Lucas Confirms Star Wars spin-off TV series
Mictian writes "In a rare public appearance at the Star Wars Celebration III (his previous fan event appearance was in 1987), George Lucas confirmed that he's working on two TV series. One will be a full 3D animation series (with 30-minute episodes) of the recent Cartoon Network Clone Wars shorts, and the other a live-action series, that will be set in the time between Episodes III and IV, but won't feature the main characters. Production is expected to begin in about a year."

Rather than all this peripheral shit, why doesn't he crank out the last three movies?
I am afraid too much star wars and it might kill the interest of it completley.
Then again some might argue that you can never have too much star wars.

"...but won't feature the main characters."
This will be tough thing to avoid. I've ready quite a few Star Wars novels in my day and all of them have noteable characters from the movies sprinkled throughout the plotlines. I could see how they might avoid using main characters if they set the television series Pre-episode I or pretty far past episode 6 (post new jedi order?) but for the series to take place between episodes 3 and 4 would require a few staple characters to make regular apperances in order for the audience to become grounded.
I recently watched that amateur Star Wars fan film "Revelations" and without an appearence by Darth Vader, it wouldn't have seemed like Star Wars. The sets and sabers alone just don't draw me in like the cast of characters that everyone is familiar with.
Here's hoping that is an overstatement and we'll see a few familiar faces in the series.

that I don't give a rusty fuck what George Lucas says, does, produces, or otherwise shits out onto the screen.
C'mon people. He's not been behind a great movie since "Empire", and notice that he didn't write the screenplay for or direct that one. Yes, he made a few classics. He founded what is still perhaps the world's best FX shop (ILM). He got thousands of theaters to upgrade to a better viewing / listening environment with the THX certification program. However, he's crashed and burned badly since. Why keep giving him so much attention?

Well, I think as long as Lucas makes more of Star wars movies/episodes for the sake of making he can post for the sake of posting
Let's face it. The fire has gone out in the Star Trek universe. The TV series have seriously declined in quality, and the Nemesis destroyed the movie line. A Star Wars series would be a welcome replacement.
As Lucas (and the article) said, it's not exactly true that no main characters are going to be in the TV series (I think his exact words were "Well, that's not strictly true now that I think about it"). He didn't clarify what that meant though.
Also possible in the future is either a new Willow movie or TV series, and another thing for sure is an update of the decrepit Star Tours ride at DisneyWorld (in Janurary next year).

Without Star Trek for a while we were in need of a 800 lb gorilla fucking up sci-fi, nice to see Lucas stepping up to the plate.
In all seriousness though, what I've seen of the Clone Wars shorts looks awesome, though I'm sure that's more due to Genndy (and lack of serious plot perhaps), and a series not dealing with the movies has promise...but seriously. Is there any way that this doesn't get fucked up beyond belief?

George Lucas has successfully destroyed his creative storytelling gift with his business "sense." With JarJar and those terrible "romantic" scenes and explaining the force as the product of a bunch of little organisms, his movies are littered with these gimicky pop-up ads of marketing that have little to no place in the storyline. He even screwed up his original movies by adding a lot of unnecessary sounds and very obvious CGI, both of which just stand out too much in the re-releases. I'm glad they cleaned up the movie, but why add lots of new distracting and often irritating hi-pitched sounds? Because Lucas can milk the money train.
Timothy Zahn, a great author IMHO, made quite possibly the best starwar books ever.

I don't know anybody that is foolish enough to believe that this was over. As long as there is an interest and the opportunity to make some money, it isn't going to be over. Many folks thought that Star Wars would end in the 70s. It is still around decades later and still making a profit. You don't get rid of a profitable interest.
If the entertainment factor is there, I'll go see more. Will the market of 'Star Wars Enthusiasts' allow more movies to be made? Will we see different plots in the future? Will we see more 'enhanced' versions? I'd think probably. They may suck, but I would bet that we are not done with 'Star Wars' for quite a while. I hope that what comes out is good.
When are we going to get sick of it?

I think for the live-action TV series, this might be good. I would like to see the everyday life of people who live under the empire, with pirates and gangsters and all the other stuff that make up a regular world. As long as they stay away from the force and "save the universe" level plots, it should be interesting.

