Look, I've loved google since the last century, but this is getting ridiculous. Do they have to own everything? Can't us mortals have *one* toy of our own to play with?
And now that google owns it, it'll be invitation-only for the next two years, and it'll be stuck in beta 'till the end of time.
Gosh, I hate to knock a group that donates thousands of hours to a cause, but I have to say that I've done installations of 7 or 8 of the major open source contenders, and Drupal is by far the ugliest of them all. I mean, the themes range from the ever interesting little-box-column-left/big-box-column-right all the way to the very exciting big-box-column-left/little-box-column-right.
And, the default install is about as bare bones as it gets. You have to install, configure, and tweak a bunch of additional modules just to get basic functionality that's on par with most other CMS default installs. That's fine if you *enjoy* tweaking just for the sake of tweaking, but I'd rather go right into tweaking my content, rather than spending hours and hours just tweaking the install.
daveschroeder said "Sending information to Apple" implies that it's kept, tracked, logged, or aggregated somehow. I submit that it is not.
By definition "sending information" (via the internet) means that it's kept, tracked, and logged. How do you think your information finds Apple? In the 80 milliseconds it takes to arrive at Apple it's tracked and logged by at least 4 or 5 gateways, and that's before it makes it to Apple's servers, which then log, analyize, track, keep, and forward your information to other appropriate servers within Apple.
I'm as much of a rabid mac fan as the next guy, but to imply that data sent over the internet remains anonymous and unexamined is just plain wrong.
I'm all for the little guy, but to be fair it's hard to take the charm offensive against 10,000 ranting blogs. And the worst part is, unlike Slashdot, the real world has no moderation!
Wow, I read up on rootkits. Amazing. And hacker defender reads like a manifesto on hacking PCs.
As I Mac user I keep hearing about how much more secure Macs are than PC's, and sort of believe that. But in reality, what is the true security of a Mac vs. a PC? I mean, I *want* to believe I have the more secure system, but complacency is the surest way to hack a system. So, anybody know the real deal.
If a Mac hacker was as motivated as any PC hacker, could a rootkit like hacker defender be installed just as easily on a Mac?
If our use of solar gathering devices increases to the point where some small, but statistically significant, portion of the earth's surface is covered by solar gathering and harnessing, thereby reducing the amount of solar energy reflected and converted to heat, do we actually have a net improvement in the global warming situation?
I'm genuinely curious. I just have no idea of the math involved, so I'm sure my estimation of the impact is wildly off, but I thought someone here must know, and I was curious.
I like the idea of music videos - I think they would be a cool substitute for cover art. I think the songs should still be $.99, though, or maybe $.10 more. How many times can you watch the same little video? I'd pay a dime for the novelty.
Wow, what an azzhole. Sounds like you've got that amd stuffed so far up yours only the mouse is hanging out.
Actually, Macs make fine game computers. Yes, yes, I know they're not the 1337 machines you kids are all into these days, but they do a darn fine job. And no adware. And no spyware. And no microsoft. And no bluescreen. And no hardware issues. And no...
Yeah, design, whatever. More importantly, what about gaming? Games treat the current dual-cpu's as distinct cpu's, and usually wind up using only one of them. What a waste!
Can the dual core cpu bind together and act as one cpu? Where the game passes the instructions on to the pipeline manager, or whatever, and can't actually see the distinct cpu's, but just sees one very fast cpu?
I think my biggest complaint about dual (or multiple) cpus is that software has to *explicitly* talk to each cpu. So, most of the time my uber dual cpu is sitting there half unused. What use do I have for a quad if 3 cpu's sit there idling?
So, let me get this straight. You're saying you'd like to crash a plane into a building and kill thousands of innocent people simply because somebody thought up a geek version of a printer? And you're the one sitting here reading all about the geek news, and then you say you want to kill us.
I'd call you an asshole, but then you'd probably fly a plane into my house.
Nice to see the terrorists are living here in the U.S. and reading slashdot.
The future of internet is encrypted internet.
Well, that link crashed both safari and firefox. Looks more like a browser killer to me.
Great, so now watching TV is equivalent to snorting cocaine?

FYI, if you anagram Podcast, you can come up with 'Stop a CD'
Brilliant! This is exactly the kind of unexpected approach to a topic that makes slashdot so enjoyable.
Hi. Does someone know more details? The cnn article says "In 2002, a jury found in favor of NTP and awarded the company $23.1 million in damages."
Then, in 2003 "a district judge increased the damages to $210 million."
Then, last December "RIM settled with NTP for $450 million."
Now, RIM wants to settle for the $450 million, but "a new settlement could cost as much as $1 billion."
What's going on here? Is RIM not paying? Is NTP not accepting their checks? Seems odd. Just curious.

I hope this is real and not vapor-ware. I've been waiting for instant start for 20 years.
How is it that Apple is beaten up over this, yet norelco shavers get out of this whole mess without a nick? (hehe, sorry, couldn't resist)
Seriously, though, norelco's been pulling the battery scam for a long time. Can I start a class action suit?
I thought crocodiles were badass, but even their *immune system* can kick your butt!

Since when does a wanker who moans yet again about the u.s. using an intuitive and meaningful measurement system get modded as "Interesting"?

Well, all the fun and work you care to have.
Good day sir. I said, good day!

What would you want with you if you could only have one thing on a deserted island? ...
Why, a printer that prints food, of course!
