yeah, but then you have to use power to create the vacuum.

how is a specialized OS a waste of resources??? If you don't use OpenBSD, that's fine by me.

  3. whatever on The Shallow Roots of the Human Family Tree · · Score: 2, Insightful

The article says all humans alive today can trace their ancestry to one person who lived between 5000 and 2000 BC. I call bullshit on that one. Have a look at the various places on Earth humans had already migrated to during that time frame, and you'll quickly realize that this theory is flawed somewhere. I suspect that this article has other motives.

  4. THE PIT on Where Computers Go To Die · · Score: 1

I work a help-desk job part-time at the college I'm studying at. They are frequently upgrading hardware at Confederation College, so older equipment that gets replaced (along with the junk that is just plain broken) gets sent to a first-floor storage room lovingly referred to as "The Pit". We recently did inventory down there and sorted through hundreds of old monitors, printers and computers. Lots of stuff gets hauled away (at cost to us) and some gets recycled. A fair amount of gear that still works gets sold off in a "yard sale" to students and resident nerds who need to install linux or bsd on anything they can get their hands on. Fun stuff always.

  5. Re:firefox is kinda worthless lately on Don't Click on the Blue E · · Score: 1

One way to fix this for http://www.overclockers.com/ is to enable Adblock for Firefox, and then block all those silly little animated adds in their webpage. That should solve the problem for you, at least partially.

  6. shame on you slashdot on France Will Be Home To Fusion Plant · · Score: 0, Flamebait

Interesting that this garbage got modded "funny" should have been modded OFFTOPIC garbage. Way to promote hate towards a nation that was eager to help the cause of American liberty in its early stages. Here's a clue for you backwards, McDonalds-brained "Americans"; take your Statue of Liberty and ship it back from where it came; it no longer stands as an adequate symbol for your country anyway.

  7. Re:That's great, but... on The Future of Linux on Laptops · · Score: 1

"People are too used to doing everything on a machine with admin rights, how many people are going to be willing to give that up?" Uh, you remember when we all had to start wearing seatbelts? Same kind of situation. Computer users have to stop doing everything as admin/root, because it just doesn't make sense not to. Given the choice, MANY would choose an alternative to Windows if its offered.

  8. Re:He, you Anglosaxons might have a point :-) on French Response to Google is Microsoft · · Score: 3, Insightful

Well the situation isn't improving in Canada, either. All kinds of fun new laws are happening here!:)
I think that what we're seing is the gradual degradation of civilization; we are approaching a time of great change, the ultimate domination of humanity by a brainless corporate-style world governement. Business interests feed the channels of power (through money) in the world now. The gradual "dumbing down" of the mob/populace ensure the continuation of an upward feeding, parasitic capitalism.
    My vote's with the REVOLUTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Let there be Global Warming!!! on Kyoto Protocol Comes Into Force · · Score: 1

The USA NOT backing the Kyoto Accord? Whoa, big shocker there! And I always thought the republicans were big environmentalists. Environmentalist mentality doesn't work in the US because, quite frankly, anyhthing "environmentalist" usually has a bad effect on the stock-value of big industry. Besides, everyone knows that global-warming is caused by cows(Canadian ones) farting and marijuana smoke!

  11. Feed me! on What Do You Charge for Tech Support? · · Score: 1

Depends who I'm helping. For family, a nice dinner suffices. If I don't know ya then it will cost ya. Helping you with something linux related I'm more willing; annoying windows problems-that's where I get more demanding(fee-wise).

  12. Re:Kraftwerk on The Birth of Electronic Music · · Score: 1

ah Kraftwerk!!! Don't forget Pink Floyd, Giorgio moroder, Tangerine Dream... But yes, there's definitely a difference between MUSIC and random noise coming from some feedback generator. Electronic peaked, IMHO, with early 90's 'ARDCORE....JUNGLE...that was the good stuff.

What you're referring to is also called "upswing" or "up-ending". Its what you learn not to do when you want to sell on a call. People of every nationality do it, not just the Aussies. Americans are actually REALLY bad for it.
