    You know, I liked Nemesis so much that I went and purchased the VHS version. Go back after a while and watch it again. Tom Hardy OWNED the Picard-clone role. (So much so, that he should arguably be used if they ever show a younger Picard again.)

    --Yes, AAMOF I'm using a ps/2 keyboard right now, along with a USB mouse. I shouldn't have to go buy a stupid USB adapter for my existing HW (that works just fine the way it is.)

    --There are other things that use parallel ports besides printers. For instance, I happen to still have an Original Iomega 100MB Zip drive - you telling me I have to give that up just cuz of your "precious backboard real estate?" Get real.

    o Your problem can be (fairly easily) solved, but yes - Ubuntu and other distros need to work on auto failure/recovery stuff for cases like this.

    --The last line is prolly where it barfed; use ' lspci ' to find out where your card moved to (start linux in runlevel 2 to get command prompt. This is one reason why I *never* run my systems in runlevel 5.)

    It is simply amazing that Windows 98 for instance, can deliver the same (and often better) end-user experience and functionality that Vista does, but with only 5% CPU MHz, RAM and Disk resources. And so virtualisation will allow 20 Windows 98 instances on hardware required for a single instance of Vista without degrading the user experience.

    --Try it on (1) remote install. Trust me. I'm all up on Linux and Vmware, and NX is the ONLY thing that makes Server remote console usable over Internet for me. Plus, you get a full terminal-server desktop along with the bargain. (I use Icewm or XFCE.) // Haven't had to use anything that slow in years, but I heard it also works 1/2way decent over DIALUP.

    --Yah, I'm a Firewire-400 fan myself; even setup a simple P2P network with it. Search vmware forums for details.

    --Only prob with FW800 is the physical plug incompatibility (which was a bonus for USB1.1 -> 2.0 users) and lack of widespread installs.

    --Some ppl say FW is dying, but I don't believe it. All the movie-editor ppl and such are hardc0re FW fans. (USB2 is Teh Suxor with >1 drive on the bus.)

    --On the plus side, you can get an external-drive carrier/enclosure for ~$50-60 that will do FW400, USB2, AND Sata... It roxxors with a SATA-250GB drive; just runs a tiny bit warm.

    --That's what BACKUPS are for... With Win2k / XP Pro, you can use ntbackup. Failing that, you can always install vsftpd on the host and FTP your files over.

    What MS should do, if they want a Standing Ovation from Teh Community(TM):

    o Open-source the Win2kPro OS code, and license it for VM use.

    o Convert the existing data to UTF8 -> binary.

    o Find a rock sheet (thin enough to be fairly light, but not thin enough to break easily.)

    o Permanently etch the binary into the rock sheet with a frickin' laser beam. (Wielded by a shark of course.)

    o Store the rock in a cool, dry place. Preferably out of sight, and armored against the inevitable barbarian/Zombie hordes.
