--Thayat's some good thinkin' there, Clem.;-) Makes sense.
--HOWEVER, if people would just put more actual RAM in their boxes, lots of swap space becomes redundant. (If you have 4GB+ RAM and a 64-bit host OS, you can prolly get away with 64-512MB of Swap.)
--Remember that the disk-swapping code was originally written **because of** lack of sufficient RAM...;-)
--Defragging could still be useful, even on flash drives. If all your files are kept sequential, there's no need to skip around looking for the next filepart.
--Won't save HUGE amounts of time, or may not even be very noticeable - but every little bit (pun intended) helps...
--Put it this way - I hate offshoring, outsourcing, whatever ya wanna call it -- unless it's ME (or someone I know in-country) that's getting hired to do it.;-)
Why should backups be bogging down their performance? Auto-schedule the backup for just after "business hours", and let them go home w/o having to take WORK with them.
--Erm... It's said that Teh Apocalypse may actually involve ASTEROIDS// debris from space... Guess who gets hit 1st then?
--Regardless; I may apply for an Ops position at the Space Hyatt (or whatever) if this really happens. Instead of paying $millions, I get paid to WORK IN SPACE. How freakin' cool would that be?;-)
+1 Insightful; espec. if Stella is a Nuclear Reactor op.
--Anyhow -- Star Trek knew about the whole "magnetic bottle" thing back in the 60's. They were talking about "dilithium crystals", but the concept evidently carries over IRL.