Sure, it seems impossible, but look at what happend to Star Trek. For years Trek fans were livin' large, with several shows to choose from, but now it's all going out with a whimper.
Hopefully Lucas will learn something from the Trek saga, and he won't try to keep a deathgrip on the creative process in the Star Wars TV shows. If fresh talent is able to come in and mess around a bit with the tried-and-true formula, Star Wars could thrive on TV. If they stick to what they've done before, it's a doomed venture.

We've got no idea at all what a Star Wars TV series will be like. Clone Wars doesn't count; the shorts are constructed completely differently than a longer episode would be. Ewoks and Droids don't count either; they were targeted towards children, and we've got no proof indicating that these will be. The Christmas Special doesn't count. What does that leave us with? Nothing.
You could argue using Young Indiana Jones as an example, but that was another series entirely. Beyond that, there are lots of other factors - there is more established Star Wars material, for example, or that YIJ was made more than ten years ago and tastes change over time. Hell, they aren't even in the same universe.
I think the best approach here is to wait and see what we get. How can we criticize what we've never seen? Shame fanboys never seem to pick up on that...

I remember when the first episode of J.A.G. came on and it was chock full of stock footage ripped straight out of Top Gun.
Hopefully Lucas will be smart enough to do steer widely from the current franchise. A total rehash of his previous works will likely be met with a ground swell of apathy.
I personally would rather get less Star Wars if it meant better quality work. Can the prime time stuff and give me the last three episodes over the next 9 years.

It is always painful to see an artist / athlete or whatever keep trying when they no longer appear to measure up to their prime.
But even if the artist's talent is no longer what it was, or the athlete is past their prime, its their choice to keep going or not. If the artist continues to enjoy performing, let him perform. If the athlete wants to keep playing, let him keep playing.
So as long as George Lucas is enjoying what he is doing, and making money at it, he should probably keep going. And if you dont like it, dont pay to watch it.
I for one admire that Lucas has kept creative control of his creation and is in a position to still profit off of it. I may not have liked the Phantom Menace, but its my fault for watching it, not his fault for making it.

Lucas hiring Genndy Tartakovsky to work on Clone Wars is one of the few things he'd done right since the Prequels. For me, the series exceeded all expectations - lots of Jedi action! This new development - an ongoing Tartakovsky series - can only be a good thing.

I don't think the Timothy Zahn trilogy are suited for a TV series. Think the x-wing series are much better choice. Not so much the novels, but starting with the stories from the comic books. I think they are much better suited for TV addoption, the Zahn books are more like movie material.
The Clone Wars cartoons are freaking awesome. THAT is what the movies should have been. I'd love to see a full blown TV series based on them.
...Lucas has constructed.
The writing is poor; the acting is mostly mediocre; the mythos of the entire series destroyed by making the force some sort of organic microbes, YET I STILL ENJOY THESE MOVIES VERY MUCH. Why? Interesting characters. (The music of course is among the best ever created, I am just taking that for granted).
Not deep characters, but interesting.
So....George's new TV show will not include any of the characters we have grown up with?
I won't commit to watching or not watching, however I no longer give him the benefit of doubt. I think my excitement for the series is inversely proportional to his involvement.

No, but it's a valid policy argument. Copyright is meant to result in more original works created than would be otherwise, but also to get those works in the public domain as rapidly as possible, which also results in more derivative works being created. Too much emphasis on just one of these goals unbalances copyright and results in a less than maximum public benefit.
Copyright probably shouldn't last for longer than 25 years. For Lucas, that would get him Ep 4 from 1977 to the end of 2002, Ep 5 from 1980 to the end of 2005, and Ep 6 from 1983 to the end of 2008.
It wouldn't prevent him from making more, it'd just put him on an equal footing with regards to those older works. Plus whatever cachet he could have as the originator of the series would always be in his favor.

The star wars universe is a great place to write spin off stories about. I've always enjoyed Clone Wars (the cartoon), and numerous books from Timothy Zahn and such. The comic books are very good too. You know, it doesn't really matter if episodes I and II are any good. It just interesting to see and fills out the story for third parties to write spin offs about.

