I remember some guy theorizing that oil is actually created by the earth and bubbles up into oil deposits from time to time. he he.

Anyone have any good articles on the theories?

NO! That is not the point of oss. Its about some kind of hippy freedom philosophy. SOME of the OS software is better(in terms of quality/features etc). Many are NOT.

Give up on your silly argument. Many times it is better to build your own software. Many times it is better to buy the software. Its a business decision with as many factors as there are different businesses (core competencies, time to market, capitol, etc. etc.)

Hint Hint. Bringing in OS software isn't necessarily an argument for build you own, especially if you don't have any programmers on staff. At that point its the equivalent of buying software, albeit at a much lower initial cost.

If I can't play my current xbox games on 360, then I might consider buying the ps3 over the 360. I'd definately wait longer to buy the 360 just to see what the ps3 will have to offer.
Most games come out on both systems anyway, so at that point, both are pretty equal (technical merits aside)

For MS, why would the want to give their customers any reason not to upgrade to their new console? Its almost(not quite) like asking why make Longhorn backward compatible with xp/2000/98 etc.

I haven't taken a thorough look at the shootout, but I do see many different tests. There would be where your algorithm's change. Perhaps you should send a fibonacci2 test to them and see if they would post it. The key being all the languages would have to implement your new, non-recursive algorithm to be fair.

Its the package name for the class File. Similar to c++ namespaces. Its a CS thing dude.

That said, the grandparent poster was a bit disingenous. The File class is roughly equivalent to the stat function/structure in C. You can't read the file without creating an inputstream/reader.

So yes. You are correct. It is more verbose when doing simple operations. But I like to think that more complex operations fall together more easily.
Many programmers like to whip something out now. A quick "one off". Instead, often, with a little more time and more ground work, they can make something that is reusable.

In terms of the IO being verbose. Well its pretty flexible. 2 Interfaces (InputStream/OutputStream) are used for many different opertations. Read/write a file. Read/write to/from a socket. Read/write from a string or byte array. Read/write serialized object s to/from a file/socket/etc.... Its not just File IO. Its ALL IO. Long story short, that is why.
