Comet tails have nothing to do with drag and everything to do with solar winds. They always face away from the sun, no matter what direction the comet is traveling.

  2. Percentage of volume? on Life Possible On 'Large Regions' of Mars · · Score: 2

Why did they use this measure? With Mars being so much smaller, of course a higher percentage of the volume would be hospitable. Mars has 15% of the volume of Earth but 28% of the surface area. Just seems like bad comparison.

Just reading the Foundation novels for the first time(through Foundation and Foundation & Empire so far) and I was definitely thinking about psychohistory even before reading that last sentence. While psychohistory was not about simulations, the point of these simulations is to better understand how all of these variables interact with eachother and the eventual outcomes. It's this understanding that could lead to the mathematical model of psychohistory. Not saying it will, obviously, but the similarity is there.

  5. Worked for me on Why Teach Programming With BASIC? · · Score: 1

Got started with QBASIC when I was a youngin, wrote a rudimentary wireframe 3D renderer that worked at about 1 frame per second, and I've been hooked ever since. I always had problems with these early classes that I would go far beyond the assignment and get marked down for not following the instructions. Like in this Visual Basic class, we had to do this simple matching game, and I made Wheel of Fortune with Simpsons graphics and sound effects. DOH!

While definitely not perfect, they look a lot better to me than the JPEG images due to the lack of nasty JPEG compression artifacts. Seriously, zoom in and try to hold your lunch in while looking at the JPEG images. Unfortunately there is no fallback mechanism for images like there is for video.

Exactly, the video tag is just one very small part of it. I hate that so many people refer to it this way.

  12. Pocket Change on Why Firefox's Future Lies In Google's Hands · · Score: 1

That's pocket change for Google, and they get much more in return from ad revenues. In case you forgot, that's what this is all about, ad revenue from their search engine and services. Google's enemy is Microsoft, not Mozilla, and right now Mozilla is Microsoft's biggest enemy in the browser space. So as they say, the enemy of your enemy is your friend.