THX-1138 was an admirable piece of work. Despite the fact that seemingly few even know of it, it's nonetheless managed to influence the interesting side of popular culture.
Nine Inch Nail's "The Downward Spiral" album, for example, opens with a sample from the movie even. On the other hand the Star Wars films have at times had a deleterious effect (the original---and actually Asimov approved--- I, Robot screenplay was trashed by the studio to a large part due to Star Wars . And for that alone, Star Wars actually robbed us of good sci-fi, not the opposite).
I find it interesting that, having watched the original version and then the directors cut when it recently came out, THX-1138 actually benefitted from the modern additions; it helps smooth over the production values (and is a treat to see widescreen), instead of, I dunno, changing details to make characters more kid-friendly and less edgy (*cough*).
Lucas started out with talent and vision; but mainstream audiences wanted none of that. Somewhat bitter, he created a little fantasy movie. Audiences loved it! He had learnt his lesson, and continued along those lines . . . but it would be nice if the old Lucas could safely come out now. It's not like spending lots of money on something that doesn't quite succeed will make all that much of a dent in his absurdly large bank account balance.

In "Labryth of Evil" (you can get it at the library if you don't want to pay hardback prices) it outlines that Grevious was actually a general for some race, not shaped like that though - he was given the body after a terrible accident destroyed the rest of him. Here's the spoiler - he's really pissed off at the Republic because he thinks they are the ones that ignored his species and caused the accident.

Guys, give the man a rest. Like everyone else, I have my own criticism of Episodes I to III (in particular, I'd have loved for them to target an adult audience rather than a kid one, but that's just my 'I've grown up over the course of the last 20 years' bias kicking in).
Lucas has practically made Science Fiction movies acceptable for the big screen, and he deserves a huge big respectful 'Thank you Sir' for that.
If you disagree with his direction, well, write and direct a block-buster genre-creating film and use the proceeds to create your own movie studio and make your own movies.
This doesn't sound like too bad of an idea.
Assuming Lucas can cut back on the melodrama and other crap that's plagued the new movies, this could turn out to be pretty cool. I'd love to see self-contained episodes that show the stories of average, ordinary "Star Wars citizens" caught up in a galaxy suddenly distressed by revolutionary warfare and political change.
What if we could see the empire's dominion actually forming (something it seems like the new trilogy is barely talking about)? The civil wars that would erupt on planets as communities clashed over whether to fall in line with the Empire or rebel? I mean, just imagine being able to view the transition from a Jedi-ordered galaxy to one where the Jedi "religion is all but extinct," with the exception of the whispers and stories and rumors that would just be starting to spread of one Darth Vader.
The idea excites me. With good stories and direction, it could really become one of the better creations of the Star Wars Universe.
So, basically: Please, Lucas... stay as uninvolved in the project as possible.
It's a trap!
If you liked Clone Wars, why do you think you'll not like the new movie? Especially season 2, which seems to be kind of a mirror in terms of content and pacing.
And the end of Clone Wars is the very start of EP3! Come on, get excited again - I think we are finally getting the Star Wars movie we were all looking forward to since before EP1. It just took him two movies to get the backstory in place.
There's a reason this movie is PG-13.
Also, if you liked the Clone Wars you'll probably like the book "Labarinth of Evil" set right in the same timeframe and even intertwined a little with the Clone Wars Series. It also ends just at the start of EP3.

I heard that Lucas actually forfitted the rights to episodes 7-9 as part of the terms of his divorce. That's why you'll never see those movies, otherwise, of course Lucas would try to cash out and continue his series.
Honestly, I can hardly consider Ep 1 and 2 to be Star Wars and Lucas has left so much plot for Ep3 it'd have to be 4 hrs + to cover it all and be any good at all. But I am sure it'll suck hard...
Does this mean the nerds will line up and camp out in front of their TVs?

