was General Grevious' choice to take that robotic form; perhaps it resembles his original, organic (non-human) body.

IIRC, somewhere in the Expanded Universe stuff I read that Vader longed to free himself of his "life-support" suit and regain his (physical, at least) humanity. Given that, I can see why he'd prefer to retain a huminoid form. Also, the majority of his body was probably still organic, with the artificial components there just to provide prosthetic replacements to lost limbs and life-support. He might have been pretty pissed if they had gone ahead and "Robo-copped" him.
