Who teaches Civics?
US Public Education
What do they teach?
I was in a class three years ago senior year in HS. Let me tell you...they tell you the system is perfect, has always worked, and always will work. We weren't taught how elections work, primaries, voting...Anything...
I did have one great teacher that had us read and reread and study and debate the constitution. I'm exceedingly grateful for that...
I think Gravel would agree as well.
I know he isn't taken very seriously, though I think he needs to be. What kind of country are we that disregards a person just because they are angry and aren't afraid to show it...
We should be angry! Pissed off! Utterly enraged!
The National Initiative would solve a few issues. Raise a few more I'm sure, but it would be aq step in the right direction
Kucinich, Gravel, Nader...
Or the hundreds of smaller candidates?
Not voting is not a solution...
There area few decent candidates. They're just a bit...buried at the moment.
Let's not forget about the terrible cost of industrialization in China!
Their environment in many urban places is being DESTROYED - utterly.
Even if China becomes the next superpower, it's going to have serious health, economic, and environmental concerns to contend with.
My question is, besides Linux, who's in a position to take it? Sure, Nintendo is beating the pants off MS in the gaming arena...
But OpenOffice hasn't made much headway...
Firefox has done OK but I think we all would've liked to see more growth...
So...how does one usurp the OS market? Is Linux ready?
Umm, no. Actually, the President had an INCREDIBLE approval rating after Sept. 11 as our mighty cowboy led us in a war or terror....
What percentage of Americans supported the invasion of Iraq at first? A TON. I'd guess at least 75%, likely more.
So...No, generalizations are not THAT easy.
Umm. White House Crowd Control Manual.
Nobody said Democrats don't do it, did they?
Did they?
No?
Of course they do. It's still wrong and disgusting. We yell about Bush because he's there and doing it NOW.
What, do you want us to preemptively bitch at Hillary for doing the same thing before she even does it?
Jeeze...
As a white member of the denomination Barack is part of, and someone who has attended many services, known many of it's clergy (including head pastor, and been friends with many members, I can say the church he belongs to is anything but racist.
Yes, they are strongly afro-centric. But white people CAN attend (and are welcomed warmly), as well as join.
So before going off, why don't you seek to understand WHAT they say and believe? Or is tossing out insults and soundbytes just too easy and convenient?
I spend a lot of time on Youtube...I love how you can find just about anything on there.
I think that this, especially revenue sharing, concept could really revolutionize media on the internet. Or at least move it to the next level.
Think about it.
The big "series" carried on youtube, which I've never watched, have HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of views...The Youtube Celebrities have a shot to, well, make some money off of something that they have a passion for.
This will change things for some people. Interested to watch...
This is an insane idea.
I'm sorry, but there's little need to have my AP History or English teacher have a strong College Math background.
Some math? Of course!
But Calc II? That's nuts. Good teachers are in their field because they have a passion or skill for it...
Heck, most of the English/History teachers I've had probably couldn't solve Algebra II problems anymore...
Plenty of people are great writers, thinkers, etc but simply cannot handle advanced math.
As for the hatred of math, well, lots of people hate math. Mostly because they had lousey teachers or just could not understand it...And most children will simply hate that which they do not understand.
I doubt there's some liberal arts conspiracy to turn children away from math though!
Or having to shoot someone else...
Why not have similiar programs for peace and constructive purposes? I'm serious too. Expand the Peace Corps drastically. Create an international team of diplomats. Educators. Engineers.
Create a massive CONSTRUCTIVE program for once, and watch how the world's perception of US changes. If we were to shift 1/3 of our military budget into something more peaceful or constructive, I guarantee that our perception around the world would change. Better yet, American's perception of themselves would improve as well.
Exactly. Isn't this just Microsoft trying to get the open source world to play by their rules.
Remember, one of the few ways Microsoft can take on Linux is to embrace first. Sue second.
I'm really not sure. Maybe Microsoft actually wants to work WITH us on this one. I'm not holding my breath.
If all questions posed to politicians, especially from the media, were so specific, pointed, and intelligently worded, then I think we'd have a vastly different perception of the world.
Nah, we'd have a vastly different world.
You may find it intellectually lazy to believe in something that cannot be proven. Perhaps it cannot be proven TO YOU. That doesn't mean others haven't experienced something outside your experience.
You're being disengenuous and rather fundamentalist about this entire thing.
Not to mention, since when does spirituality mean one does not think? You're branding all spiritual people with the same iron, and this is simply crazy.