Call me cautious, but I'll wait until Netcraft confirms it.
Speaking "rare public appearances", Lucas will be the keynote speaker at the computer graphics convention SIGGRAPH this summer.
Things Lucas could be doing right now... ...considering the wealth of options, how did he screw up this bad? And 2:1 says Jar-Jar makes the series anyway.
-Final Trilogy (Luke as Jedi Master)
-Shadows of the Empire (Boba Fett action)
-Podrace. I-Max. Think about it.
-TV Series w/ Luke as head of the Academy, rumored to have been seeking Mark Hamill himself and his comic-inspired friend, Kevin Smith (say what you want about Smith's abilities, he'd be 100% true to the source material... minus Mewes in walk-on roles).
-Any project that has no Ewoks and certainly no Jar-Jar.
Another question that came up in the same session was "isn't the series of movies really all about R2?".
Lucas said it was a really good point, that R2 was in fact a real hero across all the movies in cosntantly saving people and if you think about it is the only one to survive through all the movies intact (not sure why C3-PO wouldn't fit the bill either, but there you have it).

I really, really, want Mr. Lucus to make or Autherizse movies made from Zahn's books! Crazy Hope: Michel Mann (Las of the Mohicains) Directs!
That's what C3PO would say if he were here.
If the spif-offs have a story at the same level of quality as KOTOR, I would be ecstatic.
I don't see why it wouldn't be possible to create a spinoff without hiring Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman or Hayden Christiansen. The story could just focus on one of the many places affected by the the galactic wars, on a small scale level, for instance. That way I can perfectly see how they could create a story that's interesting from both drama and sci-fi points of view, and not feature any main Star Wars characters. What you said about main characters being sprinkled throughout Star Wars novels may still be true for this series as well; I mean they could mention an important event and a name now and then, but the character wouldn't necessiraly have to appear on screen. After all; that's probably not what the series is gonna be about; it's a spin off, not a bridge story.
I think copyrights should expire 5 to 10 years after the last day of use by the copyright owner. That way if something is abandoned then eventually it would be released into the public domain, but something like Mickey Mouse would be held by Disney for as long as they kept using him.
Then they can have Vader jump over some evil kind of "shark-like" monster....to get better ratings, of course
Compared to the other cartoons on at the time, I really liked both. If I remember right, the Droids show went off before the Ewok show did, and then they remade the Ewok show, making it simpler animation-wise and stupider...
Yeah, it was cheesy and geared for kids, but hell, I was a kid at the time and I really liked them...I mean, it was every bit as good as Transformers or that cartoon where they always called Godzilla to come and save the day - of course, neither was as good as Robotech or Voltron, but when I saw those I was a bit older and cared more for some emotional realism and drama.
These are not to be confused with the live action Ewok movie thing or the Holiday Special *shudders*.

There could be different opinions, but I believe the clone wars micro series have much more quality than anyone expected and to be honest they are WAY better than the recent movies (without chesy actors and cg special effects) so if they are making more thats sounds all good to me. They are extremely anime like (is from the makers of samurai jack after all) so it makes for a good combination.
Im worried about the live action series though. I have the idea it would look like "MK: conquest" for some reason. after all Star wars and low budget TV dont mix.
Go ahead MOD my day!

- The second and most ambitious project will involve a live-action series. He wants it to be similar to the serialized 'The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles' TV series he executive-produced in 1992. Lucas plans to film the entire first season all at once, with shooting to begin in about a year. Lucas says he will set up the show, but then plans to step back and move on to other projects.
I really liked the 'Young Indiana Jones Chronicles' and was disappointed when it was cancelled. Maybe if GL stays in the executive producer role for the Star Wars series, it won't be so bad. Maybe.Sig cancelled due to lack of interest
Seems to me that the Animatrix made a small fortune, so a television series for Star Wars seems like a good idea to.
Wonder if they'll rework some of the comics scripts.

Good to see that George's career is progressing quickly into the toilet. Now he's pitching more and more to TV and not feature films. He deserves it too.
Honestly, what I want to know is what happened between Return of the Jedi and Episode 1.

