    Corollary artery: A *nix n00b is easily spotted; they have NO CLUE how to do *anything* meaningful when forced to edit a file with "vi"

    In a similar vein: A *nix newbie will never understand why "emacs" doesn't work AT ALL like Windoze Notepad (or why, while immersed in this environment, his disk seems to be constantly swapping)

    --See, that's exactly what worried me about the article. It sounded like this: if he'd had to abort the flight, there was no way for him to bail out of the aircraft... I wonder if he even HAS the equivalent of an ejection seat, or a safe (comparatively) way to get back to Earth alive, even if the aircraft becomes an uncontrolled total loss.

    --I was the same way with B5. The alien costumes were a bit too much. OTOH, I never watch DS9, TOS is my favorite, and TNG is a distant 2nd. Basically everything after DS9 (Voyager, Enterprise) is crap (except for 7of9).

    --Claudia Christian (Ivanova) is "teh hottie", though. :) The few reruns of B5 that I've seen, I mostly liked (espcially the ones with Walter Koenig.)

    --Hopefully JMS can revitalize the Trek universe in an interesting and sustainable way.

    --Well, I do have to say that with the latest Nvidia drivers and the latest Halo patch, I can finally play Halo with a somewhat decent** framerate on an AMD Duron 900 MHz / Nvidia Geforce4 MX440 / Win98se / 512MB RAM.

    ** Worst case scenario:
    800x600 with decals turned on, everything else set to "low" except for music, and all tweaks from the forums: 4-6 FPS when snow is falling outside in the "Two Betrayals" level.

    --On average I can get 12-14 FPS now, which is decent; and with some scenes it goes to 20-30 FPS, but that's usually with no enemies and just walking. It doesn't sound like a lot, but the game isn't *too* annoying anymore.

    --Oh, calm down Sparky. First this exploit requires shell access, which means the attacker has to be able to log in. Second, this code only affects ONE BOX AT A TIME. Windows exploits generally try to affect multiple machines, or actively destroy the ability to use the box barring a reinstall/reformat.

    --Yes, this is evil code, but please don't blow it out of proportion. Your "average" Windows problems are still MUCH worse than this, and far more widespread.

    --Note that it has to be a Capital S (Ctrl-A, Shift-S); and then you hit Ctrl-A, Tab to switch between regions. (I just discovered this because of what you posted; thanks for the screen tip.)

    --Actually, IIRC the Linux suspend-to-disk function, which is used mostly for laptops (swsusp; and there's an alternate implementation as well) requires at least swapspace == amount of installed RAM to work properly.

    --I recommend at least 512MB RAM for any modern Linux desktop system these days, if you intend on using KDE or Gnome, or for any "serious" work. Depending on intended regular usage however, you can prolly get away with ~64MB of swap as a lower limit (I really wouldn't recommend anything *less* than 32MB swap tho as a rule-of-thumb; modern HD's these days can read all that out in less than 2 seconds) but as always, test your specific system for what works best for you.

    --I don't know why you got modded Troll, because I happen to agree with you. Sometimes a calculated "bluff" is helpful in these situations:

    "Well sir, if you think my efforts so far are unsatisfactory, I can take what I've coded so far out of the system entirely and you can look into hiring someone else."

    --Some of the time, they'll back down - because they've already invested (time, money, reputation, $intangible) in what's been done so far. If they don't, you wouldn't want to work there anyway.