It's bad enough you're grouping Unitarians (who may or may not be humanist), Christians (progressive and fundie), Buddhists (in all their many forms) and all other spiritual/agnostic/religious people into the same category without respecting (or making any attempt to understand) the intricaces laying therein.
What's wrong - is the world too big for you? The idea that something cannot be explained now or in the near future by science scare you too bad?
I wholeheartedly disagree. Do you argue that different cultures do not view the environment differently? That some do not have more respect or concern for it?
Because that's not racism. Race and Culture are two different things. Two wildly different things in some cases...
It is true, however, that saying "Native Americans were environmentalists" is a bit of a stereotype - I suppose pointing to specific tribes or groups would be far better.
Why not just use a Standard format?
RTF was a godsend when I was in middle/high school. Why? Every computer I ever came across could read it with no problem. Sure, you don't get a ton of flashy graphics/fonts. But 99.9% of the time, people struggle with plain text type documents.
Or, why not just use ODF? If I were a computer teacher, I'd take a few minutes to teach the kids about file types, open vs closed standards, etc. Use Doc if you want, but ODF will always work between school and work. SOmething to that effect...
You'd be AMAZED how pissed off young people get when we find out someone is trying to control their information/computers. At
I'm sorry, but when a rather small DIVISION of a company can post a LOSS of $2Billion and not even phase the company, it's a sign that, well, some companies are simply too big or too comfortable, and normal capitalist/market forces simply are no longer working...
Yes, because everything the man says is completely wrong. He, being human, fallible, biased is completely unable to come up with anything true or insightful. Because of course, you being a poster on/. are inclined to believe that you're somehow better or more perfect than anyone else.
Simply because you disagree with him on whatever doesn't mean he can't make a point. It's your problem if you can't handle that.
Not to mention, the guy had a VERY strong point when he said that. Rather than just attacking me for using the quote, why don't you actually do something intelligent and attack the quote itself if you have problems with it? Or...do you not have a point and therefore need to attack the man himself?
"Why is it the government and media wants us to hate France? Could it be that they're afraid? Afraid we might like the way the French do things?"
-Paraphrased from Michael Moore "Sicko"
This broadband/telecom mess is just another crack forming in the US that shows just how truly broken our system - economic, government, and otherwise - truly is. We in the US have always liked to claim we're the biggest, fastest, best, most modern etc - the reality, many of us are learning, is very very far from what we're told.
Well, it's actually kinda easy...
First, you should of course never open an attachment you don't know is coming. Period. Even then, I'd be overly cautious. For most personal users attachments aren't important anyway.
If you start receiving e-mails from the fbi saying "Open this!" - well, screw 'em. They're supposed to call you or visit you in a shiny black car.
Even if I have committed a felony, you're still not going to see me open an attachment from the FBI...actually, ESPECIALLY if i've committed a felony!
Maybe if I was too curious I'd open it in Linux, perhaps in a sandbox of some sort that's locked down and read only. Heck, do it with a livecd distro with no HD in the box.
Or you could just skip a few counties and open it on a public library terminal:)
You're sick. Or ignorant. Probably both.
Where do you draw that line?
Should I pay for treatment for you if you have some sort of recessive genetic ailment? After all, it's not MY fault your genes suck...
Or if you're injured at work because you have a risky job. Well, it's not MY fault you chose to work there...
What about someone who can't work 40 hrs a week, because they're unskilled. So they're stuck at 30 hrs a week at Wal-Mart, maybe another 30 at McDonald's or Wendy's. But they had a box fall on them and broke a collarbone. Ah well. They should be smarter. Should have gone to college.
Blah blah blah. The point is society as a whole is injured when this happens. Period. People who do work but can't afford care will lose their jobs. Then they'll slip into the welfare system you're already paying for.
I remind you the US already pays more per person on healthcare than any other western nation...
You're being lied to. And they have you hook, line, and sinker.
Is Microsoft afraid of Apple?
Not sure. I'm beginning to wonder how much Microsoft is like the United States these days. Think about it. A monopoly with unfair advantages set long ago. Desperate to crush anything that could threaten that in the smallest way. Ruthless, with little to no regard as to what the rest of the world..err market thinks.
A country err competitor steps in with something new and innovative, something different? Well, if we have no use for it and can't copy it, crush it!
Maybe I've just woken up on the wrong side of the bed?
Where can I find how to do a software mod with a memory card? I've always been under the impression one needed a mod chip... Any links to guides, etc?

Proof, please? Something a bit more accurate, than say, WMD proof...
He did say Upgrade Option - likely refering to people already using XP. Get a life, reactionary troll