Let's not be excessively paranoid. Copyright has not yet been extended to Valenti's infamous "forever minus a day." So even after Disney and Sonny Bono's machinations, Beowulf still would have lapsed into the public domain one or two millennia before Gardner was born.
I can understand that the Bono Act is ridiculous and even sympathize that the Berne Convention's minimum of life plus 50 is excessive, but I don't see why it is unreasonable to at least wait until the creator's body is cold before suggesting his work should be in the public domain.
Things like the novels and comic books are not considered canon.
If you really want to be "informed" about star wars, visit that site. The site may seem like bullshit, but it is not. It's the real deal.
Like I said I've been visiting his site since before epI came out and he's always right. In fact, a lot of the fan ideas from that site are incorporated in epII and epIII. Lucas, didn't want to use fan ideas, even after epI sucked ass. But before epII went into production, he started caving and using fan ideas in the script(Fett being the biggest one, and the Yoda duel).
Your going to shit your pants when you see how good epIII is. Most of the ideas in this movie are fan based...reallly. That is why it kicks ass! Your going to see it at least 3 times, admit it.
This TV show is about life after the fall of the Republic, not about Anakin and his family and friends, though they have a major impact on the Galaxy. You will see new people and planets and how the "Rise of the Empire" affects everyone.
Did you by chance see last Friday night's Enterprise?
I've never managed to ge through an entire episode, after a few minutes of something so depressingl horrible, I turn off the TV or go watch some news channel to cleanse my mind with images of real world atrocities, to show me that there are worse things than destroying a beloved series.
I've seen the ad, I don't think I'd like it.
Much like DS9's best episode relied on using a lot of footage from a good episode from a better series, I think this too is only rehasing some fun TOS episode, and it's exactly good, it's only reminescent of something better.
You can't take the sky from me...
Then they can have Vader jump over some evil kind of "shark-like" monster....to get better ratings, of course
It was tried, but "Boba Fett jumps the Sarlack" turned into a fiasco.
it's just only available at movie theaters...
Although if that wer ethe case you'd think that R2-D2 being knocked out by the Jawas might have counted the same way! Or getting knocked out on the X-Wind at the end of Star Wars.
But it's true R2 was never blasted to pieces like C3-PO was. He was just a little fried.

That was a spin-off of a great movie series. Unfortunately, it didn't work on the small screen. Is Georgy writing and directing the new series? leave it alone, Georgy. Tell your story and get it over with.
Don't forget this one: I have fond memories. Here's the editorial review from Amazon.com:
Here's how critic Roger Ebert described the unique and lasting value of George Lucas's 1973 box-office hit, American Graffiti: "[It's] not only a great movie but a brilliant work of historical fiction; no sociological treatise could duplicate the movie's success in remembering exactly how it was to be alive at that cultural instant." The time to which Ebert and the film refers is the summer of 1962, and American Graffiti captures the look, feel, and sound of that era by chronicling one memorable night in the lives of several young Californians on the cusp of adulthood. (In essence, Lucas was making a semiautobiographical tribute to his own days as a hot-rod cruiser, and the film's phenomenal success paved the way for Star Wars.) The action is propelled by the music of Wolfman Jack's rock & roll radio show--a soundtrack of pop hits that would become as popular as the film itself. As Lucas develops several character subplots, American Graffiti becomes a flawless time capsule of meticulously re-created memory, as authentic as a documentary and vividly realized through innovative use of cinematography and sound. The once-in-a-lifetime ensemble cast members inhabit their roles so fully that they don't seem like actors at all, comprising a who's who of performers--some of whom went on to stellar careers--including Ron Howard, Richard Dreyfuss, Harrison Ford, Cindy Williams, Mackenzie Phillips, Charles Martin Smith, Candy Clark, and Paul Le Mat. A true American classic, the film ranks No. 77 on the American Film Institute's list of all-time greatest American movies. --Jeff Shannon
I totally agree with this review.
"Lack of technical competence coupled with the arrogance of power, as usual, leads to no good end."
I saw the M&M commercial the other night introducing dark chocolate ones: Darth Vader chokes the yellow one into submission. This has to be up there in the top marketing events.
Forbes has him at #194 on their list of world's richest people with $3 billion. I think that is a lowball estimate.

