Actually I think that Fedora is pretty user-friendly. I've loved the Redhat distribution ever since 5.1 (I think). I still love the "user experience" of Fedora, meaning its GUI for preferences and system settings, and the programs menu.

It's unfortunate that some fundamental things about it suck to the point I'll sadly be forced to abandon it.

They've moved from simple config files to cryptic and often compressed XML files for no good reason that I can discern, making it a pain in the butt to edit certain configs from a terminal.

As far as I know, you still can't edit the Gnome menu from the GUI without doing a flakey hack.

The worst thing is that they cut off updates for each release when the new one comes out every six months. Upgrade installs are unreliable and leave out new features, meaning you have to do a fresh install every six months! This is unacceptable to me, and is what will, sadly, cause me to switch to something else.

I've used Suse before and liked it; I'm just too cheap to pay what they wanted for it each time a new version came out, and the FTP install never seemed to work for me (I kept losing my FTP connection during the long download). I look at OpenSuse with great interest - it just might take Redhat's place as the "good" free Linux distro with business support.

About seven years ago I visited my girlfriend's family in Japan; while there, we visited the Sony building in Osaka, where they had a lot of new technology on display. One item of great interest to me was a set of glasses like these that attached to a portible DVD player, and make the screen appear as if it were a big screen tv across the room. I watched part of "Terminator" on it and thought it was way cool.

For a year of two after that I wondered why those glasses still hadn't shown up for sale anywhere, until I found out that a significantly large percentage of users developed splitting headaches after a while of using them, so much so that Sony pulled them from the market. I don't know if these will fare any better.

(Maybe I'll check ebay to see if any of those old Sony classes have shown up there; I'm willing to take the risk.)

OK, I think we're in agreement! As I stated, I didn't read the (sensationalized) article, but it did sound like this guy was advocating the elimination of firewalls altogether and forever, which would be stupid.

My own approach has been as you said, pretend you don't have a firewall when setting up your servers. Anyone who does otherwise (in a business environment at least) deserves what they get. I wouldn't take down my firewall either though, even for testing because bugs happen, in servers and in firewalls. Maybe I have a better imagination than most, but I have no problem pretending that the firewall isn't there and acting accordingly. Or maybe it's my paranoid nature. :)

This sounds like another one of those "nothing to see here, move along" articles.

OK, I haven't read the article (I'm on Slashdot, after all), so maybe I misunderstood the article post (they are often misleading). What the hell is wrong with having multiple layers of security? That's what's been preached for years now, and it makes sense,

Of course one should strive for having one's servers secure enough to stand on their own in case someone breaks through the firewall, and also because attacks can come from within. You don't need to remove your firewall to do that, however; use your imagination! What happenes if there's a flaw in the server's built in security? Bugs have been known to happen. Paranoia becomes a wonderful trait when you're dealing with network securiity.

So a firewall is that much extra work; boo hoo!

Please, please, please let's not resurrect the ancient "Atari vs. Amiga" flamewar!

Way, way back in the mid 80's, there was a big computer show in my town's mall (Mt. Shasta Mall in Redding, CA), where all of the local user groups participating had their computers on display.

I stopped by the Atari display, a large square-shaped area enclosed by tables with various Atari equipment on them. Some guy was demoing a hardware/software device for the Atari ST call the "Magic Sac" (God, I love that name: "I've got a Magic Sac, baby!").

The Magic Sac contained a Mac Plus ROM and allowed you to run System 6 (newest at the time) on your ST in 640x480 mode. I thought that was pretty cool, and asked the guy a lot of questions about it, which he was happy to answer. Then, at some point in the conversation, he asked me what kind of computer I had; when I answered "an Amiga 500", without another word, he turned his back on me and walked away.

WTF? The thing is, I actually liked the Atari!