Here is the text of an old essay about GL that appeared on Salon a while back; I found it insightful. Helps to have a little perspective on why a guy does what he does:
By Jim Paul
May 18, 1999 | In August 1976, George Lucas was exhausted and desperate. He had been in London, directing the actors in "Star Wars," a film he had every reason to believe would fail. The usual turmoil and sheer labor of the set had been made worse by the lordly British studio unions, who quit promptly at 5:30 for tea, and by the money people back in Burbank, Calif., who in the end pulled the fiscal plug on the filming. At the end of 16 weeks of shooting, Fox gave Lucas three days to finish two weeks of work, a cost-saving move that appears at least ironic now that "Star Wars" and its succeeding films have gone on to gross billions. At the time Lucas had to hire triple crews and divide the stage into three sets, on each of which he directed the action for the final three days. "I cared about every single detail," he recalled (including the duct-taping of Princess Leia's breasts -- "No jiggling in the Empire," noted Carrie Fisher). By the end of shooting Lucas was pale, ill, ready to drop.
At that point he flew from London to Los Angeles, where Lucasfilm was headquartered in those days, and found that his special effects unit, having spent more than $1 million of its $2 million budget, had completed only three shots. Lucas was outraged. He made arrangements to assume control of the unit, then flew home to San Francisco, where he began having chest pains. He was taken to Marin General Hospital, diagnosed with exhaustion and held overnight. The next morning he took a vow. "That's when I really confirmed to myself that I was going to change," he told biographer Dale Pollock. "I wasn't going to make more films, I wasn't going to direct anymore. I was going to get my life a bit more under control."
George Lucas has more or less stuck to his vow. He has made more films, but at a distance, as a producer. The release of "The Phantom Menace" will show us George Lucas the director for the first time since the original "Star Wars." Indeed, Lucas also seems to have gotten his life "a bit more under control." In interviews of late he has described the last 20 years as being taken up with parenting his children and recovering from his divorce. But this puts a homey gloss on an astoundingly successful and labor-intensive enterprise.
Much that eluded him in the beginning is now within Lucas' grasp. He has amassed and consolidated his fortune (in the last 10 years his net worth has gone from about $25 million to somewhere near $2 billion) and made solid investments, so that now he can finance his films entirely. Never again will someone give George Lucas three days to do what should take two weeks.
George Lucas' gifts are difficult to categorize in conventional film-industry terms; he has defied Hollywood's expectations all along. In his early days as a rebel filmmaker, he made a student film called "1:42:08: A Man and His Car," which mostly consisted of a yellow race car doing laps at speed. Escape from and defiance of authority have always been a central theme for Lucas, both in his films and in his career as a whole. In his first feature, "THX-1138," the hero flees an oppressive, sexless, bureaucratic society, where robotic police give up the chase only when they exceed their budget for the operation. In perhaps his farthest-out moment, in 1969, Lucas was hired by David Maysles to shoot the Rolling Stones in concert at Altamont. (Pollock reports that Lucas "can't remember" whether he filmed a young black man, Meredith Hunter, being stabbed to death by Hell's Angels, as Mick Jagger sang "Under my Thumb.") In any case, Lucas continued to challenge the industry through the 1970s and '80s, when it represented the Evil Empire, and does so even more profoundly now, as lord of the manor on Skywalker Ranch in Northern California's Marin County.
Though he has said of directing "The Phantom Menace" that it was "much m

Remember kids, cap 'em & burn 'em when you see 'em - before Lucas releases the "enhanced" edition on DVD, and you're all crying because he refuses to release the originals...
What part of "a well regulated militia" do you not understand?
What would be greater than ending Star Trek and Star Wars together in a big space opera adventure with a comedy tone? it would be really hillarious to see Geordi La Forge to try to explain the physics of the Jedi Force to Jean Luc Picard...or Chewbakka and Worf sharing the same apartment. Han Solo as a Starfleet commander onboard the Enterprise would be a tremendous replacement for Kirk, since they essentially are the same character (and similar to Indiana Jones, too). Riker to make a move on Princess Leia...Yoda trying to train Wesley Crusher to be a Jedi...Councellor Troi going crazy from 'too much disturbance in the force'...the Enterprise against the Death Star...Q making fun of Darth Vader...Lt Commander Data assigned a mission with Luke Skywalker...the plans of Anakin Skywalker to dominate the universe by replacing the Borg queen...the possibilities are endless!
Why should George Lucas's property be in the public domain,
Because as the "Phantom Edit" of Star Wars Episode One has demonstrated, many people do Star Wars better than George Lucas can.
If Star Wars had been public domain 5 years ago, the huge error called "Episode One" wouldn't have happened like it did (because, at least, it would be competing with other Star Wars films from people who actually understand what was cool about the originals- like Kevin Smith, for one, or maybe Spielburg).
It will happen again. People will get used to EP I and II ( and III ?) if they are viewed as bad now. They will become history rather than something to complain about.
Lucas needs to take another ten year break before tackling EP VII, VIII, IX.
Maybe this is a good thing for Star Wars. Something will continue to exist for now while we wait for new, fresh storylines to fill in after EP VI.
What's the worst that could happen? Someone could write a bunch of bad stories that go nowhere and distort the future timeline of a beloved sci-fi series. It'll run a few seasons and get canceled over the pitiful cries of a few diehard fans while the rest of the original fan base yawn?
Baah, It could never happen!
There is nothing so silly as other peoples traditions, and nothing so sacred as our own.
How about... having a SHARK... jump the FONZE?!
So what you're saying is that you haven't actually seen it but you've already got an opinion about it that's set in stone? I'd rather not post any spoilers so just let me say that you really ought to watch it first and then decide how you feel about it.
I saw the preview and read the synopsis.
I knew the Show called "Enterprise" would suck before it came out, I knew as soon as it was announced. I knew because Rick Berman explained what kind of show he thought Star Trek should be in an interview in 1991 and I've seen him work his toward the apotheosis of his vision for a decade, and it was incrementally suckier and suckier. Why? Because what he wanted to make was not Star Trek, he want to milk the cash cow (his words) and he's used focus groups of trekkies to figure out the workings of the golden goose (his words).
I can see how rehashing the TOS mirror universe is appealing. They did that with DS9 and the people who didn't think DS9 was a huge piece of shit swallowed it up, I even watched a few of those eps... sadomasochist evil parralel universe lesbians are indeed fun to watch, but it was T&A, not good storytelling. I know I won't like it, even if there are genuine moments of goodness speckled in there, I know because I have systematically not liked what Berman has been spewing for years, so unless he's been replaced by his mirror universe counterpart, the trend will go unbroken.
It's not one of those "It'll suck" comment, it's an "it will KEEP ON sucking" comment. Lack of delusional enthousiasm, not ignorant prejudice.
You don't know me, so it's normal for you to judge me and my reasons without knowing all the facts, but trust me, if I do like it, I will be EXTREMELY surprised.
Maybe someday I'll watch it, in the mean time, I'd rather not set myself up for frustration and disapointment, again.
I'm specifically referring, BTW, to the episode "In a mirror, darkly: Part 1". No guarantees that part 2 won't fall back on polarity reversed time-traveling space nazi worm hole transporter buffer overflows to resolve everything, but part 1 was a glimpse of what could have been.
This is what I mean, you've enjoyed part one and are full of expectant positivism.
I am waiting for reviews of part one and two before I submit myself to another viewing of Enterprise.
A glimpse... but, by now you've been conditioned to accept something quite low on the scale of tolerability. Is it acutally "good", or does it seem that way because it sucks less?
You can't take the sky from me...
Actually, ROTJ was held up by the strengths of the other two movies. You know, the old "two out of three ain't bad" rationale. And in fact, as a trilogy, you could overlook the ewoks and bad story because the first two were that damn good.
But now, if you look at all the moview, you have 2 good ones and 3 bad ones. Now all of a sudden, the truth comes out. Lucas got lucky with the first two (or they were good despite his involvement). Once he fully took over the reins, the franchise (in the truest sense of the word) took a quality nosedive. Sure, he still made tons of money, but the movies were terrible. Now, I don't consider the trilogy to be that great, I can weed out ROTJ because it fits in better with the other crap he made.
So you are right that time will tell, but not in the way you thought.
My beliefs do not require that you agree with them.
I have a copy of the paperback and searched for other copies (pre-internet) to no avail. It's pretty easy to find copies now, but for a long time friends & I assumed it was pulled by Lucas, et al. as an unacceptable fork in the plot.

Your complaints about being offended offend me.
But 3PO was a coward.
He survived by running in fear from everything that could cause him harm,
R2-D2, on the other hand, bravely charged into the action. (and was fried no less that 3 times, once per each of the original movies)
No, don't retire. Pick up the THX 1138 thread and run with it. Make the movies Star Wars prevented you from making.
Yeah, where is my damn Howard the duck prequil? Do you know how long I've been waiting for that film?
HA! I just wasted some of your bandwidth with a frivolous sig!
I first heard of this legend in 1980 in Time Magazine's cover story on Empire Strikes Back. That Time article is here. I'm not subscribed, so I can't read it all, so I can't remember if they quoted Lucas directly, but they definitely said there would be 9 episodes and that only R2 and C-3PO would be in all 9.
Mention George Lucas and all of slashdot begins acting as if they could do better.
Puhlease.
Get back in line, because you know your stupid asses are the first ones that will be paying to see his stuff, regardless of what you're posting behind your secure anonymity.
We have secretly replaced these Slashdot mods' sense of humor with a rusty nail. Let's see if they notice!!
To see Han shoot first, you can buy the original Laserdisc or VHS tapes on EBay. Good luck finding a copy that doesn't say "A NEW HOPE" in the opening crawl, though. It was added while the movie was still in theaters. Regarding the "Special Editions", I liked the FIRST attempt at the new Jabba scene where Han steps on Jabba's tail. They changed Jabba's reaction to this on the new DVDs and it's not as funny. They made him too dark in the DVDs, too. To me the "Special" ESB is actually an improvement, because Lucas doesn't monkey with the action in the scenes, he just visually enhances them. But, I HATE the new musical number in Return of the Jedi. The old song was way better. Lucas could have just CGI-rendered Sy Snootles, but no he had to change the whole song and add a character covered with unconvincing CGI hair. And now, one of the new TV shows is going to be a strict CGI remake of the Clone Wars cartoons? They can re-use all the work they put into rendering the Star Wars universe for the movies, so shouldn't there be some budget left over for some scripts? The live-action show sounds promising. I'll take a weekly dose of lightsaber action, hell yeah. Much preferred to waiting for more overstuffed movies that would take place after the main story's done.
No, wait... that was Lucas.
I remember in the 80's seeing made for television cartoons DROIDS and some ewok movies. They didn't seem to last very long or go anywhere. I wonder why he thinks this time will be any different. Someone once said, "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results." Can this be submitted as proof that the all powerful Darth Lucas is off his rocker?
It's easy to stand out when the general level of competence is so low.
Heir to the Empire would be an excellent 3D cartoon. But the story is already known, and the actors are too old to portray themselves now.
Lucas commented more than once that he wanted his actors "aged". It could very well be that George is lying, that he actually WILL make VII-IX. But he will take a brake before he does it.

Lucas SHOULD be doing a TV series for the WB in "Buffy/Smallville" style about Lukes teenage apprentices (a much older Luke).

The best move could be another young "Harrison Ford". Find another young actor destined to die from a drug overdose and tell the "Han Solo" story.

Hey the fans are the ones who invest so much of their life in a fictional story in the first place. If they want to be angry at anyone for being dissapointed, they should be angry at themselves for writing their OWN scripts for future movies and not liking what Lucas had planned.

It's called the evening news as of the last 5 years.
My observation is that most people who don't like the prequel backstory are conservatives. They simply can't see how a smiling congenial man could be evil spawn intentionally tearing his own nation apart and setting his enemies at each other's throats so that he can take all the power for himself. And all the while, the people LOVE him for it.

And where does this leave George Lucas? That's what you're not remembering, it's HIS stuff.
That's a circular argument. It's only HIS stuff because the long term provided by copyright law makes it his. We are saying that copyright should be shortened with legislation.
Your objection makes as much sense as: "Because alcohol is illegal, Prohibition should never be repealed"
And where does this leave George Lucas?
Hypothetically, if copyright lasted only about 30 years, it would leave George Lucas with the $3 billion dollars he's already earned over that time period. In my opinion, that is more than sufficient compensation for his previous artistic works.
Giving him more money will not make Star Wars any better (in fact, maybe if he had less money, he would've focused more on making Episode 1 a better movie)
He looks like a wookie/turkey
